well, pardner, i say 'yeee haaaa,' a double bill on youtube of two of the greatest country music singers that ever sang in Nashville. Since preferring one version over another would simply be a matter of personal preference based on individual taste, it seems pointless to ask which one is preferred, since it only gives information about the personal preferences of the listeners, but yields little of any interest about the song or performers. Still, we thank yall for puttin this 2-fer-1 together.
I have George's records and on one of them it says "George Jones is one singer who can sing any song and make it famous again even if it was recorded by someone else." I am a huge George Jones fan, everything he sings comes from his heart and that's why he is so successful. I do apologize to all of the Tammy Wynette fans but George Jones is a household name for all country fans.
I agree Johnny Paycheck was the writer and first performer of this song.. So too say its a woman s song is off the wall Yes Tammy does a great job but there are better versions out their look around you will find them.
sorry to say george is the best at this song all his songs are brilliant he has got the best voice i love listerning to him and my 1 year old will only sing this song if george is singing it lol but tammy can sing aswell xxxx
Noone loves "The Possum" more than this forty-seven year old kid, but Tammy wins this race by at least a half a length...on tracks and vocals. Nomatter how great the artist, magic on a certain song is a rarity...and magic was knee-deep in the studio when Tammy cut her version. Wasn't this the song that got the ball rolling for Tammy? If so, that's just more proof that magic definately occured on that particular session. Thanks for the quality post...enjoyed it! ~oO(♪)Oo~
can somebody please ,i'm tryingto find the hits of George and tammy called the commitment or something like that ,its their last wedding so please can anyone please help me find it isfor my mom she lovedit but she don't remember what the song called help me please
I love Tammy's version, but if I had to choose who made it more personal and sad then that would have to go to the Possum himself George Jones. Both are my two favorite performers of all time. God Bless
very good for both i do like george but tammy is the first one i heard sing this song so i would say tammy i am 37 and love good old country that will never be the same without the pioners
Anything Tammy sings is a winner with me. I do so love this song by both her and Johnny Paycheck. I feel that the song works for either a male or female. George is wonderful as always but he doesn't have my vote on this one song. Thanks for posting. - Paula
I love this stuff. Tammy Wynette takes me back to short pants and country living, and a more simple time, and stronger America. Oh the good old days. God bless everyone and God bless America.
George is my favorite male singer, but I don't feel him on this song. He just doesn't seem like he's into it, and the male chorus is so abrupt it's startling. Tammy sounds real on this song - like she is living through it while she's singing it - and her harmony is a great match for the steel.
Sorry George, but you lose this song. This song has to have good pedal steel. The other version is awesome with the singing & the band. George, what were you thinking?
They both do this song justice. But The Possum takes the song, because once George sings a song he owns it. It's in his glovebox. Their Daughter Georgette sings this song now. Barb
This was Tammy's best single she ever sang...I jlust fellin love with her voice the day I heard this song

The tear in Tammy's voice makes it a perfect fit. I'm a huge George fan - have more CDs than I can count - but Tammy gets my vote on this one.

They were truly the King and Queen of Country, as advertised circa 1970. They didn't last, but the songs will. Excellent.

Tammy.. no contest.
There's no way George could top her on this, especially since the lyric is not credible from a man. It's a girl singer's song.
vmcla 2 years ago
I'm not sure I'd call it "a girl singer's song". It was written by Johnny Paycheck, who also recorded it.
tpage6 2 years ago 3
Thanks for the info.. I'll take a listen to Paycheck's recording. But I remain skeptical that a man can bring the lyric to life the way Tammy did.

You may not know this but it was written and recorded first by Johnnie Paycheck. A man.

Tammy. This song can bring tears, the way she sings it. I feel her pain. George, great as he is, just sings it well, not more.

My vote is for Tammy and the vote is coming from someone who feels that George Jones is this country's greatest male vocalist. It is her song.
