There is a reason futbol, not football, is known around the world. Because it's cheap. How much does a uniform cost? Only a few hundred bucks. Times about 14. That's only a thousand dollars! Any country can do it! It's easy and cost efficiant. But baseball? Football? Basketball? All will cost arm, leg, your ass, and wasted time. But futbol has the most class and isn't stereotypical. Youtube is a big help to show children all over the world this game (like the US). Soccer as it was in the 70s and 80s is not the same as it is in 2007. Computer games where we play in show soccer fans the new way of playing. Look at how the new stars play the game. It is exiting to watch. All you need is a ball and your passion.

I played soccer as well. I even like it but, as with most Americans, I'm going to figure out ways for my children to play American football, baseball, and basketball.
If my children end up devoted to another sport, whether it's soccer or horse racing, I will support them in that.

Here the funny thing so England spread the word calling it soccer to countries they crossed After the established Association Football name which was to long to say . I forget the exact date but, Then England decides to change it to Officially being called football , disregarding to tell the North American continent of its switch to the official name" football" thus American's kept calling it soccer as the world called it football. which in the end is all the same cheers. In 1889 the word was "socca", later it was "socker" in 1891 and finally seemed to settle on "soccer" by 1895. The word is supposed to have evolved in University slang, created by shortening the word "Association" and adding "er".

The accepted origin of the word "soccer" is that its a contraction of the word "Association" with reference to "Association Football". Its the Something my friends go hate on American Football for stealing our games name!!!! cheers

Not true at all. They play Football simply because they want to... Not because they can't afford equipment for anything else. I've seen first hand how a poor country can put random junk together to play a sport. Some 3rd world countries that like baseball play modified versions of cricket with an extremely thin stick, similarities to baseball and etc.

you're right also...but still "soccer IS the most popular sport worldwide, and the poor CAN'T play american-football because they CAN'T afford gear, so they don't want to be breakin' bones w/out gear neither. For the real football (soccer)..all you need is something shaped like a ball. Simple as that.

There is a reason futbol, not football, is known around the world. Because it's cheap. How much does a uniform cost? Only a few hundred bucks. Times about 14. That's only a thousand dollars! Any country can do it! It's easy and cost efficiant. But baseball? Football? Basketball? All will cost arm, leg, your ass, and wasted time. But futbol has the most class and isn't stereotypical. soccer is futbol being im in hispanic. football is the most widely known sport in the world. second i believe is cricket. im from L.A.california oh yeah and U.S. sports are kick ass like baseball and basketball which were U.S. by nature. american football is a dumbed down version of the NFL. just my comment though. oh yeah and the U.S. soccer (football) team is the best in my opinion. i am a patriot after all. europe football has a certain qualities to it as does football in the america's.

ChampUSC, I agree with you but nothing stays the same. lsmalls has a good point because we in Amsterdam are talking with you guys in the US by internet. Youtube is a big help to show children all over the world this game (like the US). Soccer as it was in the 70s and 80s is not the same as it is in 2007. Computer games where we play in show soccer fans the new way of playing. Look at how the new stars play the game. It is exiting to watch. All you need is a ball and your passion.

I've been all over the world, including most of Latin America and Europe.
I played soccer as well. I even like it but, as with most Americans, I'm going to figure out ways for my children to play American football, baseball, and basketball.
If my children end up devoted to another sport, whether it's soccer or horse racing, I will support them in that.

You see where respect is shown and you see the haters. They have no idea about the background of the players. They assume because they are American, they lack quality, vision etc... on the pitch. I guarantee most people hating have no clue what to do when someone is really defending. Besides, one reason why I play the sport is because it's been a vehicle to connect with people around the world and show appreciation on different levels. The game should humble you, not reveal your ignorance.

Hey, I'm sure you know as well as I do that Americans will find whatever they really like and glom onto it.
The fact that soccer is the world's favorite sport just means that it's easily played by kids from even the poorest countries where all you need is a ball, or even a rock or a can.
I doubt that soccer can make much headway, though, because of all the baseball, football, and hoops that are woven into the fabric of American society.
I'm not saying it's right or wrong. Just the facts.
