After all the safety improvements over the last 20 years incidents like this remain one of the few major dangers to drivers - impacts to the helmet. Senna I believe died of the same thing, albeit in different circumstances - when his car hit the wall at Imola in '94, the right front wheel popped up from between his car and the barrier and hit him in the head....

That was a large tire with a lot of mass that bounced onto somebodys head that was going in a different direction at a high rate of speed. The helmet failed.
