You can do that with regular onions also, AND they will overwinter So if you do it in the fall, after you've cleaned up the garden, you'll have green onions grown and ready as the garden center is setting out sets and seeds.
all my green onions this winter were done that way! happy! i got store ones and cut the bottoms off just where the white starts to turn green and they are still growing! very long too! i keep trimming them back and using the greens and they still grow 3 months now indoors in a cold garage under a light! it really works!
@huntncomfort Great! I love green onions but after the first part of the growing season in the spring i couldn't get any bulbs! No problem now! thanks Larry
I purchased store green onions and did this very same thing, so far 2 cuttings but getting thinner , this is all indoors.. so not sure of how different type of onions would do.. would have to try to find out sorta thing..
You can do this with celery too! Even store-bought celery! Just cut the base of the celery, insert 4 toothpicks evenly on each side like you would a potato, hover it on the rim of a glass of water and when the celery roots, you can replant it!
We're attempting to establish a section of lawn as onions, chives, and garlic. Hopefully to grow more onions than can possibly be eaten throughout the year, so they will self seed. Last year I found out how good those green onion bulbs taste when they are garden fresh, surprisingly as sweet as an apple!
that is a very cool video! I knew you could do it like 2 times... but 7!?!?! holy cow! i also heard you can do it with celery and lettuce. but not totally sure how.....assuming kinda the same way.
Larry This works great! I watched a video two weeks ago and planted a bunch to see if it would work. My update, using your watering system, works great! The greens are over six inches tall now. I also planted a garlic toe which has not reached the surface yet. I planted that three inches down. Hopefully, soon that will break ground.
Hey Larry, This is a great tip, I didn't think anyone else did it this way. I've been doing this for years but you know what I started two years ago? Just move some dirt around the onion and clip it off while its still in the ground then just water it. in just a couple days youl see growth.
@cfal53 I got the idea two years ago when i wasn't watching wat I was doing and I mowed about three feet of my onions off. just days later they were growing again. So now I just go down a little and cut them off.
