  • By 1889, the abbreviation socca' was in use, and the spelling soccer

had made its appearance by 1895."

  • 1889, socca, later socker (1891), soccer (1895), originally university slang, from a shortened form of Assoc., abbreviation of association in Football Association

  • sick vid guys. when are we doing sunday pick ups again?

  • do dupy

  • I'll tell you why, because their fathers liked it and it was a father son thing, and their fathers before them yada yada.

  • How could you idiots even argue about football?

Even Europeans know that American sports are best.

David Beckham is a male whore.

  • k i can agree that american sports r gud but if ur gonna tease soccer/football y the fuck do u search it on youtube cnt u search ur own damn shit

  • lol, agreed... there shall be peace

  • McKenzie, look its ok for you to not like soccer. Its ok for you to prefer the all american sports. It is ok for you to have your own opinion. Just dont make up crazy tales to justify it.

  • im with u on that one man

  • F-Bombs?..... HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAhhhahaha oh my god. And again with the grandiose "Ive lived in such and such" get over yourself man! I've lived in many countries too but it is inconsequential You need to face the fact that American football, Baseball, Basketball and Hockey are inferior in comparison with soccer. Stop trying to intellectualize the reason why soccer is more popular. Accept the fact that the general consensus is that soccer is king because more people like it.

  • Half of that I agree with myself. I believe football is popular because it's relatively simple to play, carries on from tradition and you need hardly any equipment to play. But for the holy high heaven of the 10th bloody time.

("Soccer is popular because most of the countries that play it are the poor countries") FALSE. I noticed that your point had changed and altered a tad. Anyway whatever, I simply do not care anymore. You carry on feeling smug, makes no difference to me.

  • Yeah and by the way, go ahead and challenge my claim of being a Ph.D candidate. It really makes a huge difference in my life. I LOVE THIS!!!

  • Yeah nice move calling in your friend to help aid you in the debate that is exposing you as an idiot. Like I said to him or her or whatever. Baseball can be played with a ball and a stick, football can be played with a piece of garbage, basketball can be played with a ball a tree and a handmade hoop and WHO THE FUCK would want to play hockey? lol Loser.

  • HOLA!!

  • We all already know many poor countries enter the world cup but I repeat because you seem to have missed it. ~ "Soccer is popular because most of the countries that play it are the poor countries" FALSE. Not the fact that poor countries play football, but because of why it is popular. See that, I can use capitals in almost every post too. :/

  • Lol so you resort to schoolboy insults and assume I am a hater because I disagree? Yet you miss the most obvious statement and cover it up with something you ALREADY said.

  • Wow, you are so immature!

  • No rebuttal for my argument about the impoverished countries being able to play American sports just as cheap as soccer? You have no rebuttal. And stop emailing me! You are nothing to me... and if you have something to be said that you wont say here then don't say it at all ... you are such a loser. Go play with your padding.

  • McKenzie I am in a Ph.D program . You however are a two bit idiot who says "Soccer sucks in 87 languages" Your preference interferes with your debate. You are an idiot. Your insults, they make me laugh. You do nothing but reveal your own insecurities to me. I'm also traveled, do I brag? no, because it is inconsequential. What you've seen and surmised holds no validation. I commented on your statement because I found it to be so idiotic, I couldn't resist. You cannot make me step down.

  • Most who are Ph.D. candidates, such as my brother, do not resort to name calling when losing a debate as you clearly did once you left the pub.

The whole argument arose out a desperate need on your part to defend the indefensible. It was merely pointed out that football (soccer) was popular worldwide due to the ability of those in the impoverished countries to play (soccer) with rock or even a milk carton substituting for the ball. Simple as that, yet some were offended by the facts.

  • Who the fuck are you now? What did Mc Kenzie call in his girlfriends to help him out? What the fuck kind of bullshit is this? Well, anyway then, you are wrong because baseball can be played with a stick and a ball, American football can be played with a empty coke can and basketball can be played with a ball, a tree and a piece of metal. Probably from an empty OIL can, I hear there are alot of those lying around in the third world countries.

  • I'm American, but what's so expensive about getting a stick, a plastic ball, and putting it together to play some baseball in the streets? Or what about getting a ball and playing American football in the streets? If you don't want to wear pads, just call it Rugby. All these games are as simple as soccer. The fact that sport originated long before America was discovered, it seems soccer has filtered out as the most popular amongst popular sports still played to this day.

  • Thank you.

  • Once I left the pub? Losing the debate? your brother? I think you are slightly off your rocker fella. Your profile says it all though, really.

  • nice this video love!!

  • see my video!!

    and

    suscribe to me!

  • You're chatting pure bollocks and you know it. Who the hell said Europe is growing? All of these avoided points you try to make obviously didn't teach you common knowledge.

Stop avoiding the point of popularity with your birth con shit and your WWII crap.

  • A few statistics that you dig up from Google and the TV and bragging about travelling says nothing more than the fact that you don't know shit yourself.

And of course Football is known internationally, hence it being popular and so sheer numbers of poor countries alone DO NOT aid how popular football is.

  • Lol certainly it seems that way.

  • Don't mind McKenzie Woodzta. He is obviously a person controlled by ego. Pity him instead. He probably grew up afraid of the council housing kids.

  • Hey Matt. You forgot to mention that the UK lets in all those terrorists from Pakistan and the middle east.

It's like a brown wave of towel heads and burkas over there.

I think they do that in case one of them can eventually play for Man U.

  • You are an idiot, and you obviously have some insecurities about council housing as you felt the need to mention it again in the email. Did those kids pick on you? aww. Grow up, it has nothing to do with math. You are a self righteous philosophizing dim wit.

  • I'm 23 not 18. 18 is my age I put for all sites so don't become personal and attempt to compare your typical televisionised brain to someone you do not know... That doesn't matter regardless. Anyway don't chat fart. Any common uneducated person of any kind knows that if it wasn't for Europe it will not be as popular as it is now.

  • And don't tell me what I can or cannot do, I really can list many more examples in a heartbeat. A huge percentage of the countries that are poor and do have football as their national sport don't even aid in how popular football in the slightest is in the first place.

  • You Buffoon! That has nothing to do with your argument. And never email me again you scared lil bitch, whats the matter you too scared to say it all here? Kids can play American Football with a piece of garbage, they choose the superior sport.

  • Didn't think you'll come out with such a silly answer. Europe is pretty much the home of football with plenty financial stability, we have other sports are not far behind such as Rugby and at third it will be cricket.

  • Being totally honest, football is growing more and more because of Europe. Yes there are poorer countries such as Brazil but then even Brazil has it's Cultural side for tennis and F1. Can't be telling me they are overly cheap.

Nearly the whole of South America couldn't give a stuff about football and they're not overly rich either. I could go on with examples all day but to be fair. The reply you came out with sounds like it revolves around being spoon fed information from the television.

  • Yes mate, 3rd world countries like .... UK, ireland, wales, scotland, france, germany, austria, italy, sweden, norway, finland, Czeck republic, greece, turkey, switzerland, poland, China, japan, s.Korea, austrailia etc etc ... you idiot. Go play with your padding.

  • Tradition or not, QUOTE "Soccer is popular because most of the countries that play it are the poor countries" ~ That is false.

  • who the hell made this its bullcrap

  • Amazing! I love it! More please

  • there better stuff by loads in best soccer streetstyler :)

  • see Zidane aged 7 with his brother, search me

  • Here the funny thing so England spread the word calling it soccer to countries they crossed After the established Association Football name which was to long to say . I forget the exact date but, Then England decides to change it to Officially being called football , disregarding to tell the North American continent of its switch to the official name" football" thus American's kept calling it soccer as the world called it football. which in the end is all the same cheers. Live and learn

  • Well then tell me how Americans ended up calling a sport where you nearly never tutch the ball with your feet for fotball. Seems a bit strange.

  • In 1889 the word was "socca", later it was "socker" in 1891 and finally seemed to settle on "soccer" by 1895. The word is supposed to have evolved in University slang, created by shortening the word "Association" and adding "er".

  • interesting data friend

podrias to put it in my video

  • hello

    please

    friend

my video response one yes?? please

    figo10666 copyrigth quit please!!

  • sweet vid come check out mine please !!!

  • Soccer football is for Europussies.

  • great vid. ^_^. i really hate how american football stole the name of a true sport. :(

  • The accepted origin of the word "soccer" is that its a contraction of the word "Association" with reference to "Association Football". Its the Something my friends go hate on American Football for stealing our games name!!!! cheers

  • you have some nice shots there. well done.

although i suppose this is targeted more towards an American audience...cos that line "as you've never seen it before" would have to mean you've got something EXTREMELY extraordinary for those of us already very familiar with the sport~ :) if it's for people who haven't seen much, well then, i hope it gets them interested. good luck! do justice to the beautiful game. :D

  • IT'S CALLED FOOTBALL YOU YANKIE GITS!

  • I KNOW!

From now on lets just call

    american-fotball for soccer.

We had fotball a long time before they did.

    They just stole the name.

  • QUOTE "Soccer is popular because most of the countries that play it are the poor countries"

Not true at all. They play Football simply because they want to... Not because they can't afford equipment for anything else. I've seen first hand how a poor country can put random junk together to play a sport. Some 3rd world countries that like baseball play modified versions of cricket with an extremely thin stick, similarities to baseball and etc.

  • you're right also...but still "soccer IS the most popular sport worldwide, and the poor CAN'T play american-football because they CAN'T afford gear, so they don't want to be breakin' bones w/out gear neither. For the real football (soccer)..all you need is something shaped like a ball. Simple as that.

  • Good point there!

  • lmao

  • All that fighting about streetsoccer. Let's just see what the future brings! We hope Street Session does well.

Good luck guys! Come to Amsterdam soon and we will play against you!

  • that sux and im trying to be positive :)

  • man come on soccer is not for americans...how many times will i have to say that?

  • Football is not because is a amusing sport, football is about traditions, you will love the football because you father, grandfather.. loved it.

So it's a bit pointless to try to popularize it in USA,for example American Football is quite more funny, also Basketball.

  • Yeah this is cool, but you should search for Mib and Keeg on youtube. It's really funny and u should subscribe!

  • I like streetball.

  • QUOTE "Soccer is popular because most of the countries that play it are the poor countries"

  • i oooooo

  • There is a reason futbol, not football, is known around the world. Because it's cheap. How much does a uniform cost? Only a few hundred bucks. Times about 14. That's only a thousand dollars! Any country can do it! It's easy and cost efficiant. But baseball? Football? Basketball? All will cost arm, leg, your ass, and wasted time. But futbol has the most class and isn't stereotypical. THAT is what sells it

  • nice but see my freestyle video!!

  • omg u guys are......no words to describe....maybe wanabes......the stree is a way of life....y dont u get a life its freestyle not street smart asses

  • :D niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice

  • mattmckenzies there are only 200 million people in the US so football cant draw more fans than that and not everybody watches american football(probably because its gay). Also... with a name like yours it sounds like you blow dogs.

  • soccer is futbol being im in hispanic. football is the most widely known sport in the world. second i believe is cricket. im from L.A.california oh yeah and U.S. sports are kick ass like baseball and basketball which were U.S. by nature. american football is a dumbed down version of the NFL. just my comment though. oh yeah and the U.S. soccer (football) team is the best in my opinion. i am a patriot after all. europe football has a certain qualities to it as does football in the america's.

  • Is this music Phillip Glass?

  • Bush is a bad president but he is OUR president, if you get my drift. Blair was better than Brown ever will be.

New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers sell merchandise around the world.

It was not Pele's fault. He was trying to sell a very boring sport where you sit and watch grass grow. Real football and baseball and hockey are far more exciting.

I have played all three all my life, plus soccer, plus hockey plus auto racing and handball.

  • americans are shit at football those werent even good skills in that advert

  • I agree. Americans can't play football soccer worth a darn.

  • Good for Bermuda. What a wonderful story and thanks for sharing it.

Yeah, Bermuda calls it football along with just about every other country on the planet. How strange.

Now, I wonder if you can figure out why Americans don't refer to soccer as football. This one is a tuffy. Hint: It has something to do with another sport with a similar name.

  • I still don't get how the ball is carried with the hand yet people call it football. Maybe their helmets are on too tight? Oh well, I have a life outside of youtube and the sports world to get to. Peace.

  • ChampUSC, I agree with you but nothing stays the same. lsmalls has a good point because we in Amsterdam are talking with you guys in the US by internet. Youtube is a big help to show children all over the world this game (like the US). Soccer as it was in the 70s and 80s is not the same as it is in 2007. Computer games where we play in show soccer fans the new way of playing. Look at how the new stars play the game. It is exiting to watch. All you need is a ball and your passion.

  • Haha. You guys are funny. You have this impression that Americans do not travel beyond their borders.

I've been all over the world, including most of Latin America and Europe.

I played soccer as well. I even like it but, as with most Americans, I'm going to figure out ways for my children to play American football, baseball, and basketball.

If my children end up devoted to another sport, whether it's soccer or horse racing, I will support them in that.

  • Soccer, football, futbol etc... is the biggest and fastest growing youth sport in the US.

  • Then how came the guys are always on cable and hardly network TV?

  • You see where respect is shown and you see the haters. They have no idea about the background of the players. They assume because they are American, they lack quality, vision etc... on the pitch. I guarantee most people hating have no clue what to do when someone is really defending. Besides, one reason why I play the sport is because it's been a vehicle to connect with people around the world and show appreciation on different levels. The game should humble you, not reveal your ignorance.

  • Ismalls says that "soccer...is the biggest and fastest growing youth sport in the U.S."

Dude, that may be true but it was also true back in the 70's, 80's, and 90's.

In the final analysis kids will gravitate to whatever sports their fathers and brothers and cousins play.

I'm guessing that won't be soccer and Beckham is no Pele either. He's not attracting new players.

  • You are looking short term and I don't need to explain myself, it's the world's favorite sport. The US is behind and yes it will take some time and no it's not just gonna take Beckham and Pele. As far as the TV comment below, c'mon that's in the US. Venture out a bit see and the world.

  • Hey, I'm sure you know as well as I do that Americans will find whatever they really like and glom onto it.

The fact that soccer is the world's favorite sport just means that it's easily played by kids from even the poorest countries where all you need is a ball, or even a rock or a can.

I doubt that soccer can make much headway, though, because of all the baseball, football, and hoops that are woven into the fabric of American society.

I'm not saying it's right or wrong. Just the facts.

  • I'm simply telling you how it is here in America. Not how I want it to be.

    Don't hate the messenger.

  • i thought that was awesome .

  • fucking yank! know no football

  • watch my video response to this its gr8 5*

  • Looks bollocks to me, looks like the yanks have made yet again made FOOTBALL look stupid. Well done

  • STREET FOOTBALL, FOOTBALL is the name of this sport. The other, you can call it "purseovoid" or "purseball", because they play with a Louis Vuitton purse.

  • i can do better moves my eyes closed

  • actully i dnt have to watch street soccer on TV i ive it every day......lol i think that this is better then a fat guy watching it and keep dreaming about beeing like 1 of them .....

  • We can't wait to see the series. We have never seen streetsoccer filmed like this! Great work boys!

    Streetwizards

  • have either of u actually played these sports competetively?im a football man but i kno it takes alot of skill and and co-ordination to play these sports at a high level!american football is a high impact sport and these "fat girlyboys" u refer to wud probably coz u both, and myself, quite a bit of damage if they wanted to!and if these sports aren't requiring skill, why arent u all top athletes in all these fields?

  • high impact sport? uh..have u ever seen a rugby game? its as high impact as US football yet rugbymen dont wear as many protection pads as american football players. Ok maybe i went too far with the skill issue. but i still think that soccer involves more skills than american football, baseball and hockey

  • How are you?

  • I love soccer and street soccer, But this show seems bad i think its going to ruin the image of street soccer.

  • mad gay

  • the manager, pitcher, and catcher do about 90% of the thinking though. and btw, the greatest baseball player ever was a fatso.

  • yo, most baseball players back in the day were poor too. only now that it's become organized is it expensive.
