The alts that darken Elena's skin tone really should have been considered for her default palette. My dad's skin is darker than Elena's but by Kenyan standards they still considered him light-skinned or mixed. I love Elena but I think Capcom maaay have dropped the ball a bit on her design, unfortunately.

@metaXzero You should give Capcom more credit. Despite artistic flares/stereotypes, a majority of their Street Fighter characters do look like they came from their respective homelands, and the remainder are just over the top in general (Hakan/Necro). Elena kinda falls in the middle.

Like, imagine if Karin was the only Japanese rep in the SF cast. She wouldn't be unrealistic, implausible, or any less cool, but..I think we all know the sorts of reactions her design would receive.

It all depends on context. Do you mean Karin is introduced at the beginning of SF or that they waited until Alpha 3 to give Japan a rep. If the former, most reactions would be based on how the oddness of a school girl repping Japan in a game where everyone else is a muscled martial artist, not so much her accuracy of being Japanese. If the latter, it'd more likely be based on the weirdness of Capcom (a Japanese company) waiting so long to get themselves a rep.

@metaXzero No context needed. In both of your scenarios, you said people would find something odd, and odd is a good word for Elena's situation.

Just pretend Japan's slots were African fighters in all SF's, for whatever reason, and the first and only Japanese rep was Karin in Alpha 3. Great character!

But would Karin be as effective in her role as the hypothetical Makoto/Sakura/Ibuki? I think something would still be missing.

And sadly, I just think that's the same gap Elena leaves us with.

My point with the context was that I can't see them finding Karin off due to how much she does or does not resemble a Japanese person. Rather, she'd be found odd due to a Japanese school girl being the only rep for Japan with the game being Japanese. You're actually the first person I've met who actually thinks Elena's appearance is off and Capcom should've made more of an attempt to make her accurate to Kenyans.

have to be re-worked to function on her own (since currently, she's Sakura's Ken function wise). Character design wise though, I think she could carry herself. But then, thats me. I thought the SFIII cast was alright, but most of the world disagreed and SF got put into a decade long coma because of it.

But anyway, I do like Elena's design and character. But I will admit she didn't stand out like fan favs Dudley, Ibuki, Makoto, and the twins.

@metaXzero Don't get too wound up. We aren't discussing continuity (or lol, even the video, poor Alexx). I'm definitely not the first person to question Capcom's direction with Elena though. Just go to the videos of her ending, the one with her family portrait, and you'll see some pretty heated stuff. I've also found common views elsewhere, particularly with other artists that have drawn her.

Elena's a cool character, but being the only African rep, there's just so much to nit pick. Poor girl.

At least from what I saw, most of the discussion there wasn't heated. Just old discussions where people talk about how much they love Elena, why isn't she in SSFIV, or her weird looking family. Their was some discussion on her appearances, but that seemed more brought on by her family than Elena herself. Because I know I hardly see that on her theme vids.

Truth be told though, Capcom wouldn't be able to win even if they cared to try.

@metaXzero If Elena's folks were dark-skinned w/ curly-hair, or Elena had those features, I think fewer would have an issue with her. I know I wouldn't. Those are two minor changes they could've made. Sean turned out okay, didn't he?

Maybe Capcom wanted to depict mixed races in Kenya, or maybe they assumed nobody would care. Either way, SF probably doesn't sell much in Kenya, and we don't hear about African players in tourneys anyway.

I don't think that makes the discussion pointless though.

Honestly, I feel like even if they did do that, their'd still be enough people complaining about what they didn't do. Or what they did too much of. As for Sean, what is that guy? Because he was born in Brazil and his paternal grandfather was Japanese. I'm iffy on him.

It's more than likely they assumed no one (or not too many) would care. Which truth be told, is kinda what happened. At the very least, she's not as criticized as T. Hawk or Blanka.

@metaXzero There'll always be complaints, but not all are practical. If T. Hawk was a hot girl, I honestly think most of his critics would vanish.

Racial arguments in games are very deep though, and probably won't be resolved until more people from those countries/cultures start their own IP's. Until then, Elena will remain one of the few, and probably one of the most popular, African characters in video game history.

Heh, I bet Capcom says the whole SF cast is at least 1/5 Japanese anyway!
