Much like hate crime legislation, I don't see how gun control legislation does much more than appease the consciences of those who propose such laws. If someone has a distorted enough view of right or wrong that they are willing to commit a heinous crime, is it going to matter much whether the weapon they're using is illegal or not?

The only purpose served by a handgun is for killing. If today we ban the sale of all handguns, then there eventually there will be fewer handguns in circulation, as criminals caught with guns, whether bought or stolen, will lose them, and the number of available guns will decrease. I'm not sure how he felt about gun ownership once he himself was shot, but if he kept his views then I guess you can say that at least he had the courage of his convictions. People get worked up on this topic because really, 99% of us don't want anyone to get hurt, and we have different (and very strong) ideas on how best to achieve that. For my money, I think guns are unnecessary, but I live in a pretty safe place so *shrug*

@THEEND123321 So yeah, the gun certainly helped. If Chapman had a only a knife, there was a pretty good chance that bystanders could've wrestled the knife out of his hands. Unfortunately, Chapman had a gun, and he unloaded 5 shots into Lennon's back before anyone had a chance to react.

The only purpose served by a handgun is for killing. If today we ban the sale of all handguns, then there eventually there will be fewer handguns in circulation, as criminals caught with guns, whether bought or stolen, will lose them, and the number of available guns will decrease. Anything we can do, whether on a large scale or small, is the right thing to do if want to truly eliminate handgun violence. Violent - prone individuals without access to guns will have to re-evaluate.
