I've been playing with this, and I noticed when I place my head on his shoulders, the choke gets way tighter

no, there is no need to grab the gi. This lock is VERY powerful and I can guarantee that you would not be able to pull your head out. Its the same mechanics as in the "rear naked choke" but it targets the weakest angle of the neck + it's very painful on the neck (as much a crank as a lock). When you turn there is no escape or choice but tapping.

Try a few times slowly and don't forget to turn to the side.
