2:41 is my favorite part. The reunion! It makes me so happy every time. I'm always so glad it's not Henry haha. And then the whole carriage scene is just epic.
in jane austen movies two people holding hands is like they were kissing or having sex... you know i would love to see someone to put so much feelings to hold somebodys hand nowaday... wouldnt it be nice? :)
I was starting to quite like Henry... I thought that he did change. But then Edmund shows up, and I just fall in love with him again. The whole scene in the carriage made me cry a lot, I thought it was just beautiful... <3
@fleurgi I'm wondering if you've read the book at all. If you have, then I'm surprised you could be anything but happy she's treating Mr. Crawford this way in her confusion. He's a piece of scum. Granted they make him look nicer in the movie than he is in the book.
Henry is charming and sweet and handsome but he is inconstant and immoral. Fanny is much too sensible and simple to hold his interest forever. She knows this and herself while Henry Crawford does not.
This accepting a proposal and calling it off the next day - isn't that what Jane Austen did herself? I think the fellow's name was Harris Bigg-Wither. I sort of like what they did here, mixing Miss Austen's life into the story and thus providing Henry with a reason to act the way he will. I think it also makes him look nicer - in the book he's just inconstant.
Henry is great now, and as adorable as he is, eventually he might have cheated on her, gotten bored of her saintly and low key character, at least I think so. Edmund loves Fanny it's just hard for him to stop seeing her as a sister and see her as a woman, after all they grew up together. If Henry had loved her he would have remained persistent in keeping good moral character, if he had really changed, not fallen in to bed with a married woman he didn't care for just because he felt disappointed.
@rosemsmunoz jane austen once wrote that if henry was more patient then fanny would've probably chosen him. then in marriage she would've changed him. too bad he didn't have the patience. when people are hurt they do really stupid things they later regret. i like this crawford much better than the novel.
ok so he flirted with a few girls. I still like him better than Edmund. Edmund likes flashy women. Even a rich spoiled boy saw and fell in love with Fanny almost immediately. Edmund has known her for years. Grr. . . I like Henry.
i was never able to know if Henry really loved Fanny or if he loved the idea of Fanny. I hate not knowing and everyone has their own interpretation. I want to think he loved her but I don't know.
oh, come on people... fanny in the book was an utterly boring person, it´s a good thing they let her have some sparkle in the movie! she´s not a bitch, she´s just torn between her feelings and the social pressures (see what her mom told her about marriage, now that was hard to ignore) like we all would be in such an era, so let´s not judge :) she makes the right choice in the end, doesn t she?
@TarAncalyme She may have been boring to you but that was the character as written. It defines who she was and that is important to the story. Making dramatic changes to a major character in this way alters the whole of the story. It is not that Fanny actually makes the right choice but more the fact that Henry and Mariahs behavior had results that benefited her in the end. Had it not been for the impropriaty of Henry and Mariah her and edmound would have never gotten together.
@TarAncalyme Fanny would have most certainly condemed herself to a life of poverty and ruined any chance her family coming up in life had it not been for Toms unfortunate circumstance coupled with Henry and Mariahs indescretion. She was fortunate that things worked to her benefit. It did not work out so well for most young women in her situation at that time.
Men always say they will wait until you're ready but they don't. They get bored and angry and move on. Yet really -- having a choice between near certain poverty, going against one's family and the surety of great wealth with the benefit of helping your family, there were and are few woman would have not jumped at Mr. Crawford's proposal.
that didnt"t happen!!! Ugh!! I'm so let down right now! She didn't say yes and then retract!! She said "keep trying" (more or less) and he said he would and then screwed her over as she was beginning to come around. And Susan went with Fanny to Mansfield.
Hm. Ultimatelt, Fanny is a fickle character, she speaks too quickly. But Mr Crawford was turbulent to her... her apology could have been a little more sincere, though. She could have atleast asked him to sit down...
There are so many GREAT moments in this movie. In fact, this whole movie is just a compilation of great moments. Which is why it's one of my favorites.
OK, Fanny doesn't go back until after Maria elopes with Crawford (her father reads the account of the "matrimonial fracas", Susan goes with her, and Fanny NEVER, NEVER, NEVER changes her mind about Crawford.
Rozema simply sucks at this movie. She's tried to make Austen relevant, to improve on a great English novelist. Using conspicuous, gratuitous, sexuality does not improve on Austen, nor does inventing a storyline on slavery Austen did not intend. Ick.
@RevWarRev "a storyline on slavery Austen did not intend". What do you mean? The facts are there: The Bertrams had an estate in the West Indies and everybody knew how those estates were run.
i dont know if this is true to the book..as i have not read it..however...i just love it..the whole production is wonderful to me...thanks for posting
This scene makes an illusion that Fanny isn't a likable character but if one is to analyze her reasoning: She has pressure of marrying with choice being specifically Mr. Crawford. He has amiable qualities. With pressure, she accepts. After fully evaluating the situation: the obvious elephant in the room is: Crawford with his charms and handsome figure, is not an obvious suitor for a person such as Fanny..she is of high maintenance, I believe.
@freshglance Believe it or not- yep! Well, not very common but it did happen and was viewed as perfectly respectable. In fact reference is made to marriage between cousins in most of Austens' works which indicates that it wasn't unusual.
Edmund is such a perplexing character, I can see why Fanny was so torn in her decision making...at times he seems the perfect charming gentleman, but at other times you can see bits of his true nature shine through.
I thought that last bit was a dream...and then I found out in this clip that it wasn't...That was probably the worst scene not in a book, but adapted into the movie...the worst. And JLM is perfect and they ruined a scene with him in it...Badly done, badly done indeed!
Ok, this just makes Fanny look like a coquettish, selfish cow. She NEVER accepted Henry then relinquished her acceptance. I honestly cannot believe they completely ruined her character. Now she's just a total bitch.
@urbanr0cker More than that-she wouldn't have been allowed to relinquish her acceptance of Crawford- it would have been socially unacceptable for someone in her position. As I'm sure you know, her uncle was really cross with her fro refusing him in the book and that was because it also socially unacceptable for someone like Fanny, dependent on her relatives, to refuse any suitor,
I really dislike this movie adaptation. Fanny was never coy or indecisive like she is here. She never ever accepted Crawford's proposal or led him on in any way.
Everyone is saying that this isn't quite like the book but one of the captions at the beginning said that this film is based on the book 'Mansfield Park' AND Jane Austen's personal journals and letters.
i love how in those days you had to be very modest and conservative about dealing with the opposite sex... but their dresses reveal almost everything up top.
in the book she never accepts him. she knows that he is too inconstant, that she only intrigues him because she did not instantly fall for him. he started courting fanny after he made a bet with mary he could make her fall in love with him. later, austen makes you think he really comes to care for fanny, but his character is too vain and corrupted. she may have married him if edward had married mary, but she knows she would have been miserable and he would have lost interest in her.
I always thought that henry truly does love her, and then the one time he was serious in about fanny he got played around (because what fanny does is actually really cruel he returns to his old ways. That way he doesn't get hurt.
LOL - Fanny's face when Edmund's head falls to her breast. The first thing I thought was, "OMG, All the dirty thoughts she must be trying to get out of her head staring at that ceiling." XD
i wonder... if fanny hadn't rejected him, if they had married, is it possible he might have changed? maybe he got into that whole mess with maria afterwards cos fanny utterly crushed him with her sudden yes and then her sudden no?
da**** it fanny. is henry bad or something dang it i'll juust have to watch the other parts...it was kind of mean though saying yes, he was sooo ecstatic then turning around and telling him no
woww...thats messed up! saying yes and than saying no. I bet he felt stupid. BUT after reading some of your comments, I'm guessing Henry is a bad person...? So I guess he deserved that...
In the book, she took Susan to Mansfield Park with her. It consoled Mrs. Bertram to the loss of Fanny when she married Edmund. The omission is annoying her. Then again, they cut poor William out of this version entirely so perhaps I shouldn't wonder at it.
When he put his hand in hers it was out of kinship-love.When he fell asleep on her breast she was hurting so bad, hers was the great love of a woman to a man. Though a man can feel the same in that situation.
Having Fanny accept, then reject, Crawford's offer of marriage completely changes his character. In the book when he "dallied" with Mariah after her marriage, we completely understood that it was part of his character. With this happening, I now feel some doubt as to whether he WOULD have been faithful to Fanny, and whether his dalliance with Mariah was a direct result of Fanny's treatment of him.
But as i remembered from the book, Austen never wrote of Fanny accepting and rejecting Henry's offer. She just never accepted him even if her feelings softened a little bit...for a while.
I actually feel so sorry for Henry. He seems so hurt by her refusal but he is being unreasonable by storming away. He has to understand that his former flirtations can judge his future performance as a husband. I don't blame Fanny for her refusal but I can't help sympathizing with him.
I find a lot of the characters here are very familiar. Franny's sister is Beth from Moonlight and Mary Crawford is Ms. Honey from Matilda. But Henry also seems very familiar but I don't know.
I'm sorry. Is Fanny a nurse? Why would Edmund come to bring her back to Mansfield. As I recall, Thomas never really interacted with Fanny, so I don't get the direct connection.
you can't help but feel for both of them ... Henry because of the whole way the propsal went , he ust have love her to have taken it so badly ... and fanny due to her utter confusion she as eelings for Henry however she also has feelings stll fo Edmund and her new living situation ...everything is chaning for her and it must be a scary time ... she might ot be ready for marriage as she said
sorry my key board is sticking .... the words are ust = must ... eelings = feelings ... stll = still ... fo = for ... chaning = changing .... ot = not ... you prob would have orked it out but just in case

ahenmaxtae 1 year ago 3
wait so she actually accepted him and then rejected him? or was it just a dream?

da**** it fanny. is henry bad or something dang it i'll juust have to watch the other parts...it was kind of mean though saying yes, he was sooo ecstatic then turning around and telling him no
sarahjo941 1 year ago
woww...thats messed up! saying yes and than saying no. I bet he felt stupid. BUT after reading some of your comments, I'm guessing Henry is a bad person...? So I guess he deserved that...

@njslatinbxtch if u just watch the 2007 version it will show more of his real characteristics and you will see y he is untrustworthy.

I love this movie, but it is still gross. They are first cousins!!!!

In the book, she took Susan to Mansfield Park with her. It consoled Mrs. Bertram to the loss of Fanny when she married Edmund. The omission is annoying her. Then again, they cut poor William out of this version entirely so perhaps I shouldn't wonder at it.

she hurt him...he probably had trust issues as well and her lack of trust in him was probably a big blow. Poor Crawford

@Strangefruity Crawford was a Pig. A CUTE ONE. But a pig nonetheless.

Crawford is a babe. Just saying. I think he's adorable.

The main point is not (as for me) when he holds her hand, but it´s the emotion in his face when he says his tender "hushshh!" ....uaaah!

But Henry also seems very familiar but I don't know.

actually i loved the 2007 persuason. It has soo much sexual tension in it. It's a must see.
nayru01 2 years ago 3
I'm sorry. Is Fanny a nurse? Why would Edmund come to bring her back to Mansfield. As I recall, Thomas never really interacted with Fanny, so I don't get the direct connection.
chiteach2 2 years ago
it's not that she's a nurse, it's that she has the most caring and gentle temper of anyone @ Mansfield (well in the book anyway).
TruPhan1 2 years ago
@chiteach2 I'm guessing it was because Fanny is practically family to them, so they wanted her to be there in case Thomas died.
327ecb 2 years ago
I thought it was because Lady Bertram relied on Fanny for support ... but I haven't read the book yet so I could be wrong.
