The horses that jumped were not forced, some of the horses wouldn't jump, they would just turn around and go back to their stall. The owners made sure the horses were safe, Red-Lips loved jumping. It was not Carver's fault that she went blind, neither was the horse's fault. Bullfighting kills the bull, horses in racing are staved to make them lighter, same as dog racing. Think about those, they force the animals to do it, but the Diving Horses loves their jobs. Do your research, please.
Never Said owning a Dog, Cat, or Horse was cruel! So your wrong by trying to tell people what they Believe. The Context is a High Diving Horse that caused a young girls Blindness. She got what she deserved it's called Karma and I don't care if you believe in anything@all but Humans are No Doubt Cruel to Earthlings as we slaughter them all. @gregawsimo so u belive owning a dog or cat or horse is cruel? Ive played with my cat and my dog and my horse and every time i was amused.... my dog as gralling and rolling all over but he was waging his tail... my cat was biteing my hand but she was purring... my horse was following me around and troting after me like he was gonna mess me up but when he got me all he did was bump me with his nose and trot around me... its cruel if the animal isnt amused.
You have to read the book to know the true story. In fact 1 horse died. Lighting. She died in CA after diving off into the ocean and getting pulled out to sea. They attempted to save her but she had already drowned. They cancelled the show and never dove horses in the open ocean again. The movie is nothing like the true story about Sonora. In fact she hated the movie. Read her book. A Girl and Five Brave Horses.
Regarding horse sports in general, just because the sport's not abusive and the horse isn't acting up, it doesn't mean the horse likes it. I mean take people for example, many do their jobs day in and day out, and they do it on their own with nobody foceing them; but many hate their jobs regardless. I'm not trying to start any arguments, just putting that thought out there.
@Olgalevin84 Yes that's true, but they're the ones stupid/crazy enough to do it. At least they had a choice as to whether or not they wanted to do it.
I'm glad that no horse got injured while they did that, but still making a horse jump off a 60 feet up in the air was probably not a good idea. I mean scaring a horse into jumping off? I'm sure the horse itself did not decide that it actually wanted to do it. I wouldn't be surprised if they shit themselves, literally!
Most horses aren't particularly afraid of heights, and many love to swim. So training them to do this is actually easier (and less stressful) than you'd imagine. If a horse was at all afraid to dive, you'd wind up with a horrific wreck as they tried to turn around on the platform or jump the side of the ramp. Never happened.
Watched this vid with a detached retina. Wife thought Sonora had hers repaired 20 years later. Told her that wasn't possible. (Surgery for me in a couple days.)
@CharlyAmira I can say horses aren't particularly afraid of heights because I've worked with the critters for about half a century. With their eyes mounted out on the sides of their heads, their binocular depth perception isn't quite what ours is, but they do have the ability to judge depths and distances reasonably well. (Otherwise they'd crash into stuff all the time, and jumping courses would be a real mess.)
@rajvader You don't train a horse to do this sort of thing by abusing it. You just start off with a very low platform and work-up. That's really how we train them to do almost everything.
i love this video but i think the song choice could b better ( no offence) i muted the sound and put on ''god gave me you'' by blake shelton and i liked it you should try it out i think it fits better =) but great video all in all
I'm sorry jacobean261 but that just isn't true and is very naive of you to say that. To say that those horses wanted to jump is preposterous. I have spent most of my life with them. They may not have been injured severely very often, but they were injured. Their spines are not built for that. Horses don't enjoy diving off of high platforms, and honestly, they aren't very intelligent. They are beautiful creatures but they are also creatures that will run INTO a burning barn.
In all the years Senora Webster Carver was diving horses, the horses were never injured. The SPCA was constantly around and never found any abuse or cruelty. Horses are very intelligent creatures and they would not have jumped if they did not want to, especially repeatedly. The Carvers never used any devices or whips or anything to get them to jump. Maybe it doesn't seem natural but it seems to me that they enjoyed it or they wouldn't have done it.
if you knew anything about horses would know there's not a whole lot you make them do unwilling. i've seen horse be more injured by the common "horse shoer" who doesn't know what the f*** he's doing. I would image the cost, time and energy not mention the amount of love and passion that goes into training a horse especially for a act like this they were taken care of. Plus without them or them being injured there was no show.
Great effort. I saw the horse and Sonora dive many times in the 1950s--loved the show and the steel pier--stumbled across the movie through my Netflix sub and what a great movie. Gril who played Sonora is girl who dances with Al Pacino in Scent of a Woman. By the way, the horses were never hurt, they were fine to my knowledge...
this video and its comments sicken me. this is pure, unjust animal cruelty and the only thing the gives me a shred of hope are the volunteers that worked to end this and the wonderful people at black beauty ranch that made sure these scarred animals lived out the rest of their lives in peace
"Remember the golden rule, do unto others as you would have them do unto you. :-)"
That applies to non-human animals too.
Would you, or anyone else who likes this, want someone to make you do something that you might not want to do? Especially if it's something that could frighten you or something that is unnatural to you?
@Madnessonman So you talked to the horses and learned from them that they didn't want to dive at all?
I'll agree with you: MAKING a horse dive is wrong, cruel, and abusive. However, these horses were TRAINED to do the dives. Much like a human diver trains to do this. And I'm pretty sure that, judging by how freaking huge a horse is, it would be more cruel for humans to be diving. Hmmmm... your argument sure doesn't follow... Try again later.
@Madnessonman Hey, I am not arguing that this is not cruel and I certainly would not train any of my horses to do this for much the same reason as I do not partake in cross country as I do not want to put them in any potential danger and diving is a big risk. BUT for something like this I know that even my Lady or Poppet who would do anything/go anywhere if I asked them to, would flat out refuse to run up the ramp and of the edge as they would be very frightened and there would be no making them
@Commie31 Ummm problem? what are you on? I didnt say they liked it, I believe you read what you wanted from that. Believe me when it comes to animal rights considering my chosen way of life I will certainly hold the moral highground here (ask respectfully if you wish to know what I mean by that). Every situation is different with regards to your question ie r u talking of defending a country, an executioner, being in a gang.... taking a life is wrong in my eyes (human or not) but there r levels
like i says no of the horses trough out it never got injured but weres in horseraceing horses are hurt and killed everyday on the race track and that isnt counted as crultily i think we need think about this.... if the horse didnt want to jump it would of just stopped at the top of the ramp and its not like it didnt know about if it did it all the time
Well well, they still do it! Look at this: youtube.com/watch?v=nNHPqutWDZc Does it look like animal cruelty to you?? The horse can walk backwards, it actually looks like it's having fun to me. But hey, what can a girl thats grown up with horses know? Note that this ramp is like a meter or 2 high, not as giant like in the clip.. >_>
It is near impossible to force a horse to do something it flat out does not want to do. I think it's amazing that these horses were brave enough to be a part of this. Imagine how strong the trust bond between the rider and the horse must have been!
i really enjoyed watching this Sonora Webster was a great girl, Only if Red Lips didn't rear her career would have lasted longer :( oh well thanks for a great video!
"The diving horses act was dangerous. No one, even its strongest fans and supporters denied that. The question is, was it more dangerous than many of our horse sports today? Thoroughbred racing, eventing, steeplechasing, etc., are all very dangerous to horse and rider. Many animal-rights advocates say that they should all be abolished. Most horses love their jobs. They love to run, jump, cut cows, etc. There were a lot of people involved who wrote that the diving horses loved their job, also."
wow, some of you people need to grow up a little and learn not to get so mad. nothing to even get upset about. take a big breath and breath....u can do it :)
@Kingpinz0r Yeah, you could build a swimming pool and a stable in your backyard and hope the neighbors don't notice anything. Horse-diving is illegal retard.
In honest truth this is NOT animal cruelty. Horses are great swimmers and all horses are different. Some are afraid to go into the water and others will happily jump with no problem. And I'm sure judging by the owners loving chracter she would not have let an animal in the water if they did not want to be in there.
I LOVE this video! It was not animal cruelty. It was the fricking attraction from decades and decades ago! Getting upset about it now accomplishes nothing. Just appreciate it for the amazing feat it was! Those horses were beautiful and unbelievably brave, talented creatures who deserve respect for what they did. Not to have everyone freaking out that it was 'animal cruelty.' Grow up people.
Interesting video and history. Standards were different decades ago, so judging using today's standards is not really valid. Horse racing kills a lot more horses than diving did, yet it still is in existence.
According to Wikipedia and the entry on Frank Carver, his favorite horse drowned after a dive in the ocean. His broken heart over that death and his failing health diminished his desire to live.
cool video posting on my writers blog I'm doing a book review about the best horse ever a children's chapters book - by author alice delacroix and illustrator ronald himler, I posted your video on there because I've never seen or heard of anything like this! how fascinating, thanks for making this video, good educational story here :)
Great photos ..Thanks for sharing .. Never seen anything like it before . O For all you cruelty to Animal people who are not vegetarian or buying your food from freerange Then you are taking part in one of the worlds greatest affairs of animal cruelty ,Battery farming ! So stop your whining and appreciate awareness comes in gradual shifts ..What we do today is viewed as normal but in the future we will be looked upon as being somewhat retarded .
I, myself, am an animal lover. I would take into consideration that if this were so traumatic to the horses and they simply jumped because they were so scared and tortured, they would not be so easy to handle when coming out of the water, their flight response would be kicked in and they would be flying out of the water kicking, no matter who or what was in their way and they would never be able to get them back up that ramp again after the first time. NOT animal cruelty!

Let me ask you all do you own a dog? Most of you are going to say yes. next question do you ask your dog to sit? Most of you are going to say yes. Think about it you a human they are animals that God gave us to show how awesome they are. diving horses is not harmful! Rescue dogs jump from plans to save people from drowning, think about it if a person trained a dog to rescue someone form drowning and you where that person wouldn't you be thankful? If a horse didn't want to jump they wouldn't!!!!!

I read Sonora's autobiography. In the book, Sonora and everyone else said the horses seemed to LOVE diving -- Apparently it entertained them. They were excited about doing it each day. Animal activists shut down the performance claiming it was animal cruelty. My little doggy likes doing her tricks too! Not cruelty!

Great video - really interesting - didn't know horses could even do that!! Well done on compiling it!!
Shame about all the idiots who have to give you abuse over this!! To all of them - get a life - its a good video. If you have nothing good to say - say nothing!!
LOVE this video! Love the movie "wild hearts can't be broken' and would love to find the book that sonora wrote that the movie was based on!!! Would have loved to been around back in the 30's to see this in person! If people don't agree with this then why the heck are they even bothering to watch it??
@tonigirl8 If you look, you can find the book in rare and out of print stores now and then. It's also been reprinted and is available in paperback, but the original copies are much more valuable. It's a good book, different from the film, but we all know that Hollywood takes liberties when film making.
this is a nice video- who did you interview before you posted this video? I 'd like to tell you that I the grandaughter of Arnette French- who was one of the original diving horse women along with her sister Sonora. The movie really took alot of liberties with the actual facts. Just thought you'd like to know. Thanks for keeping memories of my grandmother and Great-Aunt alive. Sarina
Moi j'aime bien de toute façon c'est un sport comme un autre, certe un peu dangereux mais a cette epoque on avait pas le meme vision des choses ! En tout cas j'aime !
This horse diving is STILL happening, without doubt it is cruelty to animals. I am sorry but I do not believe for a moment that no horse was or has ever been injured. This is such an unnatural thing for a horse to do, yet again people abuse the trust that these beautiful creatures put in us.
This definitely is not cruel. If you would research, out of all the seventy or so years the act was on not one horse was ever inured. Horse racing, on the other hand, injures and kills thousands and thousands of horses. That is cruel.
Anyways, thanks for the awesome video, coolinChrist!
I LUV HORSE TO BITS..AND KNOW PRETTY MUCH EVERYTHING ABOUT THEM..AND THIS STUPID "HORSE DIVING" IS THE WORST THING EVER!! WHAT A CRUEL AND THOUGHT LESS THING TO DO TO SUCH A BEAUTIFUL ANIMAL.!! :O
@ACSshowjumping1 I seriously doubt you know pretty much everything about horses. Anyone who makes a statement like that doesn't even have the good sense to know that most people have forgotten more than you know.
i wouldnt call it animal cruilty because a horse wasnt injured, if though a horse was infact hurt, then i would be right on top of em shouting animal cruelty!
@coolinChrist -- This is unquestionably animal cruelty, and the act was shut down as such. The last diving horse went to Black Beauty Ranch, which is an animal sanctuary in Texas. Maybe the trainers didn't outright mistreat the horse, but jumps like this are very dangerous, and horses were injured and had to be put down. It's not natural for a horse to dive, and it's not right for humans to make them dive just for our entertainment. Please think about how the horse feels. Jesus would have.
@PBecker1999 Thanks for your response! I appriciate your views and opinions. But, I would like to say, besides saying that I think it's cool, I have never actually stated my opinion on the discussion of this beging cruelty animals. In the video I simply wrote what I had read. Thank you again for watching.
@PBecker1999 Unsure of the date this video was taken but it looks fairly recent ... and it appears THEY STILL DO THIS. youtube. com/watch?v=nNHPqutWDZc&feature=fvw
@PBecker1999 ,,Arnette, who was 15 when she took her first dive on horseback, remarked in an interview that "Wherever we went, the S.P.C.A. (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) was always snooping around, trying to find if we were doing anything that was cruel to animals. They never found anything because those horses lived the life of Riley. In all the years of the act, there was never a horse that was injured."
@PBecker1999 You honestly think that horse diving is cruel? That's completely absurd. One reason being that people were on the horses as the horses dived. There are many people who do diving and they do just fine (I myself am a diver). And then there are horses that dive. Need I remind you that horses have much thicker and denser bones than humans? So it's definitely not cruel in terms of pain since there weren't even any injuries to the horse.
@PBecker1999 (cont'd) And yes, you could say that the horses didn't want to do this, but they were trained to do this. Dogs are trained to sit/fetch but that doesn't make those things cruel. And yes, if you wanted to say that they sometimes used prods, electrical jolts, and trap doors to make unwilling horses jump, but those were never anything more than allegations, most likely made by PETA people or something. OJ "allegedly" murdered his wife, but it doesn't mean it's true.
Coolin Christ....don't worry about what the animal rights people say....I worked on the Steel Pier for years and knew Sonora personally. As many of my friends and Steel Pier coworkers can attest to....the horses were NEVER mistreated and well taken care of.......also if you're interested in diving horses, there were also Diving Zebras and alligator wrestling at Willow Grove Park. PA. A gentleman who lived in Atlantic City (last name Bramble) wrestled and owned the alligators.
@bcn1211 You must be one of the PETA people....only 'believe' what you hear...a mere FOLLOWER. I was there, know what I saw, the horses loved it, they were well taken care of and happy to perform. PERIOD.
Didn't say it was 'normal'....not normal for parrots to talk either....but they do.
@bcn1211 I am not debating you on the issue of animal cruelty. If you think it is, then more power to you. I'm pefectly fine with that. I have not stated my opinion on it, so I ask that you please stop making rash statements. I can tell you really are passionate about horses and I think that is a good thing.
The ramp is too narrow for the horse to turn around and too steep for it to be able to walk backwards down. The top of the ramp is also sloped towards the water - the horse has no choice once it is on the ramp. A vile thing to 'train' a horse to do.
The movie about Sonora is my favorite movie of all time. I've seen it probably 50 times, and absolutely love it everytime I watch it. Thanks for the history in this video!
You spelled "permanently" and "cruelty" wrong. It's an interesting historical tidbit, however it is a cruel thing to make an animal do, and also, obviously, dangerous for those who ride. It's still going on, and should be stopped. If you make a film that is seen publicly, expect to take the heat, or get out of the kitchen.
I think this can't be healthy for the horses, but your video is amazing! All the facts are really fascinating! WOW! Great job, really interesting part of history :)
Great video! I just saw the movie "Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken" a few days agao, even tho it's fairly old today (made in 1991). I was fascinated by the story and did some research of my own. Loved your video, and as far as the comments go, many things have happened in history that are looked at differently today. I would have loved to have an opportunity to talk to the real Sonora-I bet she had some great stories! Good job, coolinChrist, and thank you!
I agree! This isn't about animal cruelty is about history and I just learned about this event in a trivia book about horses and thought I would see if there was something on You Tube. Thanks for the post.
I Can Remember when i was little i went to see diving horse in Atlantic city ,it was a good show....wish it was still there.I Remember I Wanted A Horse Just Like That One.
I LOVED this video! You did such a great job showing people a bit of history about Sonora and horse diving! :) (And I loved the song, too. Very fitting!)
yeah its funny how people freak out and say these horses look "petrified" the quality of the pics are so old you cant tell the expression on the horses face. hahahahaha anddd furthermore none of these horses were ever forced to dive, Carver never used anything to make them do something they didnt want to do. he was a good horseman and a great showman. everyone needs to stop being so damn sensitive hahahaha
Saw diving horses Steel Pier NJ 1965 up close-personal. Met rider & trainer. Was an experience I'll NEVER FORGET !! Courageous duo, trilling sight!!! Stayed for 2 shows. Those horses never missed a beat & to watch them go up the elevator ramp, drop & put their front legs over the edge, WOW !!!! That is how they did it then. Sonora jumped on as they trotted up ramp & just dove off My aunt knew Dr Carver....
As a boy I spent summers working at Steel Pier. I cleaned up after the horses and loved it. I never saw either Gordonel or John the Baptist balk at goung up the ramp.
@friesianfan69 i think your ignorant. have you EVER met a horse that will do something he or she doesnt want to??? cuz in my experience horses know they're bigger and like to take advantage of that. hahahahaha besides, its like saying showjumping is cruel to animals. its not at all natural for a horse to jump a 6 foot fence thats almost just as wide as it is tall.. but some love it and they do it all the time (horses i mean). dont be so sensitive
once up the ramp, the horse would have little option but to dive, there was no way for the horse to turn around and coming back down the steep ramp backwards was incredibly dangerous and difficult. Due to horses field of vision, they would not have known just how big the drop really was nor where it actually started. So it would be fairly easy to force them into it and make them jump against their will. Interesting video though!
@killcrazy26 you cant make a horse do something against they're will, when will you people learn this???? if a horse didnt want to go off that tower all he or she would have to do is make up they're mind NOT to do it. horses are fairly good at being very stubborn. and for the third time, why is everyone so sensitive when they use our beautiful creatures for things like police control and war?? horses die everyday for no reason. ive never heard of a death from diving.
If a horse didn't want to dive, it would not go off. Especially over and over. Horses are very intelligent and would be like, "Hell No, I'm not going up there again. I know what happened last time. "Apparently none of the horses were hurt. A lady was blinded by the sport and chose to continue for many years.
@joant1221 thank you!!!! omg ive been saying to people "stop being so sensitive" people are like convinced this is the worst thing to do to a horse hahahahaha
Well, I don't think you could 'make' a horse do that. Just like with dogs and search and rescue, or police dogs, they have to have the right temperament, and the drive to do it. He would just get himself hurt if he didn't want to.
People don't understand that you can't really 'make' most animals do anything against their nature unless he wants to. They will give you a big F U if not!
@gobarrelracing do you think it is any worse than the sliding stops that western horses are forced to perform when a harsh bit is in their mouth, could you get your horse to perform the same moves bitless?
haha thats sweet man i bet the horses loved that. and all you babies...quit crying these are horses not people, there are people dying in africa today from starvation and children beaten to find diamonds, now thats something to cry about....not a horse diving off a diving board.
Hey guys, I didn't realize when I posted this that it would be so contraversal. This video was not posted to decide weather or not this is cruelity to animals, but as a small interesting bit of history. I ask that you please be nice in your comments, even when stating your opinons, and respect the opinions of others. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
@coolinChrist I don't believe a word of that! What did you think people were going to say!? You are not Fooling anybody with your supposed intentions. "YOU NEW" people were going to get worked up! "YEAH LETS WATCH A HORSE DIVE FROM 4 STORIES!" Give me a break! "YEAH THATS A NORMAL ATTRACTION!"
@bcn1211 I'm sorry if I have offended you. I honestly didn't think that anyone would get offended as it happened over 50 years ago. If you do not like what I have posted then you are under no obligation to watch it. Once again, sorry for any miscommunication.
@coolinChrist This was a very interesting video and I enjoyed it for the Historical value. But I must say that It appears to me that these animals do not look happy doing this. Regardless this happened along with a lot of other strange stuff in the past. I would like to ask, "do you have people diving into little buckets?" Now that is interesting.
Do people really believe these horses jumped off a cliff just because they wanted to? Seriously? What they don't tell you is they we're shocked and beaten to get them to jump. No horse in their right mind would just jump.
I absolutely loved the movies Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken and like finding out about the history of real horse diving. For those of you who say it's animal cruelty please let it rest. It's not like this is something still happening today. There is lots of cruelty in our past, both towards people and animals. It's all a part of our history, and no need to judge something that isn't even occuring anymore. Thanks for the video!
I liked your video about The diving horse, but the first photo of a girl was not Sonora Carver or her sister Arnette Webster French. They were my aunts and I do not know who that photo is of.
Fascinating and great job on the video. It is amazing that these horses are careful jumpers, but don't really seem afraid!! If you know horses, you know that a horse being forced to do something he doesn't want to will put up a BIG fight...That's just not happening in the videos I've seen.
I've been reading about it and apparently they were forced to go down, like a shoot, they couldn't turn around and the only way out was to jump. They would also get whipped ectect. I've noticed a lot of thumbs down for people saying its cruelty so please don't give me a thumbs down/ I am telling the truth.
@baristaqueen420 Not really, I have read up on it loads. Apparently the shoot they went down was closed off and also it was too narrow for them to turn around, so if they were going to get down, they had to jump. Ah well.
@SkullPhace yeah lots of people say that. but you try pushing a thousand pound animal off a diving board. let me know how that works for you. HAHAHAHA
To byl sport??

The horses that jumped were not forced, some of the horses wouldn't jump, they would just turn around and go back to their stall. The owners made sure the horses were safe, Red-Lips loved jumping. It was not Carver's fault that she went blind, neither was the horse's fault. Bullfighting kills the bull, horses in racing are staved to make them lighter, same as dog racing. Think about those, they force the animals to do it, but the Diving Horses loves their jobs. Do your research, please.

(Surgery for me in a couple days.)
rajvader 4 months ago
@rajvader
How can you say horses aren't afraid of heights?
A horse CAN'T see depths.
Which makes it impossible for the horses to know when, how and if they're going to ''land''.
They simply don't know.
A horse would never ''dive'' out of its own, or it'd have to be in great danger.
And right there is the only way to train this ''discipline''.
To ''scare'' the horse enough to make the jump.
This is animal cruelty, thats how simple it is.
CharlyAmira 3 months ago
@CharlyAmira I can say horses aren't particularly afraid of heights because I've worked with the critters for about half a century. With their eyes mounted out on the sides of their heads, their binocular depth perception isn't quite what ours is, but they do have the ability to judge depths and distances reasonably well. (Otherwise they'd crash into stuff all the time, and jumping courses would be a real mess.)
rajvader 3 months ago
@rajvader You don't train a horse to do this sort of thing by abusing it. You just start off with a very low platform and work-up. That's really how we train them to do almost everything.
rajvader 3 months ago
This "sport" if you can call it that, was just as dangerous for the divers too not just animals.

They are beautiful creatures but they are also creatures that will run INTO a burning barn.
ramaroodle 5 months ago

"Remember the golden rule, do unto others as you would have them do unto you. :-)"
That applies to non-human animals too.
Would you, or anyone else who likes this, want someone to make you do something that you might not want to do? Especially if it's something that could frighten you or something that is unnatural to you?
Making a horse dive is wrong, cruel and abusive.
Madnessonman 10 months ago
@Madnessonman So you talked to the horses and learned from them that they didn't want to dive at all?
I'll agree with you: MAKING a horse dive is wrong, cruel, and abusive. However, these horses were TRAINED to do the dives. Much like a human diver trains to do this. And I'm pretty sure that, judging by how freaking huge a horse is, it would be more cruel for humans to be diving. Hmmmm... your argument sure doesn't follow... Try again later.
Sasuke6x 10 months ago
@Madnessonman Hey, I am not arguing that this is not cruel and I certainly would not train any of my horses to do this for much the same reason as I do not partake in cross country as I do not want to put them in any potential danger and diving is a big risk. BUT for something like this I know that even my Lady or Poppet who would do anything/go anywhere if I asked them to, would flat out refuse to run up the ramp and of the edge as they would be very frightened and there would be no making them

In honest truth this is NOT animal cruelty. Horses are great swimmers and all horses are different. Some are afraid to go into the water and others will happily jump with no problem. And I'm sure judging by the owners loving chracter she would not have let an animal in the water if they did not want to be in there.
dertrix37 1 year ago
I LOVE this video! It was not animal cruelty. It was the fricking attraction from decades and decades ago! Getting upset about it now accomplishes nothing. Just appreciate it for the amazing feat it was! Those horses were beautiful and unbelievably brave, talented creatures who deserve respect for what they did. Not to have everyone freaking out that it was 'animal cruelty.' Grow up people.
SecretlySexy 1 year ago
Interesting video and history. Standards were different decades ago, so judging using today's standards is not really valid. Horse racing kills a lot more horses than diving did, yet it still is in existence.
According to Wikipedia and the entry on Frank Carver, his favorite horse drowned after a dive in the ocean. His broken heart over that death and his failing health diminished his desire to live.

This definitely is not cruel. If you would research, out of all the seventy or so years the act was on not one horse was ever inured. Horse racing, on the other hand, injures and kills thousands and thousands of horses. That is cruel.

Sasuke6x 10 months ago

The ramp is too narrow for the horse to turn around and too steep for it to be able to walk backwards down. The top of the ramp is also sloped towards the water - the horse has no choice once it is on the ramp. A vile thing to 'train' a horse to do.

@friesianfan69 i think your ignorant. have you EVER met a horse that will do something he or she doesnt want to??? cuz in my experience horses know they're bigger and like to take advantage of that. hahahahaha besides, its like saying showjumping is cruel to animals. its not at all natural for a horse to jump a 6 foot fence thats almost just as wide as it is tall.. but some love it and they do it all the time (horses i mean). dont be so sensitive
baristaqueen420 1 year ago
once up the ramp, the horse would have little option but to dive, there was no way for the horse to turn around and coming back down the steep ramp backwards was incredibly dangerous and difficult. Due to horses field of vision, they would not have known just how big the drop really was nor where it actually started. So it would be fairly easy to force them into it and make them jump against their will. Interesting video though!
killcrazy26 1 year ago
@killcrazy26 you cant make a horse do something against they're will, when will you people learn this???? if a horse didnt want to go off that tower all he or she would have to do is make up they're mind NOT to do it. horses are fairly good at being very stubborn. and for the third time, why is everyone so sensitive when they use our beautiful creatures for things like police control and war?? horses die everyday for no reason. ive never heard of a death from diving.
baristaqueen420 1 year ago
If a horse didn't want to dive, it would not go off. Especially over and over. Horses are very intelligent and would be like, "Hell No, I'm not going up there again. I know what happened last time. "Apparently none of the horses were hurt. A lady was blinded by the sport and chose to continue for many years.
This country has become such a bunch of wusses.
joant1221 1 year ago
@joant1221 thank you!!!! omg ive been saying to people "stop being so sensitive" people are like convinced this is the worst thing to do to a horse hahahahaha
baristaqueen420 1 year ago
Thats wery therrible , That could be DANGEROUS ´! ! ! ! ! :OOOOOOOOOOO
TheAmanda2208 1 year ago
Well, I don't think you could 'make' a horse do that. Just like with dogs and search and rescue, or police dogs, they have to have the right temperament, and the drive to do it. He would just get himself hurt if he didn't want to.
People don't understand that you can't really 'make' most animals do anything against their nature unless he wants to. They will give you a big F U if not!

@gobarrelracing do you think it is any worse than the sliding stops that western horses are forced to perform when a harsh bit is in their mouth, could you get your horse to perform the same moves bitless?
yamiupsolate 1 year ago
haha thats sweet man i bet the horses loved that. and all you babies...quit crying these are horses not people, there are people dying in africa today from starvation and children beaten to find diamonds, now thats something to cry about....not a horse diving off a diving board.

Hey guys, I didn't realize when I posted this that it would be so contraversal. This video was not posted to decide weather or not this is cruelity to animals, but as a small interesting bit of history. I ask that you please be nice in your comments, even when stating your opinons, and respect the opinions of others. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
coolinChrist 1 year ago 2
@coolinChrist I don't believe a word of that! What did you think people were going to say!? You are not Fooling anybody with your supposed intentions. "YOU NEW" people were going to get worked up! "YEAH LETS WATCH A HORSE DIVE FROM 4 STORIES!" Give me a break! "YEAH THATS A NORMAL ATTRACTION!"
bcn1211 1 year ago
@bcn1211 I'm sorry if I have offended you. I honestly didn't think that anyone would get offended as it happened over 50 years ago. If you do not like what I have posted then you are under no obligation to watch it. Once again, sorry for any miscommunication.
coolinChrist 1 year ago
@coolinChrist This was a very interesting video and I enjoyed it for the Historical value. But I must say that It appears to me that these animals do not look happy doing this. Regardless this happened along with a lot of other strange stuff in the past. I would like to ask, "do you have people diving into little buckets?" Now that is interesting.
bcn1211 1 year ago
Do people really believe these horses jumped off a cliff just because they wanted to? Seriously? What they don't tell you is they we're shocked and beaten to get them to jump. No horse in their right mind would just jump.

I absolutely loved the movies Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken and like finding out about the history of real horse diving. For those of you who say it's animal cruelty please let it rest. It's not like this is something still happening today. There is lots of cruelty in our past, both towards people and animals. It's all a part of our history, and no need to judge something that isn't even occuring anymore. Thanks for the video!
Bec825 2 years ago
It is unnatural for a horse to do this, just because there isn't a "record" of a horse being hurt doesn't mean it is uncruel.

If you know horses, you know that a horse being forced to do something he doesn't want to will put up a BIG fight...That's just not happening in the videos I've seen.
babybugs72 2 years ago
I've been reading about it and apparently they were forced to go down, like a shoot, they couldn't turn around and the only way out was to jump. They would also get whipped ectect. I've noticed a lot of thumbs down for people saying its cruelty so please don't give me a thumbs down/ I am telling the truth.
SkullPhace 2 years ago 3
@SkullPhace ignorant.
baristaqueen420 1 year ago
@baristaqueen420 Not really, I have read up on it loads. Apparently the shoot they went down was closed off and also it was too narrow for them to turn around, so if they were going to get down, they had to jump. Ah well.
SkullPhace 1 year ago
@SkullPhace yeah lots of people say that. but you try pushing a thousand pound animal off a diving board. let me know how that works for you. HAHAHAHA
