The STI is a 2.5L... but it's turbo'd. very good cars IN their classes. i have both. hands down the M3 wins in looks, inside and out, and performance. The STI win in performance and exterior looks (for me). You turbo an M3 and the HP shoots up tremendously without really trying. But... it's whatever the person is looking for. I wanted an M3 so I sold my STI. That said... I'll get an STI again, some day... I love the AWD.

As an STi owner, I still would love to own an M3. Both cars are in complete different classes. STi is obviously a more aggresive type car with power at the wheels and the M3 is more of a sexy higher class performance car that digs chicks regardless if it looses to an STI or not!! Being an e46 m3 driver myself, I gotta say I love both cars. But whoever says the price on an e46 m3 is like $50-60k nope sorry. Of course with the year we're in you can't buy a new one, yeah you might buy a low miles one maybe roughly around 40k+ but you can get them easily around 30-35k.

I had a '00 C5 Corvette, then I traded the C5 in for a '03 M3 and In 2005 I traded the M3 for a '05 STI. I must say that I enjoy driving the STI much better than the other two. I just paid off my STI a couple of months ago and still enjoy driving it. It has much quicker throtle response than the M3 and I can drive it in any season. The M3 didn't seem as powerful taking off the line. The STI however will lauch like a rocket and kick you back into your seat, similar to the C5 but with 4 passengers

Convertible M3's are noticeably slower than a Coupe. You can make any car fast tho really. Doesn't matter if a 9 second Honda Civic blows the door off an M3 or a Mercedes E55 AMG. They are still MUCH MUCH nicer and better cars than the faster Civic or STi.

@spirit407 sti have massive oversteer, i dont think when they were designing the sti, they really payed to much attention to suspension since this car was intended to be used on dirt or other rally type surfaces. M3 on the other hand was designed especially for the track as it successfully completed the Nurburgring track without any problems. i am the owner of the e46 m3. this is one of our runs on the way to the drag strip. the other run is where i only lost by half a car. i only have headers. my friend has intake, dyno tune, turbo back, headers, crank pulley. he put down around 340wtq and i forgot the hp but it was way more then my car. plus i am a convertible so that makes my car heavier. good run overall.
