I think that Bill Jeremy made that statement because in that time people of Italian or Jewish background were not considered "white". They were discriminated against as well. I remember reading in a Bio about Sinatra, how they wanted to give him a more all american name because Sinatra sounded too "ethinic" i guess...the same goes for pearl bailey's husband who was italian. born Luigi Balassoni was changed to Louie Bellson....so that was my interpretation...
I love the "CALGON" moment when she breaks down from her no good mooching sister is at home boozing it up and partying at her expense. It was stone cold!
If you ask most blacks, including myself, we are persons of color....so I am colored...and not African American.....my mixed heritage doesnt take into account that my mom is half white and my grandpappy is white (German).
yeah i feel you on that comment, I am of color but i'm of mixed race. I'm of native american/african on my mother side and el salvdorian on my father side. I'm just fairly dark.
Loved this movie. But ever since I've seen it I've always wondered about this scene...did he just lie about being black to make Dorothy feel more comfortable around her friends? Or is he completely white. Does anyone know?
"Coloured" is the 1930's lexicon for black. My dilemna was, does anyone know why he said he was black/coloured. I don't remember him alluding to being coloured anywhere else in the movie.
He lied about being colored, which also meant black back then, just to fit in and make her comfortable. In other countries ( like South Africa)the word coloured means a racial mix.
Yes, I know about the whole "coloured", "black" thing. The only thing that I wasn't clear on was whether he lied or not...I thought I had may had missed somewhere earlier on in the movie where he might have said he was coloured. Thanks.
