I have the feeling that Ritchie´s playing is always a bit too low in volume against all the other instruments. Well, it may be that as a great professional he is, he always will balance his own volume so that all the others in the band get well heard too, but at times I miss a bit more of an edge. Most of the time I really have to listen very carefully in order to "find" him in the rest of the music that the other guys are playing.
This is all about wild aggression and showmanship. He’s obviously not trying to be that musical. When Blackmore wants to melt your heart with musicality he can certainly do so.

One of my dreams is to be like this man, one day. The people who say he plays sloppy, well when your live you can go fucking crazy! Did Jimi Hendrix, and Jimi Page not? Ritchie can make the stage his, he has more talent than any guitarist I know, he's notorious for what he does off stage, but what he does on stage is legendary. I loved him in Deep Purple, I loved him in Rainbow, and I love him in Blackmores Night, the mans a genius his riffs are legendary, and his live performance unmatched.
I'm sure he was great and innovative in his time, but I haven't seen anything by him that is really that great. It's mainly just loud slop that meanders nowhere.

I will tell you all truthfully, I love Ritchie. I am most likely one of his all time biggest fans. Also I have seen and heard him do some amazing things.... But this wasn't one of them. Ritchie is one of those guys that plays great when he's inspired, but when he's not...well this video is proof. I'm suprised that he stayed with Purple as long as he did the 2nd time around. His inability to get along with the guys always caused him to play poorly cause he would become agitated and introverted.

He is the greatest ever. But his solo spots always were propositaly noisy. He plays godly the whole show, but he really likes to make noise and crash guitars on his solo spot. It,s more a visuall and theatrical kind of thing than musical - he delivers more musicianship during the concert than anyother guitarist in the world, except at this part of show. Ritchie is god!
@rebb61 Absolutely! And for many people, geniouses are hard to undertand. Many think that clean scales and so is the only way to play. Ritchie often combines this with rough structure and so on. I saw Steve Morse in concert with DP. He is amazing in his own right, but he (and the other before him that worked shortly in DP) doesn`t fit in the band. I feel it is way to clean and it would fit better in other styles. Ritchie, Jimi H and Neil Y has the dirty and sometimes a "sweetness" in the play.
I think the problem here is the sound. Not his playing. The sound here is really bad. The notes are not clear because of his bad guitarsound, I 've heard him play with a better sound on other videos than here! His solo of "Child in Time" where he played for the last time with DP is really better. In this video the sound is a mess.

This isn't the best example of the man in black, but I saw him on this tour and his tone was to die for. Do Semour Duncan still make those quarter pounders? I think it was the later Battle Rages On tour when he used the white Marshalls and the tone was even better. At this point I was more or less oblivious to what Gillan et al were up to - I was so focused on this guy. Ritchie - come back, the rock world awaits you!

Ah... This is how I played guitar when I didn't have a clue what I was trying to do musically and just went for stringing together a bunch of technical bullshit glossed over to make it sound cohesive. Instead it sounded like shit. Listen to Jimi doing "Stone Free" at the Royal Albert Hall in 1969. THAT IS HOW YOU PLAY GUITAR!!! Ritchie needs to learn how to play scales all over again. And he should listen to some Jazz guitar to play with fluidity. A+ on the hair tosses though. Rock on!!!

He is the greatest ever. But his solo spots always were propositaly noisy. He plays godly the whole show, but he really likes to make noise and crash guitars on his solo spot. It,s more a visuall and theatrical kind of thing than musical - he delivers more musicianship during the concert than anyother guitarist in the world, except at this part of show. Ritchie is god!

@rebb61 Absolutely! And for many people, geniouses are hard to undertand. Many think that clean scales and so is the only way to play. Ritchie often combines this with rough structure and so on. I saw Steve Morse in concert with DP. He is amazing in his own right, but he (and the other before him that worked shortly in DP) doesn`t fit in the band. I feel it is way to clean and it would fit better in other styles. Ritchie, Jimi H and Neil Y has the dirty and sometimes a "sweetness" in the play.

I think the problem here is the sound. Not his playing. The sound here is really bad. The notes are not clear because of his bad guitarsound, I 've heard him play with a better sound on other videos than here! His solo of "Child in Time" where he played for the last time with DP is really better. In this video the sound is a mess.

This isn't the best example of the man in black, but I saw him on this tour and his tone was to die for. Do Semour Duncan still make those quarter pounders? I think it was the later Battle Rages On tour when he used the white Marshalls and the tone was even better. At this point I was more or less oblivious to what Gillan et al were up to - I was so focused on this guy. Ritchie - come back, the rock world awaits you!
