@vaquerar Yeah... My ass. I don't live all that far from Edmonton. That's a hell of a lie. Condition 1 weather usually means the windchill is under minus 100 degrees. Where I'm from the windchill record is minus 93... Edmonton's can't be much more. If any more. Edmonton's average winter temperature is in the teens. So... Nice try.
They are made by "Canada-Goose" in Canada. They are the standard issue parkas for the residents at McMurdo. There are a lot of counterfeits on the market. A real one will set you back about $800 U.S.D. but they are very warm, obviously.

So if you are not there for actual research and you are a janitor or repairman.. what are the requirement for those? I would imagine you would need a heck of a resume to even be a janitor in Antarctica right? About how long do most people stay stationed there and is there a waiting list? Do the janitors and other non scientists get rotated in and out of Antarctica or do they stay for a period of years?
It must be hard to work in those weather conditions 1 question were do you do go shopping or buy food because there is nothing but snow and wind in antartica thank forsharing this video
@pietrovaldes when the weather is that bad, most people don't work - and we don't get weather like that very often, so we're usually working almost every day!
your meals are provided to you there by a cafeteria-style kitchen. most of the food comes in once a year on a ship, and in the summer fresh fruit and veggies are flown in.
@teknotoast its not consistently like this - we had a bad stretch last winter and had a few storms back to back, but when i was there in 2006 we had only one condition 1 storm, and it lasted for maybe an hour or so.
there are still plenty of awesome days to be doing stuff outside!
Honestly, this is terrifying. I've lived in places that are cold and dark. You lose that rope you could freeze to death long before anyone can find you. Which would probably be sometime during the summer...
@wrenchbird we had 2 storms last winter that were con1 for quite a bit - and as i worked in the galley i was considered 'station critical' so i was lucky enough to have to go to work :)
@loch3124 i was actually surprised that the camera did as well as it did. i have a dslr that i wouldn't take out in that weather - but this is a konica minolta dimage a200 - and it never failed me walking to work in the crappy weather!
they have on one side all the researchers who work in their labs studying the samples, the climate changes and so on. on the other side there are the carpenters, the janitors, all the people needed to keep a polar station working in those extreme conditions. oh and also photographers, documentaries directors..

You're awesome if you work in a place where the weather is so bad you need a guiding rope to get you across the street.

Many thanks.

@caprican28 there are different requirements for different jobs, but basically you just apply and hope you get picked :)
if you're there for summer its 4-6 months, for winter 6-8 months or so. and yep, everyone gets rotated, you can't stay more than 14 months at a time.
