to anyone watching this video, if you like japanese shows(dramas) etc, i strongly recommend Orange Days.. it features sign language and is a very heartwarming story =)
Wow Japanese Sign Language is soooo different from American Sign Language. I am currently attending college majoring in ASL to become an interpreter and I love it, but I also have friends who are deaf so it is much easier for me SOMETIMES.. I wish you luck and don't give up! :)
haha I'm taking ASL (american sign language) but my boyfriend studies Japanese (spoken) so it made me curious about JSL. I don't know any Japanese so learning JSL would be a bit difficult but watching your video I had to comment because of what you said about how it's hard to practice by yourself. I feel the same way..which is why I'm procrastinating by reading about JSL instead of signing ASL. thanks for the videos it's interesting
hey youre doing good i go to school for american sign language (: this is so cool! i bet it is hard learning on your own , interaction is so important! i hope u find deaf friends good luck girl!(: -sunshine
wow, that's realy interesting...I almost completly understand the whole thing of what she signed languages. nice, and she's sooo beautiful, and I like her expression too. but one thing funny that makes me laugh and smile about her expression which was on 0:17 to 0:18, heheheehe! she's so cute!
your are beautiful ji-ji, my goal is to learn japanese fluently, but i also want to learn the alphjabets in diffierent lanauges, spanish, english, and japanese, so i could at least spell things out lol.
Wow, I find JSL amazing. I wasn't sure how it would look but it's really cool. I'm learning ASL to be an interpreter, and though I go to a class once a week, I have the same problem with not having anyone to talk to. From the looks of it you do it really well, and I noticed a few similarities between JSL and ASL. Have a nice day :)
JSL must be very hard to learn alone. You can see some cultural aspects in the expressions. In both languages, showing emotion in the face is important.
I've stumbled onto your videos because I now have to teach at a Japanese deaf school and it's hard for me not to be able to communicate with the students well... I understand how hard it is to learn a language by yourself with no one to talk to so I hope that by now you've found someone that you can converse easily with! Good luck!
Are you really trying to learn sign language by yourself? Thats great! I mean .. Its not difficult when your mom and dad is deaf but. Anyone im trying to learn it to. Just trying to make weird handmotions. I never seen anyone like talk so good sign language all by learning it themself. (without being deaf or having deaf parents) go CODAS!!
woah!!! it is great!! it is pretty different from spanish sign language too!! but it is cool !! ^_^ i'd love to learn it, but by the moment i'll learn the international system. please, continue learning JSL and making videos like this one!! =D
I'm in ASL one at my high school, and a sub came in today and showed us the Japanese sign for Konnichiwa.. I was like OMFG , because I'm also learning Japanese at home. So I want to learn Japanese Sign Language now!
My name is Christian! I think it´s cool to see you sign japanese sign language! I have been exchange students in Japan for a few years ago! And this fun with this here clip is I remember a lot of this japanese sign! :)
Okay, maybe I am stupid, but I really want to know if the signs are the same in all languages (except for the alphabet of course).. Seems to me we could have a universal language. :)
In Japanese and Chinese sign language, we tend to write out the characters more or sign them in their written shape etc 人(person, human) is a common example. while in ASL you would spell them out in ASL alphabets. :) it's really fun!!!
@bakaotaku you're not stupid, a lot of people are under the impression that all signed languages are universal but what they don't know is that signed languages, just like spoken languages, are highly influenced by the culture and history of the people so if Japanese people are different from American people in every other way like culture and spoken language, why shouldn't their signed languages be different too?
@bakaotaku There are hundreds of known sign languages throughout the world. I highly doubt we would be able to come up with one Universal one, although it would be cool. And this fact really makes me mad when I looked back on my earlier school years, they told us that Sign was universal =P
sign language is a language in itself, so to say that there should be a universal language is impossible. Signs are different in every country so a Deaf individual in America cannot just go to Japan and expect to be able to use American Sign Language and be understood. I hope that helped.

There is two or maybe more countries with the same or highly similar sign language, for example American Sign Language, being the most widely spread.
Despite strong differences in sign languages, deaf travelers are adept to communicate cross-culturally in international gatherings, thus making International Sign possible to emerge..
@bakaotaku All sign language use different signs, and dialects within different sign languages often use different signs as well. There's a certain amount of cross over, but they're generally not mutually intelligible.
@bakaotaku Every region/ country has their own sign language. and it's not a stupid question, I hear it all the time. I am a American Sign Language Interpreter and am fascinated by Japanese Sign Language.
@bakaotaku nope sign language is not universal (: Sorrry! There's British Sign language, American signlanguage (ASL) JApanese Signlanguage (here! haha) and sooo many more! Even deaf people need interpreters if they live the states!

this video is very interesting. I'm deaf and fluent in ASL. I am very curious to learn Japanese Sign Language. I was surprise that I saw some signs that are similar to ASL. I hope you could make more videos for basic sign language for people who are beginners.
I'm fluent in American Sign Language, after seeing this video, I'd LOVE to try my hand (pun?) at Japanese Sign Language. Wow. *Need to learn the Japanese alphabet, though. I noticed you fingerspelled quite a few things, and although I can guess that you f.s. "wine" or whatnot, I wouldn't be able to produce it myself. Darn!* GREAT video. Thank you for posting!! :)
I am learning Japanese Sign Language too... I was wondering if you have to know Japanese Language first to learn this? I thought it would be harder if you just went ahead learn signing first, am I right?
it is possible to learn JSL without learning Japanese. Deaf travelers to Japan often have learned JSL by interacting with their Japanese Deaf hosts, without learning Japanese or how to read Japanese characters. There are some deaf people who are fluent in JSL, but not so fluent in Japanese.
But in any formal learning situation, a JSL book always comes with explanations of grammar, semantics, etymology, etc.written in Japanese. That's a problem for a hearing foreigner, learning JSL.
That looked so cool! You're real good, it looks like your hands were just dancing in the air. Tho' I cannot say if it was correct or not; I don't know Japanese Sign Language (I'm just learning Finnish S.L.).
No, don't stop making these videos! I'm living in Japan and I've met some great deaf people and the videos have been very helpful for me to learn basic signs. Thanks!
WOW! Thank you for posting... Seeing the different signs and movements, it's beautiful. I use ASL and seeing the differences and similarities. You're doing a great thing please continue, when you can.
I am a deaf person and I know a several different sign language. I have a question about JSL. Which is best way to learn JSL? I am also studying japanese language basically before learning JSL.
hey you seem like someone who know what she's doing... can you tell me a way i could meet japanese people and thus learn some japanese online? I mean just to talk to japanese poeple

You look pretty, if you don't mind my saying so. I'm ASL user and know a bit of JSL. I think JSL is very pretty. A Japanese told me a poem about season via JSL. I fell in love. Btw, I'm crazy about sake. It's hard to find good sake here in America. Probably none? :( If I'm at Japan, I would drink sake everyday as long as I'm there. :D Why don't you meet Japanese deaf people?
please please continue making your video blog and even do shuwa! i really enjoy watching your blog and learn a bit shuwa ^0^ i would very much like to learn shuwa professionally but i cannot because im living in germany... zannen ne
thank you for the comment! Except I also did a lot of practice and NG like crazy :) It's the charm of editing. It's difficult to learn a sign language all by yourself with no one to practice with though.
hello... im isaac from singapore.. im deaf and know SEE (sign exact english) sign language... im very keen to learn the japanese sign language.. very interesting!!!!
I'm really glad you liked the video.. After receiving comments like these I seriously think I should start putting up sign language videos again..except I'm not very confident, I don't want to mis-use some signs! I'm totally self learned and there are minute details that sometimes I fail to notice until later.
What part in Japan are you living there? Where did you learn sign language? I think you are very active and appreciate of sign language..
May I have your email address for making friend? I will go to Korea this summer for my art show. I would like you go to Korea if it is easy for your trip.
Well, I'm almost at the end now, and yes there are some touching moments that almost bought a grown man to tears had it not been peppered throughout with some of the classic clichés, tricks and formulas mandatory in any jdorama plot, ie: the realisation of an event or emotion in the pouring rain, that said, I do love fromage frais.

Probably none? :( If I'm at Japan, I would drink sake everyday as long as I'm there. :D Why don't you meet Japanese deaf people?

I find this real interesting. I know ASL(American Sign Language), and I wish to learn Japanese sign language.
When you were signing I could recognize some of the signs, but some were completely foreign to me!
Keep up the good work!

Konnichiwa from Spore! :)
I'm a deaf girl and I see you have this comment from a deaf guy in Spore also so I guess you should know what mode of sign language I use.
Your sign language is quite good, though you are self-learnt. but your motivation is what most people like. :)
Hoping to learn a bit here and there in case I go Japan :)

thank you for the comment! Except I also did a lot of practice and NG like crazy :) It's the charm of editing. It's difficult to learn a sign language all by yourself with no one to practice with though.

I'm really glad you liked the video.. After receiving comments like these I seriously think I should start putting up sign language videos again..except I'm not very confident, I don't want to mis-use some signs! I'm totally self learned and there are minute details that sometimes I fail to notice until later.

Please keep up with your vlog, it's awesome! You have motivated me to watch 'Orange Days' again! :)

I think I should watch Orange Days again myself! Now that we know a bit of shuwa.. it might help to understand more! That drama was really touching.

I like your videos very much. I'm learning multiple languages as well. One of them is Nihongo. Anyway, take care!
