One doesn't usually get to hear the sound as it's really experienced.
The only launch I have witnessed was STS-1, Columbia, from the gate of Canaveral Air Force Station, over 12 miles away, I believe. Even from that distance, the low frequency booming could still be heard, and much more, felt.
