  • Yes.

  • damn i wish that were me jamming out in there

  • Cherbourg runs deep.

  • a musica e so uma consecuencia doque e ter intimidade com instrumentos e ter um do para a musica

  • So many icecream trucks...

  • i really love the way sings the line "it's been a long time [...]" differently in this song... so we got Nantes here...

then it's "Sunday Morning...", reminding me of Sunday Smile...

i was thinking... is this like a song to sum up the album? or just coincidence?

  • @deadeye003 "a long way down" -caroseles

    "seize the way" -the penalty

    yup i noticed that too

  • @deadeye003 yeaaaahhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i love this song because of the same thing!!!!!!! hahaha, i've got the album and i listen to it everyday, and nantes, a sunday smile and cherbourg are on the same album... i like listening to an album because it's like a story, like a book that you can just listen to it and close your eyes, and fly like a free bird (H)

  • Beirut - Soundtrack of my life!

  • i love beirut, but zach shits the bed in the beginning of the "i will lead the way" part

  • wooo i have a house outside cherbourg :)

  • @Halileet IT MEANS THE CHILDREN ARE THE ONES WHO ARE GOING TO BE RULING THIS WORLD WHEN YOU ARE OLD AND SICK, TEACH THEM TO BE SOPHISTICATED INDIVIDUALS OR YOU SHALL BE RULED BY WALKING MORONS; as if that's not already happening. lol

  • Ho my god!... I'm from Cherbourg!!!

  • @Halileet well, perhaps they might have wanted to show this, but this message is for the driver behind that truck to do not run, and avoid accidents. I guess..

  • I'm really craving ice cream, I'm not sure why.

  • @mango80nectar Do you hear any Brass Instruments and Percussion at Amelie?

  • the names is wrong the name is.St. Apollonia

  • @canikero Nah, this is definitely "Cherbourg"

  • @canikero People have problems with the names of some beruit songs because some of the downloads had the wrong names on the songs.

    This is Cherbourg.

  • magnifique...

  • Wonderful. Long Live Beirut!

    Come back to Brazil, Beirut.

    Thanks.

  • It is my life's mission to marry this man. :P

  • @RedFlounderFish haha not if i get to him first :)

  • Fuck genres, fuck labels. Just close your eyes, (even tho Beirut always have awesome videos) and let the music take you where it wants you to go. This is music with a mission!

  • lol rotary valve flugelhorn

  • What intrument is the singer playing?

  • @170Pages Fluglehorn... fluglehorn is to trumpet as bass sax is to tenor sax more or less

  • I cry

  • woah this amazing i wish they would ad more wood winds like a basoon or something crazy like that

  • He is blessed with a wonderful voice :D. As soon as I started listening to Beirut, I was captivated by the instrument :)

  • He is blessed with a wonderful voice :D.

  • it has some of the lyrics from "nantes", doesn't it? lol

  • funny :)

  • I like the band so much! And all the songs are great ;)

  • What instrument does the singer dude play?

  • @tmg331 A trumpet.

  • @katissoradlike woah hes holding it differently so i thought it might be something else

  • @tmg331 it is called a Rotary valve Flugelhorn. It is...like a trumpet, but better

  • @kaiserschon Lol, that's awesome. My boyfriend will kill me for not knowing that. XD

  • @kaiserschon kay thanks

  • Ronaldo

  • Cool, it's the Kool man depot in Billyburg non?

  • There's a difference when a music bops your head, and when a music moves you inside and leave you completely motionless in awe. Few have done the second option, Beirut did it flawlessly.

  • I really like this Illyrian folk influence. I do hope they can cut better video for this piece. He should add a balalaika part to this one though.

  • SO BRILLIANT (Y)

  • fuck genres. just a bunch of elitists trying to label shit. music is different. get over it.

  • This guy simply rocks! incredible... recording in the most unexpected place for doing a video alive... just wow.

  • I hope this band can inspire people to use instruments other than guitar/bass/drums :P

  • Perfeito!!! *-*

  • omg can't say how much I love this song. I have goosebumbs when I hear it :o

Please pleas please please come to belgium Beirut.

And oh make a new album please :)

    Peace :D

  • isint this nantes??

  • nope nope! This is Definitely Cherbourg. Check out the lyrics between the two.

They do both have the "It's been a long time since I've seen you smile" line though.

  • @DrownedinDreams Yeah. It gets confusing sometimes because some of the songs share a similar intro either in lyrics, rhythm, or melody. Like Sunday Smile, Elephant Gun, Cherbourg, and Nantes all mention a smile in them.

  • hasnt anybody noticed that this is st. apollonia on the flying club cup? not cherbourg.

  • bobody but you, and you are wrong though....

  • @supertarts No man. That is Cherbourg. Keep in mind that St. Appollonia has this special begin with the Ukulele and the "These saints...They move with us" singing.

This version is way better than the version on the album, especially because of the Glockenspiel.

  • Im guessing you downloaded the album.. because my roommate torrented it and all the track names were wrong

  • I think that's what happens when you download it.

  • yeeahh!!!

  • Hooray for multi-talented musicians! It's great that he plays that horn (I have no idea what kind). It seems that playing instruments as well as singing adds more dimension to the music--it just increases that artist's credibility as someone who understands the patterns of music.

  • @doodlehh It's an Flugelhorn with rotary valves. It has a brighter, softer sound than a trumpet. It's not a typical Balkan Brass instrument(They use cornets) but it suit the voice of Zach at the best.

  • I enjoy songs from every "genre" of music .I love all kinds.... it doesn't matter. Music is a way for me to connect to the human condition and relate to others' thoughts and feelings about things and I take full advantage of that:) everyone is entitled to their opinion and taste but it is great to just sit back and enjoy it. I find music itself beautiful so I open myself up to the possibility of being able to enjoy just about anything:) I Love Beirut! and Lupe Fiasco....it's not so hard:)

  • That's so deep. This is all so deep. You know the 12 ft end of the pool? That's really deep. I've heard that you can get stuck in the little drain at the bottom if you go too deep. Wow.

  • im so scared - i never want to swim again

guys - really - this is sersious - i mean - i know all those chian comments are bull - but this is like real, im never swimming again

  • @monkifresh that is exacltly what my phd reserach is about. haha. Music and human connection. Just started so didn't do studys yet.....

    I love beirut.

  • @monkifresh Nicley said ^^

  • @monkifresh Amen! :)

  • @monkifresh How about slipknot? ;)

  • @monkifresh Most wonderfully articulated explanation about the way I, myself, feel about loving a variety of different artists, sounds, and genres I have ever heard. Wonderful.

  • @monkifresh I'm not the only one who likes both of them? What?

  • Comment removed

  • no no there definately are genres of music.. im pretty sure jazz isnt a style of clothing and neither is folk. i know your comment was supposed to be all deep and brooding but totally the wrong video to put it on. post that on a rap vid

  • Wow this is embarassing lol I posted on the wrong vid :O

  • the flugelhorn sounds amazing in this song! like melted butter :]

  • Youtube debates iz srs bzns guys

  • All these videos end with him walking off

  • This is such a lovely peaceful song. I wish I lived in a world where people didn't argue about Rock vs Hip Hop in the comments below this.

  • @ArbitraryImposition 100% talent is talent, and true talent is when people have actually instruments and can sing, and have lyrics that actually mean something!! HARD to find these days!!

  • @ArbitraryImposition ive gotten into a habit of not looking past the highest rated comments because i'm tired of people arguing and bickering, or trying to get thumbs up.

  • you guys can say there is not "fact" and "art has no bounds" or whatever broad image you want to paint but plain and simple hip-hop is one-dimentional. At a live hip-hop show its usually one artist doning one thing with pre-recorded beats, while at a rock show, there are far more dimentions of music such as guitar, bass, and drums. yes of course beats are made from various instruments, but most of them are not mixed in sync unlike rock music. theres more talent on stage at a rock show than hiphop

  • i just kind of skimmed this ongoing argument... in my humble opinion what matters is that people always manage to find music that speaks to them and if they really love the music then no one can take that away from them even if it's talentless and inane... i hate hip hop but i dont think people who love it have any less passion or right to love music than i do for music like this

  • man, I don't give a shit about what people like or dislike. its just everyone nose is so far up their own ass that they can't handle the fact that there is more individual talent in bands than one rapper. Like that faggot quoting oscar wilde and that loser talking about "dimentions of art".....

  • im completely with you but no need to get personal... everyones gonna think the music they listen to is the most artful and requires the most talent cant be helped

  • vague quote of the day:

"art is in itself meaningless" Me quoting Oscar Wilde

  • Love Beirut, but I just get the impression Zach Condon would be a bit up himself in person.

  • Beirut makes me smile :)

  • I don't know why but listening to this song right after Nantes makes it seem like one big song.

  • hint. both songs: "It's been a long time since ive seen you smile"

  • I know right?! I didn't notice that until the other day!

  • That's because they have the same lyrics :).

  • This is great!

  • Love the song

    Love the video

    :)

  • this makes hip-hop a talent-less genre.

  • and why is that? i love hip hop and i also love this! why do u have to think of music as a competition and why can't u respect all genres as they are all music and just because u mite not like one type doesn't mean its talentless so please enjoy this brilliant music as i have and don't listen to hip hop if it isn't your cup of tea! just dont insult another art! thank you

  • if you think Soulja Boy and Gucci Mane is "art", you are sadly mistaken...its just words that rhyme and some dude pressing buttons for a beat...other genres require actual musical talent like drums, guitar and bass....I guess you can call it art, but to me its talent-less art.

  • souljah boy and gucci mane is not art nor is it hip hop, its sum talentless piece of shit that was invented by the music industry and 12yr old ignorant kids! i agree i h8 dem i h8 lil wayne flo rida etc! but to me they are not hip hop! hip hop to me is rakim, masta ace, krs one, tupac, eminem, nas, brother ali, immortal tech, mos def etc! these are poetic genius's! if u actually listened to real hip hop and not whats on the radio then maybe u might agree! and yes it is an art and full of talent

  • alt hip-hop such as atmosphere, sage francis, arested development, etc. could consider more talent, but compared to other genres, it considers less talent, yeah its poetry in motion, but compared to this for example, there is more talent required, all hip hop has is poetry, thats it.

  • y is that considered more talented? because U like that type of music, and atmosphere give a more mellow style of hip hop! i prefer to listen to rakim etc but plz y do u have to diss hip hop?

u like beirut, i respect that, i like this type of music, i dont like metal or acdc stuff like that but i respect what they do! y cant u respect what mc's do? yes beirut are extremely talented at what they do and iits a diff type of music so its got more emphasis on instruments! lyrics are good too but...

  • if you go to a hip-hop show, you see one dude, maybe a hype man, and pre-recorded background music. at a rock show you usually don't have pre-recorded music and play their instrument to make music in sync. It's just fact that rock music requires more talent.

hip-hop: MC, and producer, maybe DJ

rock: lead singer, bassist, guitarist, drummer, producer violenist, trumpet, etc. and it takes years of practice to play those instruments. any one can write a poem and find a beat.

  • hip hop emphasises more on its lyrical quality and its rhythm! and the best are extremely talented at what they do! luk at ur name! obama likes kfc(duno if dats racist or wat but anyway) lets say its a fact, well he mite like kfc and mite not like mcdonalds but it dusnt make mcdonalds and thats what your doing! just because u dont like hip hop ur saying it is less talented and that my friend is highly unfair!

i dont go around insultn other genres of music so what gives u da right?

  • I have the right to insult whatever the fuck I want. Your emphasis on Hip-hop being art is far from reality. the word are has lost its meaning in this day of age, a man can take a dump on the street and call it art. and the other note lyrical quality and rhythm is all it has, other genres such as rock have the same quality of lyrical content as hip hop, but they require more talent with instruments, most hip-hop artist are one-dimentional in their talents, which is lyrical content.

  • @Jdizzler14 As a lover of all genres of music, I'm gonna try and settle this immature and pointless argument.

Rap requires non-traditional lyrical talent. Hip-Hop artists USUALLY don't write their own lyrics but many have to have a decent voice. Some even play what ObamaLikesKFC may call "actual instruments" during recordings and live shows. Hip-Hop has as many sub-genres as rock (e.g. breakbeat and grime). Now rock music having better creativity and talent with instruments depends on what sub

  • @thatguy176 sub-genre you're talking about. 3oh!3 could classify as a type of rock band and do you see them up on stage playing tons of instruments? Both of you should at least research musical sub-genres so you have a decent idea of what you're talking about before you criticize an entire genre of music. and Jdizzler14 is right about respecting other genres and sub-genres of music even if you don't like them. And don't drag me into this because you'll look like a tard arguing with me about

  • @thatguy176 Genres and sub-genres of music because music is truly my passion and I at least have a firm grasp on what music is what. Example: ObamaLikesKFC was talking about hip-hop but criticism he stated was more fit for criticizing mainstream rap (which is a VERY different sub-genre).

  • @thatguy176 you didnt really end the argument...pretty sure the last time either of us commented was months ago.

  • @ObamaLikesKFC

To be perfectly honest, there is a lot of non mainstream hip hop that is completely worthy of the "art" category.

    Try gorillaz for instance.

  • gorillaz is mainstream...and these days anything can catigorize as "art". I can write your name when I piss and I bet that would be considered art. The "art' category today means nothing because any one can jumble words together, call it a poem, and put it on a beat.

  • Well art is mainly subjective...maybe you should make up a new title for yourself so you can classify whatever it is that you feel is art. Now I don't like a lot of mainstream either, but denouncing a whole genre that happens to be screwed up via radio seems a little silly.

I can see your frustration but there is still a lot good music--it's just getting increasingly difficult to come by.

  • my point isn't even about whats mainstream or whats not. My point is that all hip hop requires less talent than rock music. now your view of what hip hop and rock is may vary, but the bottom line is "rock" music requires more talent than "hip-hop". and thats fact.

  • I'll kindly disagree.

I just don't believe you can tipify an entire genre like that.

  • it's not an opinion. it's fact

  • to make a good hip hop song takes far more talent than to make an average rock song... i think there are good hip hop artists and bad ones, just as there are good rock bands and bad ones. there are so many different styles of music and i believe it to be a good thing... diversity.

and beirut aren't a rock band, obviously.

    anyway i love them :)

  • @ObamaLikesKFC talent can't be scientifically measured so there's no way that's a fact....

a person can play only 3 chords can call that rock music. compare that to... idk someone who's really talented in hip hop (I don't really liket that genre so i don't know) and you're point seems kind of silly

  • What a pitiful attempt to instrumentalize "facts" to enhance your opinion. Refering to "facts", you always have to tell the source, the empirica background, and all possible logical flaws related to the "fact". By failing to do so, your "fact" is nothing more than a personal opinion, yet even worse, you're trying to manipulate others by calling your personal opinion a "fact".

Your post is full of stupid, which is a fact, which is my personal opinion. See what I did there?

  • you are correct bro.

  • genres are broad and stupid, make your own opinions rather than base them off of what's 'mainstream'

  • gorillaz is mainstream.

  • oh theres a comment war goin down. down there. ha

  • the greatest

  • wonderful..:)

still love his voice the most!

  • FAN

    TAS

    TIC!

  • great song - 5*

  • Maravilhoso................

    ;o)

  • Always brings me back to Coachella. Fucking amazing.

  • cool

  • sir Condon please marry me!!! he´s a genius...and sooo cute ^^ [this is a dream of some indie girls and gay boys! a dream..i said! xD]

  • True! I'm like "why can't I meet a guy like this?" hehe

  • Rad. In reference to the convo reguarding pop music and things. I think that there are some very useful things to take away from pop in general: certain rythms, bouncy melidies, catchy basslines. In my own music I like using these things somewhat tongue in cheek at times and it works well for me.

Artists like Beirut are not really catchy, they are more like a high quality aged liquor. A connoisseur will appreciate the depth and complexity, but a majority of people will spit it out.

  • haha i love your comment

  • jajaja. es verdad. tienes toda la razon.

  • Well said sir!

  • I totaly agree!

  • typical elitist argument.

"if you don't like it, you just don't get it."

pretty funny to see all the ego perpetuation that followed, for the sake of the general public you should keep comments like that between you and your left hand, preferably in the privacy of your own home

  • Another splendid example of how the medieval church has done a splendid job at destroying Pride and life itself. If you don't get it, look harder, have the will, the courage to challenge your own beliefs and landlocked concepts, unless you prefer the endless slumber of ignorance that is.

As for the General public, I quote Sartre "Hell is other people", and oh how damn right he was.

  • i take it this is your submission for the "youtube's most pretentious comment" award. you even quoted sartre. i can't believe what i'm reading.

and again, you come at me when "you just don't get it," attacking my tastes to defend your argument when i never revealed my opinion toward beirut in the first place. i was at this video after all, wasn't i?

but no, you've provided another splendid example of what can happen when a spoiled kid is never taught to keep his ego in check, ttyl nerd

  • I don't know if you intentionally dragged me into the little argument you were having with someone else, but i think my comment was fairly evenhanded. The intent of my comment was to point out that acts like Beirut are only going to appeal to certain people, I don't remember faulting anyone for not liking it.

  • I haven't done any reading into this argument in the least bit, and I don't plan on taking part in it, but I would like to mention that I am glad someone designated left hand as opposed to right hand. I happen to be a "righty" who uses the left, and it's good to know I'm not alone!

  • @Lymmar - great analogy.

  • love em =)

  • Beirutはナチだ

  • what a truly great band. I love it.

  • Austin, Texas NOW!!!!!!!

  • MTV is a tool used to brainwash young teenagers with terrible music by producers that want them to listen to terrible music. Producers sign terrible artists that have catchy lyrics because it sticks, that's what they want. They'll never sign Beirut because Beirut is too good to be aired with horrible singers like Avril Lavigne, Nickleback, and Lil Wayne.

    Go Beirut!

  • thats true most of the time. there were a few bands back in the day like nirvana and the smashing pumpkins that were not brainwashing people. but nowadays i tottally agree with you

  • Well I don't mean to sound like there's collusion going on. Mainstream music has usually been pretty terrible save for the 5% of bands / artists that break through the mold (Nirvana was a good example). For those that don't.. though, like Lil Wayne, Akon, Chris Brown, Kayne West, to The Jonas Brothers, Fallout Boy, The All American Rejects, and their flocks of copy-cat bands just make MTV the single most annoying channel on television. I know I'm hating, but if you understood, you'd understand.

  • i completely understand your opinion. your right most bands nowadays on mtv suck. but all i'm saying is there are few good ones. i'm glad theres bands like beirut, fleet foxes, shins, animal collective, bon iver, grizzly bear and band of horses to make up for all the shit. they should be the ones on mtv

  • kanye was good until he started using auto tune, lyrics are still pretty dynamite though

  • Amen brother.

  • this is what I call good music
