  • Thank you for the videos.

  • Your a good singer to brah.

  • I would suggest that instead of moving the C chord up 2 frets to make the D chord, to just play the D chord at x5777x It has the same notes as the traditional D major chord and sounds closer to what Cash is playing. It's also a lot easier to play for beginners than the traditional D major chord xx0232

  • hey justin youre simmply the best thanks to great videos im picking up where i left off ! truly friend your so talented ! really apreciated in our guitar comunity thanks .

  • Totally cool. Easy to play and even a poor singer like me can manage. Its now on my set list. Thanks J.S.!

  • first of all: justin thank you!

2nd: thats my first guitar song i've ever learned to play (incl. the vocals) :)))

  • This is a very "lean" video. =p

  • maaan YOU ROCK! :D

  • Dude - Your Rockin'

  • Dude you rock, you made this lesson so easy that I could learn, Thank you!

  • Dam I hate that F bar chord though I am getting better at it. I am still faster with the easy F chord. Thanks for the lesson Justin almost up to speed and it all down strokes which is what I am good at lol

  • verssion love this! but I want to know what brand of guitar and string! because the song sounds good string of

  • youre awesome..keep up the good work justin..

  • You don't have to apologize for your vocal, anyone can sing this song and it will still sound beutiful!

  • 16 people didn't hurt themselves.

  • LOVE YOUR VIDEOS JUSTIN. we all love you keep doing what you're doing<3 very thankful, im an absolute beginner and you have helped me immensely.

  • This video is a favorite on Jerusalem*

  • Hey i hope you answer my question:D what are your strings tune to?

  • LEARN 4 MORE easy JC SONGS HERE! :D /watch?v=OyUW6_0oxKQ

  • You're just the man, no other way to describe what you do on here...

  • I'm a beginner, I don't know what A minor, D bla bla bla means...

  • @mtdeezy Its on his website (free) or you can just look at where his fingers are placed like I did.

  • What are the chords for the little outro part where it goes "if i could start again.." etc?

  • Word of advice for begginers! Dont take guitar lessons if youre teacher does not like rock! (metallica, acdc ect) you will never learn anything thats cool! Electric or acoustic. I tool lessons when i was 8 and quit cus i was bored of learning lame songs after 6 months! Just b4 summer hols gone by i got my guitar from the attic and taught myself . Waaaaaaaaay better thn lessons

  • @shanedlfc I had lessons for a year when I was 10 and i went through two boring ass theory books. I quit for 5 years and now im back into taking justin's and marty's lessons... heaps better and free.. Most of the best guitarists of the previous generation were completely self taught who had lessons in the early stages but quit cos it was boring - gives everyone hope

  • haha, A minor would let you F.

    - great tune, johnny cash is my favorite artist ever, thank you!

  • Hi Justin, love the song, got your songbook and been practicing this one a lot. I just don´t get the strumming pattern you use for the chorus!? Been trying to play it like you but it just won´t work...help! I also got the RUST lesson but still couldn´t figure out which one you use...

  • Playing this along with Cash = tears.

  • Hey bro, is there anyway i can just use a regular A instead of the A-minor?

  • @roydawg4sho Why? Am is almost easier to do than A, and A doesn't really work with this song.

  • i'm learning guitar too. if you are a kid learning guitar add me as a friend. i learn so much from Justin.

  • hey justin, this is fred from France. 10 years ago, i appointed a teacher to learn me how to play guitar, it was a dream of mine since i was a kid. after 2 years, i gave up, unable to play anything cool.

one day, i found your site, took my old strat from the flight box, not remebering how to play a d chord, took you beginner course. 3 weeks later, i realize i can play some cool stuff much more better than when i got that teacher. many many thanks mate !

  • do you use that kind of little plastic thingy to strum with? I don't use any and I'm having a hard time hitting the right strings

  • Your guitar sound is beautiful <3

  • beautiful... thanks a lot... great help justin

  • wrong

  • "Just so simple just so what" great song title love it!

Actually, Hurt great song brilliant sound too!

But I struggle with the strumming part rhythm.

The rest I think I got now.

  • It's great to practice F chord on Eb tuning first if it's too tough on standart

  • I Justin, agree great song, it grows on you, love the way you play it

  • i dont know why but i really like your version of hurt :) .. i like your singing so much , espacially the chorus :)

    Good job :)

  • @fab006 It's not a complete F chord - I have my pinky fretting G on the high E string, and my index finger on the 1st fret of the B string, my second finger on the second fret of the G string and my third finger on the third fret of the D string.

I use my thumb to mute the low E and the A string so they don't sound when you strum.

I keep my pinky on the same fret throughout the chorus - it took a while to get used to it, but it does sound good ;)

  • Always a pleasure to learn with U and your lessons !! You're as great as music can be ;-) !

    Many thanks from France

    Cheers

    Nathalie XX

  • i love playing guitar because of you! :) you are the best teacher!

  • Hey this is me from Montenegro...just wanted to say youre great ...

  • Chali Q here I know you must have your own songs it would be good if you put some of them out because you are outstanding.

  • Does anyone else using this song as bouncig of place from bad feeling place?

  • I've learnt a hell of a lot from some of your video's in the past Justin, your an exellent teacher and decent feller for doing all this for free. Cheers.

  • @kragger1985 using the word 'decent' a bit loosely there, he is more than decent

  • @Recovery82 Watever

  • I've been playing this song off and on for a year or so and this is the first time that it's clicked for me. Thanks so much, excellent video!!

  • your the best guitar teacher ever !!!!! just out of curiosity why did you stop skydiving ??

  • Hey Justin, This is Pranab from India, an absolute beginner. You are a great teacher. I have great respect for you mate. The number of people on this planet who choose and dare to place the passion to help others above money is really really less. You undoubtedly are one of those. Wish you success in every pursuit of yours.

  • I don't think the vocal was too bad, I thought it fitting for this song. It makes it feel more pained with a little strain, ya know. Always able to add some capolicious to it.

    Cheers, mate.

  • Thanks for the great lesson, and powerful indeed.

  • i like the american accent on this one. lol. great job!!

  • I really love this song (NIN ftw), the Johnny Cash cover was very moving! Looks easier than I thought it'd be... But with my lack of guitar skills, I bet it's still difficult as hell. I'll give it a try :)

  • I may be wrong here, but shouldn't the third chord be a regular D chord? That's how I learned to play it, and when I listen to the Johnny Cash version that's definitely how it sounds. I apologize if I'm wrong, but I don't think I am.

  • @BC032679 I agree, on videos of him playing, he plays a regular D. Honestly I prefer Justin's anyway though...

  • Great job as always Justin awesome lesson thank you! Keith Uk.

  • That slide a c up to make a d trick is used to great effect in Dinosaur Jr's Get Me. The solo on the album version is one of the best solos of the 90s, imo.

  • Love this song. Can't wait for the book. Great work Justin!!!

  • great song

  • Wow!!! never heard this song befor, but when you started singing it, i had to learn it:) awesome stuff bro, never be sorry for YOUR vocals

  • Love how you sing the line "The needle tears a hole..."!

  • it was such a trip to hear justin singing this powerful song, and then we he's done hes back to regular old justin :)

  • wonderful singing

  • awesome stuff, many thx. Ordered your songbook as soon as I heard about it. Learning to play fairly simple yet great songs like this really gives me a much needed extra boost to keep going and finally move from beginner to intermediate :)

  • @TheBreakRecords but which part of it? the first one going: Am F C G or the second one going: Am F G G?

  • could use some singing lessons but other than that, ur pretty good.

  • @josh81799 His singing is real good. Im not just saying that b/c I like Justin....his singing is actually really good. Listen to the Redemption song cover too. Best vocal covers on youtube IMO :)

  • "A minor would let you F" :)

  • so what notes do we play at outro? C "D" Am or sth else??

  • Been following your channels for almost 3 years now and learned a lot. Quality stuff all as this lesson too. The latest folk modules are great. Thx!

  • I LOVE YOUR VOCALS ON THIS MAN.FULL OF FEELING AND REALNESS.

  • Thanks, I like to play the easy version cycling in the pattern Am C D, then try an embelishment on Am.After playing Am play a singular A note followed by open G string before the change to C then complete the cycle.Next cycle embelish the C by hitting the open A string before you play the C.Hope that makes sense and it sounds good.

  • Thank you for giving Trent his credit for the song. Most people dont.

  • skończ.

  • geniusz

  • Hi Justin, first of all great tutorial, i find it so much easier learning from what you've said.

Secondly would you ever consider doing a tutorial of either The Villagers - The Pact, Band of Horses - Funeral or The Avvett Brothers - January Wedding? or maybe all three!

Would be so so grateful, let me know!

    Thanks again

  • 1:30 great move :D

  • When I play it, for the chorus I keep my little finger fretting the 'G' on the thinnest string - really ties the chords together :)

  • @hypermegasphere on the record the piano is hitting the high G note through it all - and yes it sounds cool :)

  • @hypermegasphere sounds cool, how do i put my fingers for this?

  • @hypermegasphere If I may ask, how do you play the F chord so to have the pinky free?

  • @fab006 you can do a mini F or barre with your ring finger.

  • So much better than Marty Schwartz :)

  • Hey, Justin,

Thanks for the "easy play" lesson!

Didn't know about that D chord.

    Sounds great! .. very evocative!

  • thanks for you!!! from chile !!! you're a very good teacher !

  • Thanks for that one, Justin.

That open D from a C is used quite well in the intro to 'Humans Being' by Van Halen, I love that tune as much as this one (and it has an awesome guitar sequence and solo in it also!).

  • i dont know why people like this song johny cash was better when he was young, i mean hes a legend but this is like his most "popular" song i like ring of fire and cry cry cry and others of that time frame

  • Fantastic lesson Justin. You are the best.

  • @CHELSEA9636 Well D is the root note, and there's no C in there so I don't think that's it.. The notes played from top to bottom are D, F#, G, D, E, so I'm pretty sure it's called a Dadd9add11 chord haha. Just rolls right off the tongue doesn't it?

  • Very well done, dude :)

    Thanks a mill.

  • Best version i heared so far, gg!

  • I love how you smile and say "hey! Justin here!" after every thing,

like if you played something sad, it doesn't matter, if you played some fast awesome metallic lick it's nothing :)

  • @CHELSEA9636 eh wut? not quite sure when you mean, but c shape in 3rd position is C, it belongs in the Am-C-D changes. can you refer to the time please?

  • Thank you, JUSTIN! WE LOVE YOU!

  • @CHELSEA9636 It is a D chord. It doesn't matter what the shape is; there are many D chords all over the neck.

  • thanks to you, jedi and the team,

  • this has similar chords to House of the rising sun...Could you please tell me what key this song is in?

  • Good playin dude

  • @CHELSEA9636 The 5th string note on the 5th fret is a D. So it is a D chord, just not the beginner D.

  • genial esa cancion es espectacular

  • 2:50 Justins head starts to morph into a metronome!

  • @CHELSEA9636 it is, thats what justin played too

  • dude... i think i got my F chord down, what a good effin day!

  • @ColoSko nice one!

  • That song is pure LOVE

  • Great lessons here!

  • Thanks a lot, that's a much easier version compared to the one I picked up from the tabs. Now I finally can play it fast enough lol

Though I think the third chord sounds a little ackwardish. I'm pretty sure that E and G on the 2nd fret and B on the third sounds better, though it's a tough switch for noobs like me - try checking it out if you haven't already.

Anyways, thank you. I was dying to find an easy way to play this! ♥

  • Did you know that Chuck Norris improves his guitar skills by watching Justin's lessons? He has also donated some bucks. You may do that too.

  • your guitar sounds soo awesome :D

  • Thank you Justin! You're the man!

  • nice justin! more full song's !!!! xD

  • Great song and Great perfomance with great Explanation !!! Thums Up if you agree !

  • I've been hoping for a tutorial of this song from Justin! Thanks!

  • do karma police please !

  • Hey I was wondering if you would teach us the song Magic Bus (and I was wondering if you could do the more electric version like from Leeds, as it's much more interesting)

  • thanks dude

  • nice on J-man, awesome lesson, love ya! now do some Tom Petty songs pleeeease

  • Justin is that some kind of tuner next to the capo. Which one is it? Thanks Oh, great song.

  • awesome lesson... and your voice is NOT so bad at all, don't know that song but i wanna hear it now... thanks and greets from France

  • Very cool tune, great lesson, thanks for taking the time to help my playing improve.

  • please, please, please... would you teach us Jorma Kaukonen's masterpiece: "Genesis"

i'd love to play that song!!!

    p.s. you're amazing, a great teacher! i learned a lot from you

  • "My swedish G!!!" Love it!!! Nice lesson.

  • "G makes you an Aminooorr" :D

    great lesson thanks justin

  • Awesome Justin! \m/

  • "G will make you A minor"

    Agreed!

  • without doubt the best teacher there is, the relaxed delivery really helps. You are awesome Justin.

  • Great lesson, thanks!

  • I always love the way you incorporate the chord names into the song.

  • hi jsutin

Thanks for the lesson. Are you hurt on your arm?

  • It's the same D chord that's used in Man on the Moon by REM and at the start of The Engine Driver by the Decemberists.

  • Seriously this is the best guy in the world!

  • So everybody that is learning a lot of stuff from his lessons - When you grow up and have a huge reputation as a musician - GIVE SOME CREDIT to Justin ... One day if I make a big career as a musician I will let everybody know what a teacher is Justin !

  • Awesome!!! Wow!!!

  • You rock dude

  • hahaha, Am would let you F G

  • Awesome video!

  • Solitary man Johnny Cash version!

  • Sonvolt48. I think that's an Am7

  • Very nice Justin...however for anyone who might want to try, instead of a standard A-minor in the chorus, try this instead...

    0-0-2-2-3-3

Not even sure what this chord is but it is what he plays on the record.

  • Justin can you do suck my kiss by Red Hot Chilli Peppers???

  • Sweet sounding guitar , Justin !

  • Thanks J....Johnny Cash is a legend, and when I first heard this song I couldn't believe how well he covered a NIN song. But thanks again man for all the long hours you put in to help all of us

  • Ok my transcribing skills aren't that amazing but doesn't it go to a normal D chord after that C instead of the C shaped D you are showing here Justin? Been playing it for years with this song. But this is a great song for beginners, and a lot of fun to play.

  • @NewMetallica it's a mix of both the regular and this fancy one on the record.

  • Although you didn't replicate the feel that Johnny brought to this song... Your singing is awful. You kept the key even if you're in a different octave. You kept the essence of the song and brought us a magnificent example. Keep it up, love your lessons. ^-^

  • simply thanks for everything

  • awesome again justin !!

  • Thank you for the great lesson!

  • Thanks for the good vibes y'all - just finished editing the next 5 easy songs from the songbook - will be uploading one every week if I can...

  • @JustinSandercoe this isnt a request, but a question. Will you ever do Fade to Black?

  • @JustinSandercoe great lesson im so lookin fwd to the book ariving, but a question why only one upload a week if your knocking them out quite quicky, you say 5 allready, plus some you got up already thats only bout anotehr 86 to go :)

  • @TheGuitargurl37 I think it's better to spread the songs out so people get a chance to use them and also so I can have regular new stuff up when I need to take a break I can. Don't be so greedy :)

  • Brilliant

  • One thing Justin, I've seen in the book, hey joe by Hendrix is included. In that song, I suppose you just tell the chords, strumming pattern and all that or also the riff and tricky bits? I suppose everything is a simplified version for beginners, isn't it?

  • @TheBrowling In the book songs are all simplified for beginners - but I tried to pick songs that didn't need too much, but obviously Hendrix is simplified a lot yes... but I think we included he end riff bass/gtr line thingy.

  • Love it! Great singing and sound!

  • Nice work, Justin, appreciate it. Keep it up, mate. ;)

  • A beautiful song and really simple.

  • Brilliant, as usual Justin.

  • Quality, Justin. Simple is powerful isn't it?

  • Great video Just, my first song that actually sounds right, thanks again.

  • once again perfect

  • Teach NIN PL0X

  • Thumbs up if you want Justin to play more Johnny Cash!

  • hihi you really like the neck vibrato thing :)
