Question for John: Since Vector Paint was removed in CS5, is there an equivalent tool that does the same thing? Or another method that you recommend for CS5 users?
Awesome video. Was wondering if someone could maybe give me some tips...Whenever I use a green screen, I sometimes get green fringes around the puppet. Is this just a lighting issue? Is there some tool that helps get rid of it? I use the Color Key effect in AfterEffects.
@meltingcastle You actually want to use KeyLight in After Effects. It will have a spill supressor built into it. The green edges are called spill and they are a result of being too close to the screen or having light bouncing of other objects in the scene back onto your puppet. There's a ton more info than this that you should understand when doing a Chroma-key scene. Look around you tube and you'll find some good tutorials.
@meltingcastle another thing to factor in is the focus of your camera and the image quality. if the image is a lower resolution, edging will be far from perfect
@animaxindustries I did make the doll. Unfortunitely the process is very complex and I wouldn't be able to describe it in this comment area or even a 15 minute video. I am in the process of writing a bunch of books and one of them is a how to make Small BJD Dolls. I may even have a limited run Build your own kits in the future. possible 50 kits. But I first have to get through this mountain of videos and magazine issues first. Plus a Doc in Production right now.
I've been experimenting with this type of compositing on an amateur level as well, and have found lighting to be the biggest issue. I would like to know MORE about the lights you use or what solutions you find.
@cartoonmarc It was difficult since the movement is so loose. I believe that can be fixed with more tension on the wire inside the puppet. But also in the construction of the joints. A ball and socket armature moves far better. But for the sake of experimenting, it was pretty successful.
Looking great! Some of the shots are more successful than others, but it sounds like you've got a handle on the whys and why nots. The subtlety in the animation itself is great! I think you are right...lighting will make a huge difference. Overall, though, awesome!

Wow! Great stuff. Thank you for answering my previous question a couple of months ago. New question: Did you make the doll, if so, how? Thanks.

looks like the doll wasn't quite perfect to animate?
