Great tool, I keep it in it's own little bag I purchased , with a service wrench with the appropriate allen head and extension with the appropriate socket. In seconds I have puller tight to hub, snap extension in cordless drill and have motor removed in virtually seconds. Works great on BLOWER MOTORS to!!!THANKS DR.Z for the great videos... FRITZHVAC
These are so very handy and nice. I work for a huge retirement place that has split systems, heat pumps, geothermal, and fan coil systems. Just remember to clean up the old shaft and use a bit of lubrication before useing it like it shows here. Ive never had a bit of problem with my puller !!
That hub puller is a piece of junk. You should use a steel hub puller. I personally have ruined that patricular hub puller, being aluminum. I have also talked with many other tech's and they said the same.
@circusshoe That is what I was thinking. Heat treated steel is the best. I don't think Snap On makes anything very close to that, but they do make something which will work.
Just picked one up the other day, coincidently I had a bad cond. fan motor after watching this vid..jk. Went ahead and paid $100.00 CDN for this little beauty, affixed the device to the shaft and I was able to spin the nut on the end of the puller by hand and the fan blade came right off...un freakin believeable...great tool, quite pricey for what it actually is though
I don't work on alot of older systems. When I do, I drill down into the old motor shaft with a 1/4" bit (past the hub itself), put my drift into the hole and WAIL on it with a 24 oz hammer. That hub puller is definitely on my shopping list now. Only $80, huh? It's a steal at twice the price!
that method will work providing that the condenser fan motor is already dead. Beating the shaft on a brand new motor hell no lol. Bad for the bearings
I have seen this tool in parts stores. concidering the price of this tool I wasnt to convinced if it would be worth buying. But it looks like a must have tool for the HVAC tech to have. thanks for the demo.
How much does this puller cost? Kroil is the best anti seize lubricant that i have used for years- ran accross it when i was a maintenance mechanic at Werner
Nice job Jim! Back in the old days, when I was a diesel tech, I aquired a nice habit. Before I would pull a hub of a shaft, or knock a bearing out of hub, I would always measure the distance - how far out is the shaft or how deep is the bearing. After I had the new parts installed, I would measure again. If the measurement came up different, I wanted to know why.
Is that Kroil stuff better and cost less than WD-40?
As far as puller goes, I just use some cheap puller from Harbor Freight. I'm just starting out and can't afford the same fancy tools that you got Dr. Z. ha ha ha....
Oh gang, don't forget to make SURE that the locking screws on the puller don't get into the hole on the hub where the lock nut goes, lol :> That'll ruin your day! hehe
Kroil oil is awsome and it doesn't smell bad either. There is another lubricant on the market even better than Kroil its called Hilcolube....this stuff smells so good you could use it for colone lol
I've used this tool many times. And, ruined a few... The major flaw is that the threads are too fine. That being, to make it easier to turn, yes. But also reflects on the life expectancy of the tool itself. A stubborn hub is more than likely stuck on a burr created by the set screw. If possible and to preserve the puller, smack the blade DOWN the shaft first to inspect and/or remove the burr. Then pry up with an open crescent to apply the puller with the minimal amount of travel possible.
Excellent! Thank you Jim for that Pressure control video, and response to my Message =D good stuff! Everyone in my AC-R class knows you from Youtube they call you A/C Guru hahahahaha. Keep up the great informatide video tutorials; You ROCK!
there is no greater frustration on earth than trying to get a hub off without one of those things....truely mans greatest invention, next to football ofcourse..LOL
That tool was the best $38 bucks I've ever spent!!!!
