@Vizzoid...you really need to learn your Queen songs...that wasn't we are the champions that Fernandez and Rude came out to it was We Will Rock You...and just for kicks the Road Warriors came out to Ironman by Black Sabbath
I didnt get the chance to see the road warriors on tv since i was born in '92 but it sure looks like they could kick some ass wrestling has changed so much but i got the pleasure of witnessing wwf during the attitude era oh the good old days eh
Manny and Rude were supposed to win the 87 crockett cup but manny beat tully blanchard in the locker room because tully mouthed of to him. Manny saved tully from getting a beat down at a denny's a few years ealier. this is in a shoot interview manny did. it is on youtube. this is why rude went to wwf.
@MrFrenchHeritage I wish I had been born just a few years sooner so I could have appreciated it a bit more. Great times back then with WWF at the St. Louis Arena then the NWA would be right behind them at the Kiel Auditorium. 80's wrestling FTW.
Manny was a former football player, navy seal, and pretty legit tough guy. He should have got a bigger push. Some of his matches against bockwinkle from southern championship wrestling were great. Rude and him hated one another. I would have liked to of seen Manny and Wahoo team up. They did have some good strap matches with one another though.
thats right! If U told Manny, Road Warriors, or Rude that they were a fake, U'd hit the ground pretty fast. manny has cleaned out a few bars from what I heard.
I thought when I watched the 80's wrestling now It would be lame but it's just as exciting as I remember it it still has that incredible energy that today's wrestling is missing
Manny fernandez was a legit tough guy.war veteran martial artist. rick rude, and hawk and animal all were bouncers and trained with each other. great talents, sorely missed now.
This match is from 3/9/87 ( Florida-the Eddie Graham memorial card-) in case sombody wanted to know.Rude and Manny have the NWA belts and the Roadies did not win the NWA international belts until 3/12/87,so I'm not sure what they are,but possibly the NWA 6 man tag team titles they held with Dusty.
Back in the 80's the Nwa packaged these shows to different regions . I lived in West Virginia and South Carolina and got Mid Atlantic Wrestling, then in South Carolina on a public acess channell we recieved another show that had other commentaters cant remember who they were but it wasnt Bob Caudle or Crockett or Tony schavanonie. Those were the NWA titles Rude and the Bull beat the Rock and Roll Express
who was the announcer for this match? Doesnt sound like Tony Schvanonie, David Crockett, or any announcer I recognize. I thought it was neat that this match was on Souhrern Pro, a very old school promotion.
This is the NWA, Rude and Fernandez were a solid heal team, with Paul Jones, and the Road Warriors had just dropped AWA belts around this time, and they started there run for the Crocketts, then they unfortunately went to WWE, which they kept there persona for a while, but by the time they left the had the dummy Rocko, (I think) as there mascot, then Japan, NWA etc etc, HAWK & ANIMAL were the real deal at one time, but Vince got ahold of them...
The referee for this match looks like the late Pee Wee Anderson, or his REAL first name Randy Anderson, I'm sure it is Randy Anderson as the referee for this match though.
I believe I saw Paul Ellering holding a pair of world tiles. I saw Rude & Bull with their belts on. Could someone tell me what tag-team champions the Road Warriors were at the time?
I am normally about embracing what is going on in the persent and forgetting the past, but in the case of pro wrestling, BRING BACK THE CLASSICs! I mean hear the pop at the Bayfront Center in St. Pete.
A lot of superstars could learn from these guys, from mat work, to psychology, to cutting a promo. I understand the McMahon is the only game in town, but his product could be SO much better with a little effort. But I guess he has no reason to change
It could but Vince has probably lost some of his desire. He is competitor at heart and the lack of competition which he himself drove out is not there to push him or challenge him. But I agree the product could be so much better. In time things will change if not of Vince's decision just life. The guys these days can't and do not want the longevity of Flair, Dusty, Hogan, and others from that era. They want money and not have to take a beat down for ever.
This was Jim Crockett and Verne Gagnes effort to thwart Vince McMahon. Gagne had the Road Warriors, who were the AWA World Tag Champs at this time. The Road Warriors, who would soon leave Gagne for good, began their real NWA run here. Manny and Rude, for the moment were the NWA Tag Champs. Shortly after this Rude left for the WWF where. Crockett then allowed Ivan Koloff to get 1/2 of the belts, before the NWA belts ended up back with The Rock N Roll Express after a phantom title change.
I think your timeline may be a bit off; the Warriors were AWA champs in 84, Rude & Fernandez won the NWA belts in 86. The Warriors were in the NWA by then. This match had to have happened in late 86, early 87, before Rude jumped to the WWF. Flair's listed as the champion, timeline which would've placed him in his 4th reign (after Rhodes, before Garvin).
You are right. This is from 1987 right before the Great American Bash 87 Tours. I have this on VHS taped directly from TV and remember it like it was yesterday. Flair and Rhodes followed this match although it did not last long on TV as time ran out.
This was wrestling at its best!! Great wrestling, great interviews and even though you knew it was fake. It was still unpredictable.Dark, smoke filled arenas and when the wrestlers came out they walked through the crowd. Hulk and Vince pussified pro wrestling.
i believe Ted Turner phased in the new managment and systematically changed everything...as he once said in an interview "i'm in the wrastlin' business"...
so cards and matchmaking were wild in that time...kinda adds to the whole lore of the era...
EXACTLY what wrestling company was this?? I ask this because this appears to be some indy federation that was able to pull in stars from different companies. Are Rude and Fernandez the NWA tag champs here?? If they were, it would explain the DQ finish. I know there is NO WAY IN HELL that the NWA would allow a title change in a non-NWA event.
This was CWF down in Florida at the St. Pete CWF was part of the NWA and Crockett was moving in. Dusty was booker for Crockett and booker for CWF for years before leaving to joing Crockett , so it was the two brands within the same company putting on a card. But dont be fooled Crockett was raiding the talent.
Still don't like the way the Florida belt was treated. It's amazing what has come out over the years regarding the development of the NWA & professional wresting as a whole. And looking back, things I didn't understand makes sense (the abandonment of the Florida title, or why the NWA had more titles as opposed to the WWF's 3, for instance)
NWA was the brand, an umbrella so to speak of different territories (Mid-Atlantic, CWF, Memphis, World Class, Mid-South) It was a way to keep things under CONTROL without legit competition. Think the Mafia with the most powerful promoters running the whole thing deciding who becomes champ and for how long.
WWF was for many years part of the NWA and considered only a territory with the WWF Title names the WWF Heavyweight title. Vince Jr changed all that when he started the invasion.
The Rude/Fernandez team managed by Paul Jones would have been legendary with those guys getting a solid push. When Rude bailed Manny and Jones never recovered and it's too bad.
I agree. They were definately on to something as a team. Rude would be in the WWF shortly after this. He had a great career there too, but I wish he would have hung around the NWA with Jones and The Bull a little longer.
Late 80's AWA had "Bad Company W/Pat Tanaka and Paul Diamond involved in a fued with the "Destruction Crew" featuring Wayne "The Train" Bloom, and "Mean" Mike Enos! Bad Company's manager was DDP!
This looks like AWA, Rude and Manny with Paul Jones vs. Hawk and Animal w/Ellering. A regional battle, but both these teams were AWA champs. I could be wrong. By watching this am am wrong a little, but both these teams were AWA tag champs.
