With planes there's a technical meaning: Manoeuvres performed whilst in a stall; though this has degenerated into a generic term for acrobatics. I don't know if there's a technical term with helicopters, but I suspect it just means (as with the latter plane form) acrobatics. For a helicopter, that probably means anything that is designed to go inverted.

OK... let's answer a few questions here:

1) The engine is smokey because the RC helis use a lot of oil to cool them and I think the mixture is 40:1 on that particular.

2) The rotors 'blow air in the wrong direction' by using negative pitch. When you use the collective, it typically pushes the air downward. With negative pitch, the rotors can swing both sides of neutral.

@jbbcu1 An aerobatic R/C heli uses positive blade pitch in normal flight like any other collective pitch machine. For inverted flight, you flip a switch on your transmitter commonly called an "idle up" switch. When in this mode, the blades are capable of both positive and negative pitch. With negative pitch you are essentially reversing the thrust of the blades, which allows you to fly inverted.

@ballhogrod R/C planes and Heli's have a weighted pickup in the fuel tank that flops around as you go inverted or knife edge, etc. That way you never stall your motor from fuel starvation. Unless you just plain fly too long and run out.

There isn't any smoke at all. What you are seeing is vaporized oil. The other two components of the fuel (methanol and nitromethane) don't really produce any smoke when burned at the proper stoichometric ratio. The oil vaporizes but remains unburned. If the oil were burning, you would see a light blue-gray smoke instead of a thick white cloud. Hope that clears everything up =)
