  • Is this from a 2004 Freelander? My sister just got rid of hers, it seems to be a real common prob with these ones... less than 50,000 easy miles and the thing blew a headgasket!... Such a lemon! So sad, considering the companies long reputation of building their stuff to be bullet-proof.

  • woow it looks brand new now :D

also the weld was beautiful :)

  • I doubt being in the states you see any Land Rover 2.25 Diesel engines! (2286cc), so my questions would be useless!

  • @Pyroman1990 ive seen one in junkyard i asked about it and they said the engine "ran away" and "grenaded" itself then i looked and there was 4 huge holes in the block

  • how much for this repair or without welding just a resurface and do you reasemple the head

  • @dekonziplok - Resurface runs around $70, valve job around $240 for the pair, parts extra.

  • So why don't exhaust gases have this effect when leaving the exhaust ports? Is it a pressure effect through a narrow outlet(gasket split) that combines to create this effect?

  • @pooperscooper71 - Because you have hot exhaust gasses pushing back and forth between the cylinders in what starts as a small hole and just gets bigger the longer you run it. There is very little back pressure on the exhaust ports so the heat doesn't build up and melt the surrounding material.

  • @fiatnutz I guess this could be a real issue on the block side of things as well. Do you ever have to resurface allow blocks for the same issue?

  • @pooperscooper71 - Yes

  • great video, thanks for posting

  • Hello there.

I would like to ask what filler do you use for the aluminium heads.

Furthemore i would like to ask whats the pre-heat temperature you look for.

And finally what amperage you use with the tig ?

    Thanks

  • @ngt84 - 4043 rod, 450 F., between 75 and 250 amps - pedal copntrolled.

  • What if the heads were prevoiusly grinded under specs?

  • How much under?

  • 1-2 mm

  • @LeftLiberalSoCal - toss it.

  • Is it hard to match the surface roughness of the new weld to the rest of head after grinding?

  • No.

  • This is a great video. I may be calling you soon, as I have a leaking head gasket on my Disco II.

  • Hi John is this head made of aluminum? If not can this be done to an aluminum head? thanks

  • This head is made from from aluminum.

  • These vids are great.

  • @.@ <--- Blind from tig welder! Nice job on repairs best I seen yet!

  • great vid

  • Was this the same vehicle that gave you the subject the the cylinder head straightening?

    Love your videos!

  • No, this was from another set that came in at the same time. Two sets in the shop within a day of each other, who knew?

  • My friend never cleaned his bolt holes out on his turbo escort put a new head gasket on and it burnt a bit of the head off! It was ported etc and he thought it was scrap so chucked it and put a standard one on! he could of got it welded! : O

  • i did this to gears once and works great no need to buy new ones

  • Very nice!!! Question...is that a common problem you get a lot? Or jsut a sometimes thing?

  • I happens more than you might think, especially when people continue to drive their cars/trucks with a blown head gasket.

  • nice tig work man!
