I'm surprised at all the criticism these concept videos get. certainly not all the ideas will come to fruition at one, but give them credit for having such forward thinking. You can't honestly believe current equipment is at it's peak of design. Electrical and electronic systems are absolutely the way of the future over diesel/hydraulic systems. Stability and traction control systems are well established. We'll be seeing many of these concepts become reality in the near future.
half of those cute little creature comforts would break within a year.. The company isnt going to fix it, since it has nothing to do with production.. The bucket sliding to the rear is going to get dirt/sand/water/mud in between the joints, so will jam at some point or freeze up in winter.. lots of other real-world problems with this 'engineers toy'.. Hell, the proxy alarm would be going off all the time since, on a jobsite, people are everywhere.. FFS..
Damn cool! Say i know a guy who has a Centaur, and its harvest season. I'd just need a grain trailer for it and it then could haul grain! This is ingenious, i love it.
It would be a tremendous achievement if they manage to offer this product at a competitive price, along with the regular products in the market. To design something so good is one thing, and to make it a cost efficient, durable machine is totally another
But hats off to the guys who thought it out! Very innovative thinkin indeed!
Its cool n all but this thing will b used n abused so it prolly shouldn't have half of the stuff it does due to durability issues so to speak but then again if i had to sit in 1 all day every day i reckon id want to b comfy
@jlight121 Yes lots of new features. Unfortunately, the new entrance, hydraulics, suspension, fingerprinter, hybrid stuff, and interface is, while nice, totally impractical. it is not COST EFFICIENT. the hybrid drivetrain is a great idea--a conventional one, that is. A full diesel-electric system is a great idea, less components to break down, but the "water" hydraulics is foolish, oil is easier to seal and longer-lasting on components.
Brilliant design features but, for now at least, FAR too expensive to produce and expect to market. I know my old boss wasn't thinking about operator comfort/safety when he bought his last fleet of A40E's, more like "what's the fuel consumption" and "how quickly are they gonna go through tyres"! Still, if it wasn't for people designing things like this, we'd still be pushing wheel barrows.
@drummerboygrouch agreed perfectly. It's too expensive and over-designed to be effective. it's an excellent concept, but it'll need 30 years to be ready.
It's advanced, but durability is the prime need. The articulating bogie they currently use is good because it's durable. You gotta be able to push it, overload it, fuck with it, shoot it, and it keeps on chugging. THAT is essential.
30 years, really? Perhaps you remember President Kennedy's call to send a man to the moon by the end of the '60's. They pulled it off in nine years. Also, what would stop the engineers at Volvo from designing the hi-tech components to be durable? I think it's entirely possible.

everything bar the fingerprint system is super cool and impressive. the fingerprint bit would be very impractical on a site and prob prone to damage

Volvo should just refine current haulers.

You're not likely to see every single thing contained in these units, but I bet you'll start seeing some of the parts.

A hydrid drivetrain is a good idea though.
