usually I use the right side, cause it's thinner than the center, so it'll vibrate easily

The tighter your lips are the higher it goes. You can also hum through your mouth at the same time - this way is easier, but doesn't sound as good as controlling it with your lips.

Thinking about it braces could make this sound very hard as they'd get in the way of your lips, making it hard to tighten them up as much as you need
