this movie is a classic. i was a horse crazy kid, and the blackstallion was my favorite of all! now this was back whe movies were done cleanly with great storylines and there was no trash and actors were real actors.
The young rider who did some of the stunt riding was from Foxfield Farms in Moorpark CA. Saw him ride in Santa Barbara. Connemara mare, he stood on her bare back and they jumped a course of 2'6 fences. beautiful to watch!!!
In black beauty the horse is a quarter horse by the name of Doc's keepin time it says at the credits. I don't know of any doubles. And in the horse whisperer i believe there is only one horse,Pilgrim, which btw is the same as the one that plays Ginger in black beauty.
Cass Ole, a champion Arabian stallion, was featured in most of the movie's scenes, with Fae Jur, another black Arabian stallion, being his main double. Fae Jur's main scene is the one where Alec is trying to gain the trust of the Black on the beach. Two other stunt doubles were used for running, fighting and swimming scenes. (Wiki)

horses just get scared, i've seen horses get spooked, that's prob how they do it, they spook the horse to make it do such things, a horse has a life too ya know!
If I would have used a whip with my thoroughbred, she would "misbehave" like in the movie, unless she could escape by running away. She was very scared of the whip and would mess everything up like that. I never used it. Perhaps it is used in the movie, together with other tricks, just to get the "effects" they wanted.

When u got a thoroughbred it can panic for almost nothing, very difficult to calm down such horses, in such circumstances as a journey by ship or even in a trailer. Once in panic, lifethreathening accidents could happen, unfortunately. I've seen such myself, a horse refusing to get on a trailer, but forced to. Very sad.

I like this video; I saw the movie years ago; and I used to ride a thoroughbred. Still feeling great when I get to see a horse! And what a nice horse shown here!
