Maybe not necessarily too MUCH vibrato, but the vibrato was too wide about 75% of the time.
I would want some close to straight tones when playing this, personally. Of course, there might be a little bit of vibrato, but nothing too mega wide.
i actually love the vibrato most of the time but occasionally his intonation is covered due to its width. but id rather see people err on the side of more than less in this piece...
Oh, if you want to find out more about this cellist, the Harvard Crimson has a short biography and interview with him, and the Hanns Eisler website might also have some information.
On the contrary jazzonkim. This is the most passionate and lush version of this song I have found on youtube. The vibrate in my opinion is not at all too much its needed to bring out the true emotion of the piece. This interpretation has made me fall in love with this Elegy once again.
Playing a wide vibrato takes skill, seriously! This guy is doing his own interpretation of the piece

Do I hear an unusual silver-y tone in this find playing. I mean not the usual cello I am used to.

When I saw him perform live, his avoidance of any "showiness" impressed me; he is a sincere and honest musician, I think.

I disagree mjwynee01.
I believe that he truly is over-exerting his vibrato in the beginning. It is well played, and I think that his tone quality is great.
