Lovely! Thank God for the Beau Hunks! I'm sitting here with tears in my eyes, the music is so beautiful! And I was raised on Rock'n'Roll, go figure! This is the soundtrack to my childhood!
This brings back memories from when I was little, my dad is president of the Twin Cities Laurel & Hardy club and growing up I heard this music constantly
it's amazing that after all these many years---wars, depressions, good times, bad times---there would still be enough interest in these charming ditties, written merely for background music, to keep musicians playing them and fans enjoying them. Certainly a tribute to the quality of the compositions and the nostalgia we have for what seems to have been a more innocent era.
@TheJediCharles you are quite correct, it was a better era only for certain people in society, basically for some urban white males, to be blunt. Dad said there was a public perception (unsupported by reality) in like '27, '28, '29 that a golden era was at hand but that when the crash hit, it was unbelievably devasting,and went on and on and on. And yes, musicians were extremely talented, typically playing several instruments.
Wonderful, iust wonderful. I have 4 of the Beau Hunks CDs. Such talent. I listen everyday. The Beau Hunks are brilliant at performing the genius of LeRoy Shields. Marvelous and stll listenable!!!!
Sorry, but I still prefer Ronnie H's recordings of the Hal Roach music. I know some people griped that it was "too polished" and he had to improvise on certain pieces so they may not have been exact re-creations. But I think Ronnie did it first, and I still think the best. Unfortunate that his lp's and CD's are unknown to many who like this music.
I usually consider a large room's acoustic ambiance to enhance an orchestral piece, but in the case of Shield's Hal Roach catalog, I prefer to here the music as dry as possible because that's how I remember the films. Also In this particular performance, I feel there is some staccato interps that are better rendered in a more legatto approach. In this respect I prefer the Ron Hazlehurst arrangement on this one. However The Beau Hunks, in general, have a more authentic sound in the studio IMHO.
What a marvelous orchestra! Their renditions of these classic LeRoy Shield pieces are spot-on! This particular piece has a nice jazzy bounce to it. A joy to listen to, and the Beau Hunks are impeccably faithful to the original style. Bravo!
Will the Beau HUnks ever be in California, I use to hear all this when I was a kid. I was a musician, remember trying to find out where to find the music. Many years ago. I can not believe what it took to copy these arrangements, my God all that transcribing. Shields wrote such beautiful music, thanks for posting.
So true!! The transcribing and the playing are awesome. Can you imagine what it would take to write and play these compositions? True genius all around. And kudos to the people of this generation who can marvel and appreciate it. Wonderfiul!!!

I miss the banjo in the rhythm section. Where is it? Can't hear it. Too much reverb. Strings too lush! Miss the original touh of the 30's recordings!

@1276epr
I wouldn't describe it as a "more innocent" era, as per some examples you yourself cite.
I would however say it was a more talented era. True artistry is near death these days.
