I'm trying to figure out how anyone could mistake a straight horizontal motion for someone hanging themselves. Hanging is generally a very vertical sort of act... o_O I'd heard of it but had never seen it myself, now that I have I can't figure out how such a ridiculous rumor started in the first place.

I am going to be producing typographical posters to bring back this classic film and give it life once again so that people want to watch the film. 2. A Production Crew Member Hung Himself, Not a Munchkin.
- My Grandfather told me about it long before he went under in the 90's. He said the guy was just depressed and killed himself during filming.He Hangs on the left hand backdrop among the trees in the Lion's Forest.
first i watched this on my iphone, then my computer. then i bought the movie and watched it on my 60' tv and it is sadly a bird >_< lol i wish it was more exciting but the white moving thing is actually the wing of that big bird that looks mainly black. check it out.
To me it looks like a lady hanging herself from the wasit, it can't be a bird cuz why would they just show the wing? And what about the other wing? And what kind of bird is that big? I doubt they had an eagle there

Okay for those of you who say you watched this movie recently, I have too and it doesn't look like this. It has been edited to look like a bird. Ask maybe your grandparents for the very original 1920s version, then what do you? Not a bird! And the person looks sideways because some people hang themselves by the waist.

its a human i have debunked it because as people say it was a bird how ever its not if it is the wings should of been seen clearly at the other end if it was stretching its wings thats the case its not a bird but however the wizard of Oz did have a lot of injures on set they say the set is cursed 2 stunt double were horrificle injured and 1 of them died from being set a light also the way it happens is the human (Munchkin) is there the rope is clearly visible as the body swings back and forth.

This is one that my grandparents gave me from their VCR collection, and I doubt that someone from their earlier years took the time and effort to make a fake, which I'm unsure if it was even a possibility in that time.

This suicide was a crane extending its wing. From our view, the bird is obscured by the tree so no suicide. Pretty sure somebody on set would've noticed a dead midget in the tree.

the original movie did indeed have the munchkin hanging himself and it was much more clean.. remakes have been made since where they have tried blurring it out and turning it into a crane so that it would fool people. also, the original Tin Man that started the movie was not the same Tin Man in the end of the movie because he was allergic to the tin that he was covered with and actually died halfway through. this though does not have video evidence because it wasn't on set.

No part of what you just said is true. The original movie did not have a munchkin hanging himself. It is an african crane that was borrowed from a Los Angeles zoo and can be seen throughout the scene. Also, there is only one Tin Man used in the film. Buddy Ebsen was originally cast in the role but had an allergic reaction to the make up and dropped out. He didn't die. He later starred in the Beverly Hillbillies. Jack Haley is the only Tin Man filmed throughout the movie.
@cletusthefet He didn't have an allergic reaction. They used pure aluminum powder on his makeup, which is toxic and accumulates in the lungs. His became sick from the toxic makeup. They had to take out the aluminum for the next actor. Ebsen was too debilitated from the aluminum in his lungs to continue.

It's not a person hanging themselves. Watch the rest of the clip (blu-ray) there is an osterich in the background, and looks like he tried to bite one of the actors as they skipped by him.

EVERYONE. I am Thoggnee, and you can look me up as I have never trolled on any site. THAT MUNCHKIN is MY GREAT UNCLE. His name is Clyde Pollard, a stage hand on the set. (he also helped a jaguar leap on a Tarzan Movie, and helped construct the Hand from the Beast with 5 Fingers) His job was to control a small group of birds on set. The director had noticed him, and signaled him to drop down. I doubt many will beleive me, but I just had to write the truth down somewhere. Thanks Youtube.
this is not the correct version of the hanging figure in the background. This is the newer version where what was in the background was replaced with a bird. The original version is where you can see it...

Okay, for any idiots claiming THIS is the original cut, slap yourself in the face.
This is the edited version, and no, I don't mean the remastered version for DVD, I mean this IS NOT the original VHS tape, which shows it.
They did a store recall shortly after the release, but anyone who got their hands on one of those copies knew the damage was done.

This is one that my grandparents gave me from their VCR collection, and I doubt that someone from their earlier years took the time and effort to make a fake, which I'm unsure if it was even a possibility in that time.

This suicide was a crane extending its wing. From our view, the bird is obscured by the tree so no suicide. Pretty sure somebody on set would've noticed a dead midget in the tree.

This is an OSTRICH that was on the set spanning its wings throughout many different shots in the background. There was no "munchkin hanging" or "stagehand" hanging and is all a myth. This is in the edited and original US and European versions. The bird is clearly in many scenes through the dance segments, look closely and you'll see!!

the original movie did indeed have the munchkin hanging himself and it was much more clean.. remakes have been made since where they have tried blurring it out and turning it into a crane so that it would fool people. also, the original Tin Man that started the movie was not the same Tin Man in the end of the movie because he was allergic to the tin that he was covered with and actually died halfway through. this though does not have video evidence because it wasn't on set.

No part of what you just said is true. The original movie did not have a munchkin hanging himself. It is an african crane that was borrowed from a Los Angeles zoo and can be seen throughout the scene. Also, there is only one Tin Man used in the film. Buddy Ebsen was originally cast in the role but had an allergic reaction to the make up and dropped out. He didn't die. He later starred in the Beverly Hillbillies. Jack Haley is the only Tin Man filmed throughout the movie.

@cletusthefet He didn't have an allergic reaction. They used pure aluminum powder on his makeup, which is toxic and accumulates in the lungs. His became sick from the toxic makeup. They had to take out the aluminum for the next actor. Ebsen was too debilitated from the aluminum in his lungs to continue.

That's a bird... there is a version on youtube "Wizard of Oz 2011: Hanging Munchkin Found on VHS Tape" that does show the munchkin hanging in this scene... there is another scene also... the scene with the horse and driver when dorothy gets on the carridge... just above the drivers head and slightly to the right in the far back you see a munchkin swaying back and forth left and right... it's only in the old versions of the movie and has been edited out for obvious reasons.

EVERYONE. I am Thoggnee, and you can look me up as I have never trolled on any site. THAT MUNCHKIN is MY GREAT UNCLE. His name is Clyde Pollard, a stage hand on the set. (he also helped a jaguar leap on a Tarzan Movie, and helped construct the Hand from the Beast with 5 Fingers) His job was to control a small group of birds on set. The director had noticed him, and signaled him to drop down. I doubt many will beleive me, but I just had to write the truth down somewhere. Thanks Youtube.
