I first watched this episode over 40 years ago, and still get chills after Snake Oiler drives off. Speed smells the oil of the Mach V and finds his way into the cockpit. He starts the car but questions how he will drive blind. That's when Racer X starts his car: "I recognize the sound of that car. It can only mean that Racer X has come back into the race. Will so have I!" Completely far fetched, but in real life there is something about the unwavering determination to succeed despite all odds.

Speed's racing while blind makes sense from a wuxia perspective--- he is using the same sort of martial arts echolocation supersense for his driving that blinded martial artists in the movies use for blindfighting and even for catching arrows in midflight by the sound of the arrow's travel through the air

Speed Racer has always approached racing like a martial artist, and the blinded martial artist using super-hearing has long been an Asian trope in legend and film
