Thanks for sharing this video. It brought back alot of memories. The first time I went there was in 1973; I was 9, then again in 1986. The last time was with my kids just a few weeks before it closed. We bought a few souviners and did the tour, etc. You could sure tell the fanfare had worn off by then though. It was sad seeing it go.
too bad I don't have the cash to re-open this. I'm in Northern California only about two-two and half hours away from this great location. I'm a screenwriter and filmmaker and am currently working on a couple western scripts and this would obviously be a great location. :)
I also met Pernell in 92, and we became friends, at that i worked in Malibu, Topanga ,great guy, few stories to tell, but will be too long LOL,,, but i built a miniature 1/9 scale of the house so take a look, and i will tell you stories later......but if you copy and past this you can see ...entertainment.webshots.com/photo/2697054810051809962LGwXVm
@KesslersCross How great that the show is still gaining new fans! I grew up on it and still love it. Late in the series, Ben Cartwright adopted a fourth son, Jamie. He wasn't particularly popular with the fans and was only on the show for (I think) the last two seasons, so most tributes to the show don't include him.
@lilharlenko Thanks for the answer. I am still learning all of the story line. I never caught it before but most of the ones that I seen only had the three, but I knew I seen a few episodes where there was a dif one. I learned that blocker died around the 4th season and they never explained whyhoss wasnt there? I found out that later they explained his death ad drowning but did anyone ever come up with how they all died?
@KesslersCross Dan Blocker died between seasons 13 and 14. The actual show didn't explain what happened, but in a movie made later it was said that he drowned while saving someone. The boy Ben adopted was about 13 yrs old. You may also have seen an episode with Will Cartwright, who was Ben's nephew. He only appeared in a few episodes. The deaths of the rest of the family may have been explained in a movie about the later generation of Cartwrights, but I didn't watch any of the movies.
@lilharlenko WOW, season 13 and 14?? Sheesh, I had no idea it was on that long. I gotta get all of the episodes on DVD. Me and my 3yr old nephew call them our "stories" lol. He knows exactly when they are on. I caught a little of one of the movies but I had no clue what was going on at all. How long was Bonanza on? All of the actors are dead now right?
@KesslersCross It ran 14 seasons and ended in '72 or '73. It is the second longest running Western in tv history. (Gunsmoke is first) And, yes, sadly all the main actors are gone now. Pernell Roberts was the last to go; he died early this year of pancreatic cancer, which is the same disease that took Michael Landon's life.
it's interesting how the sign out front carefully words the message, cause none of the original show was shot there, to my knowledge.. Stgill a fun place to visit.
@Ghstwn Mate thats simply not true about Bonanza. The series is as popular as ever and is seen and enjoyed worldwide, just go to my website here in NZ if you doubt that, not spamming just saying. anywho all the best to ya!
@cathytreks I realize it has gained new fans. I'm simply relating to the average Stateside individual 35 and younger. If they were born the year it went off the air, then they are 39 today. Many generations have no clue or interests in the format of the show. They are more interested in reality based programs. I live in California and have been to the Pondarosa Ranch and Lake Tahoe many times. It closed it's gates in 2004 because so few related to the show anymore and visiters dropped off.
Thank you for posting this. I went several times and this was a great place. Too bad that it closed. There were a bunch of animals in a a corral when I went.
Ive been there in 2002, cant believe they shut it down, it was really cool experience. The breakfast, the novelties were great, the side shows were great, just like an old cowboy town. Ashame they closed it down
In the late 80's my husband & drove cross country while moving to California. We came upon The Ponderosa by accident having no clue the park existed. For us it was like wondering through a part of our childhood. That day was cold, so we got hot chocolate in our souvenir tin cups from the saloon. Thanks for the memories of the ranch. I am saddened to know the park closed, but grateful we stumbled across it.
Great Music, Fantastic Music, Superb Editing... I always loved Bonanza and I gotta go see this place one day. Thanks for sharing your vacation with us. Yall look like some nice, friendly people. P.S. Remember if Little Joe met a girl and took up an interest in her, you knew it was gonna be curtains for her ha ha ha
Wonderful! I love this show. Wish it were still on every week. We lived out in Nevada in the early 60's and I didn't know about this ranch then. I wonder if it was built later on and where it was located. We lived about 8 miles from Reno. I like the way you put these Bonanza clips together. Thank you.
Sensational! I went thru the park in ''96--amazed to find no upstairs in the Cartwright home! LIttle Joe's jacket still on the hook . Park closed in '04; billionaire bought it and closed it...Met Pernell Roberts my senior year of hs. He was at Cal State, Hayward, sitting in his T-Bird, preparing for a Shakespeare reading--1964...Very nice....(gave the euology at Hop Sing's (Victor Yeng?) funeral in 1980...Was there ever a greater opening scene than Bonanza?
@BonanzaDude553 I was there in 1993. It felt like walking on sacred ground when you first walk into the ranch house. It's a shame they closed down, would have liked to gone back.
Thanks for this lovely video. Wish I had lived closer to the park when it was open.
In honor of the last Cartwright, Rest in Peace Pernell Roberts. You and "the family" made me smile and laugh many, many times. May you all be riding the range in Heaven tonight.
Thank you for posting this souvenir of a fun day at the Ranch.

Too bad, but the fact is the past few generations have no connection to this old show. Time marches on. Same thing happened to the Roy Rogers museum.
