Mingus was hardly ignored during his lifetime... also, it's not as though he was playing popular music... glad to see this, had no idea Ray Davies did something of this nature...
Incredible hostility toward people who obviously greatly respect the man. You think maybe Elvis married Krall because he loves her and not based on whether she's authentic-jazz enough for you? You think Mingus - one of the greatest composers of the 20th c. IMHO - didn't go well beyond the jazz idiom by anyone's standards? I think that's what Declan means when he says "I don't think of it like jazz," meaning "not just jazz as we usually think of it." I love Mingus, but I loved Ray & Elvis first.
What the hell is Declan MacMannus doing here? What a pretentious prat! His involvement in the tribute album notwithstanding, his speaking here is really out of step. He has minimal knowledge of jazz: we knew that when he married Dianna Krall!
Have you taken a look at the lineup here for the tribute? There's lots of non jazzers starting with Ray Davies as director. As to Costello's appearance, it seemed to be Hal Willner's idea. I mean bloody Henry Rollins is part of it.
and your point is......so tell ,me, what is jazz to you for you to be so critical. Its just music and its not to be understood. once we understand it it will fall from existance....trust me. he has the right to be there as mush as anyone else. the fact you even called someone else pretentious is more than interesting.
when costello says about Mingus' work: "I don't think of it like jazz or anything" he pegs himself as an idiot.
i think it was a great record, but Costello is absolutely pretentious to pose as a spokesman for Mingus' music. He should have had some respect and passed the mic and camera on to some people with some knowledge.
The opener is "Meditation" from the tribute album, "Weird Nightmare," produced by Hal WIlner, which utilized Harry Partch instruments along with the usual ones... cool album, check it out --
Ray Davies of the Kinks? If so... egads man! I read his autobiography as a kid... before the best book ever, Mingus' own Beneath The Underdog. X-Ray was a really damn good book too though, and am glad to have an opportunity to see this video too. Oh yeah and thanks for Village Green, and all of it else too.

Yeah, it's strange they would pick Costello to talk about Mingus's work.

I hate Elvis Costello and the way he tries to leach his way into the jazz scene without paying his dues.

I think Herbie Hancock would have been a better fit.

@Whatisthescore you don't think he's paying his dues by being married to that other imitator?
