I never knew about sm until just seeing a youtube video about it a couple minutes ago, and this describes the way I am, when people try to talk to me, I feel like I can't speak no matter how hard I try, and people think I'm being rude. :l
I don't know, I can't help but cry while watching this...
I'm glad these kids got the help they needed so early in life.
I'm 17 now and have had SM for years, but my parents don't care.
I keep telling them about SM but they don't budge, it's like they are in no rush to help me. That's very hypocritical, since they get angry at me when I don't talk.
They look at my issues as attitude problems.
The only reason why I act out is because I get so frustrated at times from the lack of attention.
Im 20 i hav this. All my life from Prek-12th Evrytime I tried 2 talk it was like my body was stopping me. My parents always yelled at me 4 not talkin. They say u can talk fine at home but no where else. And call me names give me mean looks. Honestly there lucky I still talk 2 evn tho they still yell at me. Now i can show them this nd they can see that they wer wrong 4 punishin me 4 not talkin.

Im 11 turning 12 this year and i am in grade 6. I could'nt talk it started in Kindergarten. but in grade 4 i started to whisper last day of grade i started to softley talk. In grade 5 i started to talk more but still softly. Now i am in 6 Grade and i talk way more then grade 5 in an average voice. Kids in my grade just think im this freak that cant talk.... But they dont kno how badly i want to talk but to afraid.....Selective Mutisim has litterally ruined my life....
@TheSmartpants12 Wow, I hope you get better. SM is no fun. I have so much trouble making friends and my family also thinks I'm weird. I'm a 17 yr old girl and you have improved way faster than me, congratulations (:
I'm 34 and just found out about this. I was outgoing at home and on the block but at school it was excruciating to talk. My whole body would burn and my heart would pound. I think it's because I had such nasty teachers; always calling me stupid in front of the class and even hitting me. Even today I only like talking to one person at a time.
I think that I suffer from selective mutism. It's really difficult to live with. It started when I was in 5th grade and ended until 9th. It would only occur at school and with distant family members. It's still there, although not like how it used to be. I still can't talk to my dad and step-mom, and I'm 17. I don't think my immediate family would take me seriously if I told them about this, and that's very hard to deal with.
I have a boy with similar situation and I can really understand this. He didn't speak to any of his friends or teacher in his pre-school. However with steps we took, he was able to overcome the problem.
Parents out there who is facing the same problem, don't give up. With encouragement and reward, your child will be able to overcome it.
When I was about 8 I overheard my mom talking about a friend of hers who had a daughter my age who had stopped talking. i remember being fascinated and never forgot about it. she ended up talking after 3 years but my mom didn't know any details. i bet this is what she had. also my foster mom was a therapist and she had a patient- a 5 yr old girl- who would only talk to her mother. eventually she started talking again too but i don't think she knew about selective mutism.
When I was young, I couldn't speak a word to members of my extended family. Nor could I speak up in social settings despite words and urges racing through my head. Today, even as a college graduate, I can speak to my friends, I can speak to my immediate family, but can't seem to say much to others. I have a hard time making eye contact. My throat closes up. My chest gets tight. I now know about Selective Mutism and wonder if I might suffer from it. Thanks for this video.
i had this when i was younger, and i have been almost completely cured. proffessionals may say it is curable, but i still have many of the anxiety symptoms such as being afraid of speaking in public (i suck up and do it) and making eye contact...i completely freak out when i make eye contact with ppl. but they are making some amazing breakthroughs. when i went to therapy i didnt have the sound thing. i just got candy when i made a sound in public

I have this. I had no idea, I just can't talk outside of my bubble (close close friends).
And they'll always look at me, tell me i show no emotion, " Hey Ivan, why are you so stonefaced? " I shrug my shoulders.

"My bones feel like glass, my skin feels like paper, and my lips are glued shut."
As an SM myself, I find this hauntingly poetic.
