  • Ah I see pardon my ignorance.

  • Halo 2 my ass quake started it

  • @misdekpkac No, the point is, Halo possibly started the trend of having FOV too low, Quake had a "normal" 90 FOV. Halo was one of the first 75 FOV games. Maybe not explained so well by me.

  • fucking console shit games, every thing they added to games suck!

fov should be fov by default

  • @TheSUBGAMER Still raging?.

  • @dylanwohoo lol chill fag

  • @TheSUBGAMER I am chill.

  • @dylanwohoo fagy? -)

  • This wasn't even an actual explanation as to what FOV is.... =(

  • @lithiumfoxPR fov, field of view changing your fov either increases your field of view or shortens it.

    prerrty self explanatory.

  • @lithiumfoxPR fov is basically how much you can see on the screen at once in degrees

  • Fun fact: 75 is the default fov in TF2

  • Comment removed

  • @scottylans and it still is popular.

  • @scottylans Lol it's still one of the most incredibly popular games out there and the recent update resulted in 100k users on at a time for several days straight.

  • @scottylans You dont like this game... YOu LIE! I WILL KILL YOU WITH MY HATS!

  • @Darkstaer887 I am a single player gamer. I only used TF2 as it was popular at the time of making the video. This is a game more people will have been likely to see. It's just not for me.

  • @scottylans dont need to explain yourself, i could give half a shit less if you dont play this game :P

  • @scottylans Any idea how to put the FOV over 90 now?

  • @M3aaaqHD

No faggot, go back to quake.

  • @ceilingkitteh thanks for the reply .. everyone has they're opinions on quake/games.. :\

  • @scottylans u only played cuz it was popular at the time? fuckin sheep

  • @true91able tf2 is amazing tbh.. like quake but with different classes :P

  • @true91able i never liked you

  • @true91able dude,I KNOW RIGHT.

    this game makes me angry.

  • (after reading the description)

AN AUSSIE THAT DOESN'T SURF? HOW IS IT POSSIBLE?!

Honestly, I don't even think of surfing when I think "Australia." I think of Kangaroos, Crocodiles, teleporters, cloaking, Saxton Hale, mustaches, etc. But never surfing.

  • low fov makes sniping indeed easier.

  • putting it on 60 can get you awesome sniper no scopes

  • @aelita12345678910 Yes, that is why i play tf2. You cant no scope, Ya, you can quick scope, but its not as efective as mw2 and halo

  • @ISlycooper120 i know

  • there is a way for put the gun a bit more far?

  • Humans can see 180 degrees in total, and each eye I would say about 100/110 and they both bleed into each other in the middle.

  • Ahh, i wish Tf2 accepted 3 monitors to play with, 180 degree would be so awesome.

Thinking that the monitors are the right size.

  • @Viikktor Go buy an ATI5850 and enable Eyefinity, pretty sure it will work.

  • @scottylans Tf2 does not accept it i think.. i have a pretty new ATI card tho, but i need 2 more screens that are the same size as my primary one then, and probably would have to get a ATI card than can handle 3 screens i only have 2 outputs as of right now.

  • @DownstairsB cos he said he'd only just bought the game

  • @kaelan7777

Valve blocked the command so you can no longer change your FOV. Which sucks, but there it is.

  • text too small :c

  • @FlyingAce1015 I am narrating the text in the video anyhow.

  • @scottylans oh sorry when I sent that comment was probably one of the days my audio didn't work

  • when i put fov in with a number but everytime its the same

  • Hold on, I see the visual difference between 130 and 75, but how does that affect gameplay apart from what you're seeing? Does it also change the actual size of the map?

When you were at 75, it looked like you took one step and you were nearly on the bridge. If you were at 130 and tried to walk, would it take more steps to get to the bridge?

  • @piplupisapenguin No. its like just being able to see more shit on your screen at once. Its an advantage. Its purely visual on your screen, but it DOES aid your playing. Watch the TF2 Tractics: FOV and Blind Spots Video. That will explain it.

  • can you change your view model field of view on 360?

  • You sell the 360 and buy a PC.

  • @scottylans i love you for this comment rly i subscribe and fav

  • @scottylans

    HEADSHOT.

  • @scottylans what are you going to buy with the money by selling an xbox? a netbook?

  • how do you do this on the xbox 360?

  • For reference, Bioshock 2 suffers the same problems as Bioshock 1 (low FOV)

However it was apparently an accident and a patch has or is being issued.

  • okay i got a 32' HD monitor and this game is runned off of my acer netbook...

Never lag and only 10 Ping

  • What kind of FOV does BS2 have?

  • Is a wider field of veiw favoured in competitive games?

  • Pretty much yep, makes things smaller but also can see more. Ideal is a huge huge monitor with a high FOV.

  • guyz can u help me now

i have 22" hd widscreen monitor

wot fov and zoom fov should i use?

  • Probably between 95 and 125 depending on what you tolerate. If it's 16:10 or 16:9 makes a difference too.

I'd say 100 would be fairly good at a rough guess.

  • I am not a duck :(

  • if you're using a widescreen monitor 106 fov is the 'widescreen version' of 90 which is for a 4:3 ratio screen

  • professional quake 3 players use 120 field of view. 90 fov is terrible

  • 90 FOV is fine on a 4:3 monitor for regular players though, it's not terrible.

    Less than 90 is terrible.

  • when i type in the command it dosent do anything :l

  • cod4 has 60 default and max 80 fov ;p

  • Because I am not a TF player.

  • Great video man. Keep fighting the good fight and spreading the word on how crappy a low FOV is.

  • Is this Three-Dog?

  • Higher FOVs make it easier to spot enemies comming and gives the player a better level of awareness. on games like COD hardcore mode, it's quite annoying when that split second of reaction is nessesary and all you can see is a 75 degree cone in front of yourself.

  • Halo, are you kidding me? It started with Quake in 96.

  • No you goon! The idea of using LESS than 90FOV seems to have come in at Halo, Quake 1 uses 90 as default.

  • Actually, Quake 3's zoom function consists of lowering the FOV to create a zoom effect. Q3 came out in 1999.

  • Yes but again, the DEFAULT FOV has been 90 in the gaming industry for a long long ime, the first and most stupid game to break this tradition for no apparent reason, appears to be Halo.

  • The reason why they did it in Halo is because of the helmet.

Ever worn a motorcycle helmet? That's what it's like in Halo.

  • Fuck the helmet, I'm playing a 16:9 game on a 16:9 TV with a 75 FOV? What!

Yet a 4:3 game on a 4:3 display on the PC has an FOV of 90? Please, Halo gone done fucked up dog.

  • As long as everyone has the same FOV, the size doesn't really matter.

  • Hmm... could this be used to add scope to all our favourite long range weapons, like revolver, flare gun or even the huntsman?

  • There are some custom cfg's where you hold the right trigger & it changes zoom to a small one. as soon as you release the button it goes back to normal

  • no.

  • Kind of funny how someone answers with a reasonable way of doing it, and then some retard comes along without reading.

  • I agree

  • wow.

  • i know right

  • "diddely' LOOOL

  • hacks use this to add scopes to non-scope weapons

  • AWESOME quality, codec/compresser/filetype?

    tell me all :D

  • I think what I did was run the game in a low resolution, and used fraps at full quality and speed (I have a fast machine) so it was actually running in 640x480 or 700x480 (something like that) then I used windows media encoder to compress it.

  • humans have 140 FOV

  • I've really no idea why people play at higher FOV's. Absolutely ruins one's aim, not to mention the perspective of the weapon.

  • This isn't about higher FOV's it's about normal FOV's and games with it set too low.

  • 90 is "just right" and anything higher (e.g. 120) is not "just right," no?

  • No.

  • Fair enough - I won't argue the point. It's personal preference.

  • it depends on the screen, 90 is perfect for 4:3 but the wider you get, the more the screen fills your field of view so you gotta adjust the rendering FOV to match.

  • Thanks.

  • I wish I could play on 110-120 it makes it much easier and you actually get to feel what's around you.

The problem with FOV 90 is that it's still very limited.

  • halo invented FOV

  • lol :)

  • hahahaha i caught that too.. lmao n00b

  • lol haha i laugh so hard at that. I really despise all the fanboys of halo 3 now a days. Halo didnt have the initiative to spawn anything new into the fps world. Halo hasnt "invented" anything. Not to mention its a sucky game. Way overrated.

  • it's an alright game, the cut scenes are among the most dramatic in the world IMO

but yeah it is really over rated.

  • @Dioroxic I could not have said that any better...

  • @Dioroxic

Halo did invent the regenerating health system, which is worse than not innovating at all.

  • @QWERTYCommander In Halo CE there was no HEALTH regen, it was energy regen. Health needed health packs to restore like all the other games but they added an additional layer of "extra-health" on top that recharges. We owe it to Halo 2 and Call of Duty 2 (or 1, I must admit I didn't play it) that regenerating health spread throughout the console market and found its way over to the PC market from there.

  • @SuckItLily

I did not know that. I never played Halo 1. I only played it in splitscreen with my bro and I hardly remember it.

  • erm the max now is only 90? cant go any further than that?

  • Not on servers with sv_cheats set to 0, which is basically more than 99% of servers. It's sad really, I want to play with 120 FOV :(

  • good vid, nice explanation, i remember seeing the FOV in the options and playing around with it but was unsure of what it might have been for. This vid helped clear things up!

  • Cool. I'm going to try fov 100000000

  • fov is measured in degrees and there are only 360 of them.

  • Well it seems FarCry 2 is doing the same thing Bioshock did with the FOV and making people feel like their 'eyes are 2' in front of their head' - so I guess my movie will get some more hits now, thanks to idiot developers not getting their FOV right (again!)

  • Great idea for Sudden Death:

Force the FOV to 50, and make everyone a pyro.

  • I miss my 100 fov in q2 I'm finaly used to 90 but I'm like a crazy man looking in every direction like a myopic deer in an alligator infested swamp.

  • whats the command to change the FOV?

When i try to change it and i type in fov 100 or something it doesn't change

  • i have it at fov_210 lol

  • Congratulations on not understanding the point of the video or why Halo was brought up in the first place.

  • He probably was replying to askgrunt.

  • No it wasn't

  • what is the default?

  • The 'industry standard' is 90 - many games nowadays do only 75 or even lower, to make things seem more 'close up and intense' but it makes people dizzy or feel claustrophobic.

  • If you're strictly referring to the practice and not the availability, a lot of oldschool Quake 2 and 3 players had already started doing so, and Quake 3 still predates Halo 1 by a few years.

  • You've missed the point again.

Around the Halo era, developers starting putting in a LOWER than 90 FOV as default, why I do not know, it's stupid in my opinion.

Of course we've been changing FOV since qtest but Halo seems to be where the lower than 90 FOV began.

  • I would just like to point out that the FOV customization started being recognized back in Quake 1, which was a good 4 or 5 years before Halo 1 was released.

  • He is referring to the practice of using lower FOV's than the 'standard' 90, not the ability to change it.

  • Correct - thanks

  • does this make your weapon appear different? if not, how to do that? i wonder because i have seen people playing with demoman and when he used the bottle you could see almost his whole arm!

  • Yes the FOV can change how the gun appears and how much of it you see.

  • thnxx for the helpfull movie m8 !!

  • wtf. it only changes your view. your a retard

  • i agree humans would have a bigger feild of view than the default however when using the wepons such as in ur case the heavies mini gun its best to hav it at noraml however i like to zoom when sniper (find it is easier)

  • you can do that or you can just go to options> multiplayer tab> field of view, and you can choose how much you get

  • Ok this is the second time I've had to say this.

This movie was made before the option was added, also this movie is to explain to people not how to change it but what it actually does and why higher can be better or tighter can be dizzying.

  • do u have to change resolution or is field of view sufficient for maximum gameplay?

  • The FOV command is seperate to resolution completely. It applies to all resolutions.

  • For some reason the console command doesn't work for me

  • you have to enable it through options. Just look for it, youll find it.

  • Perhaps the command should be accompanied by sv_cheats 1, not sure about that though.

  • yeah, i figured out a while ago that sv_cheats 1 needs to be enabled first

  • We used FOV in Quake over 10 years ago. FOV120 was the preferred option back then. :)

  • Actually most people used 110 ;)

  • You may be right. It was a long, long time ago! I think I used 120.

  • hey scotty how do you make that console thing to change the FOV thing out?

  • Field.Of.Vision i guess FOV stays for...

  • Field of View actually.

  • I figured that out too. Although both of them aren't that different from each other for the description of what FOV is.

  • I play with the original fov settings. I mean is that hampering me enormously? Nice video, really but now I got curious about my own settings. I'm going to test tomorrow.

  • how can FOV make ppl sick?! i mean how can anyone get sick from camera view... plz dont mention motion sickness. because, well i cant think of why...

  • They feel dis-orientated.

  • this was an odd phenomenon with me, as my sister gets the same type of sickness because of how the head moves.

  • My FOV can only go to 90 on servers... how do i get it to go further?

  • I believe that's the limit when online.

  • Console

  • I can see how good players use higher fov since u can see a lot more, even if it makes the game less enjoyable

  • Some of us actually find it more enjoyable - not being able to see stuff is frustrating.

  • Who is your daddy and what does he do?

  • He's a tumor surgeon.

  • C'mon, don't bullshit me!

  • He's a cop you idiot.

  • I think reduction of fov is used to make the people think stuff is moving faster, and the action is way stronger, with less stuff on screen...

  • Yep, to make console games look more exciting essentially.

  • Ahh yea now i see after using it. Im going to use it from now on cuz it makes games more fast-paced.

  • It has some uses in single player application but I'd strongly recommend against it in MP.

  • Very many good players of Quakengine-Games and other egoshooters use very high fov settings. I've been using 120 for a few years now.

I've got to try out how high the limit in TF is. So far I've been playing at the highest setting the menu could offer (90) but I hope you're able to play online on quite a bit more.

  • what happens if you use fov 360?

  • It looks really weird, you can't see behind yourself like you'd expect - also depends on the game too.

  • Great vid for those who don't know about FOV.

  • Thanks for the vid! Now in understand...

  • Good thing you can now set it between 75 & 90 in the options menu^^

  • Not only was that feature a new edition in the latest patch but this explains how FOV works for all first person games, including Bioshock and Halo - both of which have FOV 'issues'

    - Scott

  • Good video on FOV. You should have mentioned TripleHead2Go for near realistic FOV.

  • So few people have that though - so :/ yeah.

  • Any reason you started so zoomed out? Not to make the fov 70 look so small i'm sure. she smaller fov looks more professional (it's closer to what a camera has) and i personally prefer it, but it should be adjustable, say from 70 to 100 (90 is used for most games).

  • I started at 130 in order to show the difference in FOV fully, it should be clearer to people watching this the difference in FOV when they see such vast differences.

You'll note I end the video on 90 saying that's about right.

  • another thing, i dont understand whats the problem, with a server sv_cheats 0 thats all of them of course, it CANT be used, like many other commands like god or other that make you take big advantages.

Dig it up, you will se FOV in quake 1, i played back then, so i know when fov started but even if you could use it, its not that good, just for the sniper guy that you could script several kind of FOV (shortcuted)to make it better to shoot at diferent places.

  • FOV was in TF 1, in quake 1 there was fov commands.

Not since halo lol, you might not beeing born when fov command started lol

  • If you're addressing that to me, you have clearly mis-understood the video.

Firstly I specifically said that the *75* FOV seems to have started on Halo.

Secondly Halo on the Xbox which is what I mentioned, clearly doesn't support a FOV command.

Thirdly all first person shooters HAVE to some kind of FOV arrangement, or you couldn't actually see anything.

  • Yes i didn´t quiet get what you were saying, i understood it wrong, but i think in quake1 the fov was 75, but maybe your right, maybe it was really after the popular HALO, but beleive me, quake 1 was popular @ is own time. There werent almost any mor FPS so you imagine the popularity of it. Halo for other side had a proper console with it and it was well marketed and publicited, diferent times from now.

    Good games to you.

  • I've been playing FPS games since Wolf 3D, Ultima Underworld, Doom etc - trust me I remember Quake 1 :)

FOV default is 90 in Quake 1 and probably 95% of all FPS games, this new 75 rubbish has only cropped up recently.

  • Quake games default to a ninety-degree FOV.

  • That is the entire point of the video, the defining 3D games of the last decade were 90 FOV yet some of the new stuff is 75, for reasons unk
