I am not a drummer, nor am I a bass player. I am just someone who loves music of all types, and have been exploring my "musicality" for the past few years. What I just saw starting at 2:10 of this viedo is perhaps one of the coolest things I have ever seen musically! Krupa was amazing!
Simple and complicated at the same time. The clarity on every beat and the sense of touch of Gene (I mean can you differentiate fingers from drumsticks?) were amazing in my opinion his best assets. I was pretty much influenced by far more modern drummers (prog rock, fusion, metal), but when I discovered Krupa and the other older drummers from the swing era, I realized how much influential they were in todays drumming. It is simply amazing that this happened so many years ago.
Fabulous. When I was very young (67-68) my mum used to tell me that my Grandpa was a huge Gene Krupa fan way back in the 40's & 50's, and used to play drums in a jazz/dance band. The irony is, he probably never saw this, just knew the old records that gene was on.
this is so awesome. krupa and the man playing the bass are just having so much fun going back and forth like that, just looking at each other like, "hey man look what i can do."
I just played a Christmas concert with 40's music. I am familar with the music, but I never played it. I have the utmost respect for the drummers during this era. It's a bit more of a challenge that I actually thought. I want to learn/play more.
Let's not get get too excited. The original (excellent) version of this was by Ray Bauduc and Bob Haggart with Bob Crosby's Bobcats, long before this and GK certainly was not the first drummer to record with a bass drum. Bass drums were used in jazz before GK was born (in 1909); they were not used in recordings at first because of the inferior equipment. Anyway, who wants to hear a bass drum going 4 to the bar? Kills swing stone dead. Jon Stone
Jazz wasn't recorded untill 1917, and Tony Spargo hits a bass drum on those early recordings, so no bass drum in 1909....jeez some people are sooooo dumb.
@jonthejazz1 You may be right, but who would know if you are? Krupa is widely credited with being the first to use bass drum in a recording session, which involved persuading the recording engineer to let him do so.
Wow! Gene Krupa was not only a phenomenal drummer, he was a fantastic person with a heart of gold! And, no, Benny Moten wasn't rushing his bass, those two locked like crazy!
I did not realise there was actual footage of Gene Krupa, seen him in films always some acting him, the wonder of Youtube and the net is fantastic, this is 1st class, thanks for this post, thumbs up

@augusthour4 I want you to see you play them. I really don't know why people always hate on travis. He is creative when he plays drums. It isn't usually the simple one two drum beat.
The bit where he plays the bass strings with the drumsticks was later used to great effect by The Ventures starting in the early sixties, all the way up until drummer Mel Taylor died. They always closed the show with Caravan, including a hefty drum solo....
Why are we discussing Travis Barker (a good drummer) on a Gene Krupa video (also a good drummer)? It'd be like talking about Keith Moon on a Buddy Rich video, pointless.
@iamsteveyg09 Travis Barker to drum video like Justine Bieber to music video. There are not that bad but highly praise by their fan and others think they are just overrate?
@iamsteveyg09 Same reason Justin Bieber has to appear in the comments section of every AC/DC video: idiots in this country are given unrestricted access to the internet.
Travis Barker is a good drummer so stop the hate. I bet most of you can't even play drums or as good a Travis. This drummer is also good but a complete different style. You can't compare two drummers that are complete different style. It just doesn't work. So stop the bitching.
"He invented the tunable tom, he told zildjan to make thinner symbols, the first man to record using a bass drum, the man who made drums a solo instrument- Gene Krupa." and told Chuck Norris to do martial arts and leave the drumming to him!!!
Man Gene could really swing, Beautiful dynamics and touch. He could make simple things sounds so great and have so much presence. Why play anything else. It's really true artistry. PS - How great does his 1963 Bob Grauso Fibes snare drum (made to look like a white marine pearl Slingerland snare drum) sound.
"he is the only person i know who can play a drum solo on a stand up bass. "
Actually, the dum sticks on the double bass thing comes from another drummer, the great Ray Bauduc - a fantastic drummer who has been nearly forgotten about. Google for 'The Bobcats' and be amazed :-)
PS. I love Gen'es playing on here - really musical, so much better than the vids where he's being made to but heads with Buddy Rich.
He invented the tunable tom, he told zildjan to make thinner symbols, the first man to record using a bass drum, the man who made drums a solo instrument- Gene Krupa.
Gene Krupa made it cool to be a drummer. Charisma, Looks, Talent, and presence.
He looked so much at home behind the kit he seemed like part of the set-up. I could imagine that when he walked off stage the drums followed him by themselves.Yes there where, are, good drummers, but are they as handsome
This is recorded at the London House in Chicago in 1959 with Krupa on drums, Jim Gannon (bass), Ronnie Ball (piano,) and Eddie Wasserman (tenor sax)...... Recording mics wer right there on stage giving us the listeners the true sensation that we are standing next to Gene as he plays his solos on drums then on the strings of Gannon;s bass fiddle..... Like it........?
@MrUSandA This is from dial m for music 1967 with Benny Moten bass, Eddie Shu sax, Hal Mckinny piano.....not the london house not 1959 and not that group.
has anyone got caravan from the same session, is it Eddie hughe? he plays mouth organ and gene just flows so beautifully. one of the nicest gene trio tunes.
@rainbowsalads "Caravan" from this session is on the same DVD as this selection "Gene Krupa: Jazz Legend". Eddue Shue does the harmonica part.....a really hauntingly beautiful piece. Unfortunately, Steve Allen's voice-over narration takes away from some of this music. None the less, it's definately worth buying the DVD.
@stalzz Hold on - If you're talking about a show off, Gene was the master show off or should I say showman. But isn't that what a showman is? a show off? Buddy liked to use his speed. Gene didn't have Buddy's speed and technique, but has him beat with style and showmanship. Gene was also a lot better looking than Buddy. Gene was the first one to bring attention to the drummer. - just my 2cents....
The problem with Buddy was that he was always about speed speed and more speed. If you go to fast, at some point the drums stop singing. As Buddy himself once said, "Gene Krupa is the beginning and the end of all jazz drummers"
@killaXbass omg ur so stupid thats the whole point of what i said, and i didnt copy im quoting a lyric from a SHT's song. please, dont reply anymore comments. peace
Love Gene Krupa! He wasn't the fastest or the most technically skilled, but he was In The Groove with the music so much. He was music. I imagine everybody in the band he played with were getting inspired by him.
I play the saxophone. This is a serious question: I enjoy jazz drummers like Roach, Krupa, and Elvin Jones and on every video in the comment section there's some barker bashing, is he the Kenny G of the drums?
@gotmeagrape define what you mean by the "Kenny G of drums" but that guy who is posting all of the comments is just an idiot he has like 4 accounts and will never stop just ignore him
@swingisthething94 basically, kenny g is probably a less than mediocre saxophonist ON A GOOD DAY when compared to the standards set by those before him but he still manages to make a profit from selling records and is popular to people that don't know anyone else to compare him to. I was thinking Travis Barker was the same (mediocre and popular) by judging the comments
there was another song with eddie shu & gene..where eddie plays harmonica and sax , was it the song "caravan"? so well played its on an old gene vhs., but i no longer have a video player : (
I've commented before - but I just love this set so much! Yes, Rich was faster and had incredible technique. But Gene just has it all over him in the musical elements.
I listened to a Ginger Baker solo before coming here ... it was OK, but, sorry, just no comparison.
My dad used to whistle this song to me thru his teeth while accompanying himself on the upright Bass, I think I was about 8 or 9 years old when I would pester him to interupt his practice and play it for me, 'til he would finally give in with a sigh, shaking his head in disbelief at the weird little boy grinning back at him with glee.
damnnn!!! i was hoping to find a vid of gene krupa without the stupid dumbass comment about travis barker......gene krupa and the likes are at a far far far higher level than barker you are trying to compare when there is no comparison...barker is a 3rd rate drummer listened to by 3rd rate idiots..and i suppose your dad was tougher than my dad? lmfao....if you think barker is better then no matter what anyone says you are wayyyyy too stupid to understand or appreciate the likes of krupa
MarkR1957 is a troll, don't know why yall are giving him so many upvotes. Some one who tries to differentiate between "hip-hop" and "rap" obviously has no idea what they are talking about. And combining "hip-hop and rap" with "other junk" just shows you onboard with the fucking GRANNYS dude. WAKE UP.
It's 2010. Let's resurrect this wonderful music in the spirit of what it WAS and transform it into something FRESH. However, without the knowledge of what IS (MarkR) we'll never move forward.
@WindyCityJazz well obviously there is no video of him playing jazz because his job is to play punk rock and hip hop, but i do know that he was in the jazz ensemble at his high school and apparently his drum instructor was a jazz drummer.
@butlerbulldogs05 Being in a high school jazz band doesn't mean anything. High school jazz band is absolutely nothing compared to playing jazz as a professional. The drummer in my high school's jazz band could only play a half-ass swing feel and knew nothing about supporting the soloist, the two most important jobs of a jazz drummer. Maybe his teacher was a jazz drummer, but that still doesn't mean that he knows how to play jazz and do it well.
Oh MarkR,, when will you just keep your overly opinionated thoughts to yourself and off youtube, because certainly it has caused nothing but controversy.
Even Krupa was was a pot head ! Junkies and thugs were just as prevalent. The public was still in the dark, though. Try just appreciating what's B4 you, now, on this footage.
If anyone has the documentary this video is from that also has 'Caravan' on it, would you please post it. I love Krupa's version and I can't find it anywhere.
I can watch this vid time and time again, and still marvel at Gene's superb timing, particularaly the interaction with the bass player. And that short drum solo....Buddy Rich once said that a drum solo should be like a horn solo, it should have a beginning, a middle and an end, and Krupa's work here fits that description to a "T". Gene's memory and legend will live on long after todays flashes in the pand are long gone.....
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
lol at that dude hiting that big giutar with the fucking sticks i would ahave kicked his ass if he did that to my giutar id like to see travis sckool this dude on the drum set
@TRAVISBLINK4EVER .... :-) hahahahah.................I really needed your joke today....hahhahah the, the bass...a big guitar?!?!? hahahahah (and notice how you spelled "guitar"...classic ...ha ha haa) And, and "schooling" Krupa, the man who actually developed the drum kit as we know it today, and was the first to bring a full drum kit into a recording studio ?!?!? ha ha hahhhhhh....your travistard isn't fit to scrape the dog crap from the bottom of Krupa's shoes!! Travis ?? hahahahahaaa
@brandashusband I see the Travis Barker post is reeling it's ugly head again. If they love Travis Barker so much why don't they go wank off to his videos and leave the lovers of real drummers and musicians alone.
thx for posting this, mold. go gene go. this is a great example of a master at work. organic playing, showmanship and playing that set with total control and confidence. he is playing those drums not hitting them and they are singing back to him with approval.
@BLINK2BARKER What is your main purpose, idiot? People like you should kill themselves. You know rectalhead, they don't hardly make 'em like you any more - but just to be on the safe side, you should be castrated anyway.
@BLINK2BARKER Dear sir,Gene Krupa originated the high-hat,tune-able toms recording with a drum set with bass (kick) drum pedal, the drum "set-kit" as a solo instrument... the list goes on. I agree todays players are very talented, impressive, in TODAY'S music. Men like Krupa, Bellson(originated the double bass drum set) pioneered the things drummers take for granted today, like the great Les Paul pioneered the solid body electric guitar. Don't forget, young folks loved this stuff THEN.
That was the year I graduated high school; and I was a complete Krupa addict! Rich may have had more power and speed; but Krupa was more musical. I'd love to find all those old Verve albums on CD today; but it doesn't look good.
I actually was made to play this on our dble bass players bass during my solo in BIG NOISE we played this song evryday for 6 yrs and it became our signature peice
love paying this style of drums so much to improve and so much freedom

If there is a God he/she will digitally remaster this so I can hear Gene's great stick work on the stand up bass. This totally outdoes all the rest.

I play the saxophone. This is a serious question: I enjoy jazz drummers like Roach, Krupa, and Elvin Jones and on every video in the comment section there's some barker bashing, is he the Kenny G of the drums?
gotmeagrape 1 year ago
@gotmeagrape define what you mean by the "Kenny G of drums" but that guy who is posting all of the comments is just an idiot he has like 4 accounts and will never stop just ignore him
swingisthething94 1 year ago
@swingisthething94 basically, kenny g is probably a less than mediocre saxophonist ON A GOOD DAY when compared to the standards set by those before him but he still manages to make a profit from selling records and is popular to people that don't know anyone else to compare him to. I was thinking Travis Barker was the same (mediocre and popular) by judging the comments
gotmeagrape 1 year ago
@gotmeagrape It's just a natural reaction to the barker trolls her on the Tube. Buncha 4chan faggots prolly.

I've commented before - but I just love this set so much! Yes, Rich was faster and had incredible technique. But Gene just has it all over him in the musical elements.
I listened to a Ginger Baker solo before coming here ... it was OK, but, sorry, just no comparison.
HickysBoy 1 year ago
My dad used to whistle this song to me thru his teeth while accompanying himself on the upright Bass, I think I was about 8 or 9 years old when I would pester him to interupt his practice and play it for me, 'til he would finally give in with a sigh, shaking his head in disbelief at the weird little boy grinning back at him with glee.

I was in the band in high school and this was a number that was used as the drum solo portion of one of our field shows. Love love love it!

damnnn!!! i was hoping to find a vid of gene krupa without the stupid dumbass comment about travis barker......gene krupa and the likes are at a far far far higher level than barker you are trying to compare when there is no comparison...barker is a 3rd rate drummer listened to by 3rd rate idiots..and i suppose your dad was tougher than my dad? lmfao....if you think barker is better then no matter what anyone says you are wayyyyy too stupid to understand or appreciate the likes of krupa
oddjobjujitsu 1 year ago
buddy rich was faster and more powerful, but nobody beats krupa in terms of sheer musicianship and creativity then or now.
knickerbocker191 1 year ago
MarkR1957 is a troll, don't know why yall are giving him so many upvotes. Some one who tries to differentiate between "hip-hop" and "rap" obviously has no idea what they are talking about. And combining "hip-hop and rap" with "other junk" just shows you onboard with the fucking GRANNYS dude. WAKE UP.
It's 2010. Let's resurrect this wonderful music in the spirit of what it WAS and transform it into something FRESH. However, without the knowledge of what IS (MarkR) we'll never move forward.

butlerbulldogs05 8 months ago
@butlerbulldogs05 Show me proof that he can play good jazz and I'll take it back.
WindyCityJazz 7 months ago
@WindyCityJazz well obviously there is no video of him playing jazz because his job is to play punk rock and hip hop, but i do know that he was in the jazz ensemble at his high school and apparently his drum instructor was a jazz drummer.
butlerbulldogs05 7 months ago
@butlerbulldogs05 Being in a high school jazz band doesn't mean anything. High school jazz band is absolutely nothing compared to playing jazz as a professional. The drummer in my high school's jazz band could only play a half-ass swing feel and knew nothing about supporting the soloist, the two most important jobs of a jazz drummer. Maybe his teacher was a jazz drummer, but that still doesn't mean that he knows how to play jazz and do it well.

Travis ?? hahahahahaaa

@brandashusband I see the Travis Barker post is reeling it's ugly head again. If they love Travis Barker so much why don't they go wank off to his videos and leave the lovers of real drummers and musicians alone.

williamson609 1 year ago
