To compare Arrau in this work is simply a mistake, as Arrau does not have the intensity or power - and lets not forget it was recorded very late in his career. However, Richter's live performance from Sofia in 1958 is probably the most impressive performance.
@PIanoReview it's all bout personal taste, some people are attracted by different qualities in different artists, so i guess there is no "best" recording, nost impressive does not mean best, at least I wouldn't think so
re 'impressionistic', oh yeah. liszt's last works were a century ahead of the curve. it's been over 20 years since i 'seriously' studied piano, but 'new' liszt pieces were still being published occasionally.
some had long been hiding in plain sight. check out that 12 tone row that opens the faust symphony.

It's not on YouTube, but Josef Bulva's version of this is the best. Then Arrau and Berman

I think it is the best version of this work... I heard Richter, Arrau, too... but I prefer this, personally.

Nowadays you can get all his piano works, i am a pianist
myself and play his latest pieces very often, they are very
inspired, sometimes truly religious and spiritual.
I think he was always far ahead of his time, not only in
his last years but also in the fifties and sixties of the
nineteenth age.
His last symphonic poem "von der Wiege bis zum Grabe"
is a masterwork, neglected undeservedly, one of the
most modern and interesting pieces of the whole genre.

This was my first record of this piece, to me it remains
unsurpassed: It is very deeply felt, you never think about
technique, sometimes, in the first pages, it seems a bit
rhapsodic, but it is musically vey coherent. You can hear
the impressionistc qualities too, allmost no wrong notes.
A really "transcendental" performance!
