you really can scape peaceful pieces of fine underwater-art ! I like the way you use the space given and the plants you use. A bit of Amano never hurts any scape.
@peachey2021 looks like Riccia fluitans alot of people dont like this due to high maintenance. its norm has lots of pearling if u have a proper setup.
I Am making my first planted tank, what kind of plants do you use for back ground?I really like the one on the left side with some white on it at 1:31
If you can't see the difference that CO2 makes then some other nutrient is limiting the growth. In most cases the you try to get the fertilizer and light correct but not much happens because CO2 is limiting and you finally give in and by the not so cheap CO2 equipment and boom things explode and you are taking out 3 pounds of underwater salad every week. Next is that you get tired of all the salad cutting and reduce light to get as less growth as you can stand.
it depends alot on the plants java moss for instance doesnt need alot of light or co2 to grow well neither does anubis. but if toss a banana plant or some hornwort under a light with low co2 be ready to clean up alot of dead leaves
WOW your tanks are disgusting! Mega props to you for creating such beautiful spaces. I am so jealous, even if i had enough money to attempt these somehow i would funk it up lol. TY for sharing.
Beautiful tanks like this require more grooming than cleaning. Mostly you need only frequent trimming, a weekly 10% water change and removing any dead material.
So.... you are saying plants physically absorb fish shit?
No. They they use the nitrate that is the end product of the biological filtering cycle. Also, some believe they actually use some ammonia as nutrients too. In a more tan lightly stocked tank, you gonna get a build of of crap. clean it.
I know how the nitrogen cycle works professor. If you have enough plant biomass, nutrient and light to process the free ammonia and nitrite, there is no reason to disturb the substrate. The lesson here is: don't overstock. Look at any of these planted tanks: they are all relatively lightly stocked.
I just corrected your post "plants eat poop..." A novice is going to read that & end up with shit everywhere, helping to cause an algae bloom. You don't need to touch the substrate. Just wave your hand over it while siphoning during a water change. That will get rid of crap. Even in a lightly stocked tank, you'll get a build up eventually, especially in a carpeted foreground. You can enjoy more fish if you want, for 5 minutes extra work. There's the lesson for you... student.
very very impressive, i love that sea of green, im gonna try and create the same thing but with dwarf hairgrass which i'll keep trimmed so it'll look like an actual lawn
hey i have a quick question on my driftwood i would like to attach a moss that can grow on the tip of it to make it look unique ! can u tell me if this is possible and what kind(s) of moss can be used like so and everything you would consider would be great> thanks
pardon my ingnorance, and try no to make fun of me,but i have to ask, for planted tanks you need co2 right? isnt that what everybody is tring to get rid of,you know for the planet? any answer will be apreciated. thank u
Your right Co2 is not essential! depends which types of plants you want to grow and how much light you give your tank. The higher the light level the greater the demmand for Co2. Beware Airating your tank with an airpump will drive out Co2 through gas exchange !! In a heavily planted well lit tank any available Co2 will soon be used up and therefore will require supplementing. You might try a Lowlight/low tech planted tank with Ferns, Moss's and Crypts with no Co2.
you may find it easier to plant the aquarium with the water level lowered (during Water change) tweezers or tongs can be used to plant stems directly into the substrate. moss and ferns can be tied to the expose bogwood branches using fishing line.
do you have to have a co2 system and fertilizer or a specific soil in order to have plants in your tank. (and i would not be adding as many plants as you would and neither would I plant high maintenance plants)
I have google maps with shows me images and videos of where i am watching(images from panoramio and videos of youtube). If you look on morden hall road, there is morden hall park, where there is a little image of your video.Have a look!
Have you written any articles or guidlines to making such beautiful planted tanks? I am very much interested in making a tank as nice as you, although it would be extremely hard :)
I want to keep my plants healthy but I don't want to do anything speacial. I own a variety of plants including swordplants and hornwort. would a standard flourescent tube be enough to support these?
Can anybody tell me wether my lighting is good enough for my plants. i have a 20 gallon with a total of about 19 to 20 watts lighting flourecant full hood. i want some low lighting plants like anacharis, java moss, java ferns, anubias, some amazon swords if possible. and i would like to know if they can be planted in pool filter sand or sand. and i would also want to know if i still need to fertilze them.i dont want to use co2 because i cant afford it plese help!thanks.(ANYBODY PLEASE RESPOND)
different plants have different light requirements. It is possible to maintain a low light planted tank if you choose your plants carefully. generally plant growth is accelerated under high light (Multiple T5 flourescent tubes or metal halide) though you must ensure adequete Co2 is provided with high light levels.
regular partial water changes are essential in a high tech planted aquarium. To ensure nutrients are always available dose heavy with liquid feritlisers and 'reset' weekly with large water change.
yo kristof how do you keep this clean, get it all out and clean or..., ill like to change everything?you cant get it al out right, and if you have sand on the bottom how do you clean that?i like to start a bigger tank and right now i just clean the whole tank, put the fish somewere else and emptying it, refresh half of the water, its with stones ,please let me know thanks Peter
All those plants use lots of organic matter as fertiliser. There is never any need in a planted tank to gravel clean! generaly stocking levels are low, just a few shoaling tetras or rasboras and a clean up crew which means minimal waste. Let your plants do all the work! just as in nature they are removing organics and toxins from the water. Healthy plants = healthy fish !
Stick with it shollia, often rocks and bogwood can look a little 'placed' if you insist on messing too much. try to avoid symetrical designs. If your looking for ideas read Takashi amanos nature aquarium books and pay particular attention the 'golden ratio', try googling golden ratio. It is often applied in great masters works of art like Leonardo Davinci. Look into it! P.S I do have a life (promise) :-)
wow- I really like that :D. I especially like the one near the middle with the rocks over grown with algae and all lowgrower plants- very Takashi Amano styled. Nice work :)
woow wkid tank im sorta new n need some real plants now but not too big as ive only gt a 18 gallon tank and wonderd what the almost moss like plant was called that grows on the floor and is not to big. thanks
Hey Alex thanks for watching! I think the plant you ask about is hemianthus calitrichoides! where in UK are you ? I can perhaps tell you of a good outlet for your plants!
i recently set up a new tank. When i was browsing for a good model, i saw some of the open-top aquariums similar to the ones at the start of the video. Have you ever had any fish jump out? That was a point that put me off the open-top style.
I did loose a SAE once so be careful. I think its importrant to ensure the co2 level doesnt get too high at night driving out the oxygen, im convinced this causes fish to jump!
kristof71, great video and tank! I love how you showed the progression of your tank as it evolved! I was just messing around on youtube and had never heard of a planted tank before.. I have a normal 55 gallon tank with about 20 fish or so in it... is it expensive to start a plant tank and can you only have certain types of fish in a plant tank?
Thanks for the comment stevo. Your going to need to upgrade your lighting on a standard lit aquarium. T5 tubes are very good and cheaper than metal halide. A good substrate is essential and a Co2 system is neccesary. Co2 can be done on the cheap with a DIY system (google)! avoid herbivorous fishes, Barbs, Gouramis, Livebearers. Try Tetras Or Discus in a tank of your size! Good luck!
Thanks man... by the way... nice job on the carp fishing... I bowfish for them back here because they have overpopulated... fun as hell to catch tho too!!!!
I am planning to get a single 65 watt for my 20 gallon. Do I need Co2 suppliments if I have a canister filter and external filters going. (Cannister is hooked to pump, so it provides some Co2)
You will need Co2 yes! Im afraid Your filtration will do nothing to increase your Co2 level. In fact any extra surface agitation will drive out Co2! You can get quite good results with cheap yeast based Co2 kits! try it
Hi, Afraid ive never used flouro excel (Seachem Right?) But I have heard of people having good results with it. I think its used ocassionaly to treat algae outbreak by simply raising the Co2 level.
Very nice aquarium,,,,Top!!!!

You will need Co2 yes! Im afraid Your filtration will do nothing to increase your Co2 level. In fact any extra surface agitation will drive out Co2! You can get quite good results with cheap yeast based Co2 kits! try it

Okay. How is your opinion on Florexcel? Its Carbon suppliment as long as ferts.

Hi, Afraid ive never used flouro excel (Seachem Right?) But I have heard of people having good results with it. I think its used ocassionaly to treat algae outbreak by simply raising the Co2 level.

3 x 14W right? you will need to add CO2 with this level of light. maintain Co2 at 25 and add liquid ferts regular. Watch em grow!!!!

kristof71 may i ask are you using the standard lighting in that 120 x 50 rena tank? or is it converted to t5?
Razorphade 4 years ago
Hey Razorphade, thanks for watching the video. The 120 x 150 Rena has been upgraded with 4 x 54 watt T5's as you probobly suspected.

What is the plant around 0:20? Not the hairgrass, the moss like looking thing. I am going to plant my existing tank.

Hi trio628, Thanks for watching my video.
The plant is Hemianthus callitrichoides (HC). It carpets very quickly under bright light with high Co2 levels.
