well, basicly how slapping is perfomed (this is what my music teacher tells me, and hes a funk player, an amazing idol for me O_O), you need to hit the start of the fretboard with the boney, left sidepart of your thumb, in an angle allmost equal to the string, so your thumb lines up with the string. eventually your thumb and wrist will get stronger, and there u go, slapping (:.

Yeah that's about it, try get some higher tension strings and lower your action, it'll help alot. It'll also help and be more comfortable if you have space just before the neck, if you have a pickup there it'll be quite hard.

@manatopain actually one does not need to to line up his thumb with the string. When I play slapping, I try to keep my thumb perpendicularly to the strings. Its more convinient in standing position when your bass is lower. There is actually no proper way of doing that. Everyone does it the way that is the most sutable for him.

I would go for a J-bass in my opinion, much brighter tone. P-basses are just okay for slapping, but more for a deeper tone.

yea i have a Lakland P-bass (higher quality then fender but otherwise same concept) it slaps with a very dark tone, it actually works to slap in metal lol...however if you're interested into playing funk like this a jazz bass will be the one...but in the end it all matters what feels best to you, most basses can do everything

a j-bass is good if you have the money. and amp wise i like gallien krueger. check them both out, also just play around with your different bass/amp combos and see what you like.

I reccomend a fender squire if you're only looking to spend about $100, but if you want to spend more, there are a lot of options. I have an Ibenez Soundgear 5 string, which goes for about $250 used, the way I got it. I love that thing, looks hot and plays hot. The best reccomendation I can give is to get a 5 string IF YOU CAN. Don't make it a major thing. If you end up choosing between a 4 and 5 stringer, remember that the extra string is worth about 15-20% of the origninal thing IMO.

Ibanez has some pretty mean basses for good prices. ibanez atk 300 is only 500 bucks and has a a lot of nice tones you can get from it.  plus the ibanez gsr 200, which i recently bought has a great slap tone, and i got it for 200 bucks in great condition.
