Hey I just did Lancelets Monologue from the Merchant of Venice. I figured this would be a good place to get advice on acting. Please comment and tell me what you think. The video is on my channel.
I read for Herb at HB in NYC after studying FIlm in NY for yrs Aside from luvign my leather jacket he told me "WHO I WAS: showed in my walking and natural stride adn not to wrok agaisnt my personality and self, but incorporate it into the character. Ive been tryin it that way ever since, he was right.
@OctoberAle They each learned from Stanislavsky and took what they absorbed from him and made it their own, Like so many others around that time. They all put their own stamp on what they learned.
Studied with Uta and Sandy Meisner, 1 cycle each. 95% of the students were so rapped up in pleasing teacher.
I learned more about acting by getting up on a stage and getting in front of a camera.
Always made a living in NYC andLA.Now my Guild pension and Social security always keeps me in the MOMENT and I'm still working.....for what it's worth.
@Dion1957 I studied with Sandy as well. My experience was not yours at all. Sandy encouraged us all to find our own way, to develop our own path to "living truthfully". Studying with a good teacher is a great way to keep your chops up and work and experiment in between jobs. Athletes, dancers and musicians have coaches that prod and push them to excel, experiment and grow. There is nothing wrong with an actor doing the same with the ultimate goal being to work whenever and wherever you can.
Lindsay Crouse is one of the most underrated actresses in the world and I love hearing Uta Hagen say that she should be on stage all the time. Her performance opposite Joe Mangegna in "House of Games" is so wickedly funny I can't go six months without rewatching that movie.
Totally get your point man. Totally. I have no problem with the fact that your comment is completely useless and that you can "go off" on anyone you want here. Let me clarify though " you would never say things like that". . . comment. You would have never said anything like that to Uta Hagen. I meant you. Cowards like you abound here making attacks and hiding behind their anonymity. Age old story. Its cool. And now I've given you more fodder for your on line idiocy. Knock yourself out.
Watch the AMAZING acting in my 'Happy Sad' vid, then watch my 'Acting Masterclass' vid to see how it's done. Then watch the rest of my videos at your own peril.
this kind of comment so lacks in any usefulness. It is the kind of statement that lacks any courage (you would never say things like this to the person face to face) so is completely cowardly also.
@trueblue4321 Since when is the comments section restricted to comments of "usefulness?" And your comment is contradictory in itself seeing as its completely pointless to assume I or anyone else would not say such a thing in person.
@borstalboy1981 She didn't so no one ever paces..she said no one ever paces WITHOUT A REASON. I pace too A LOT..and it's always because I'm anxious about something or trying to figure something out.
@emergencyexit16 Pacing is an act of indecision. You want it, you don't want it. The thoughts actually go through your mind subconsciously in real life. But you as actor are aware and you must know what it is that you do, physically, and reproduce it naturally, that's why rehearsals exist.
All this Method shit destroys actors because it makes them think about their performance WHILE THEY'RE TRYING TO DO IT. Self conciousness wrecks a perf. Try Practical Aesthetics by Mamet. In other words, just act.
OMG. I studied with Uta for 5 years and this made me miss her so much. She was the most real teacher I have had in life in general. Amazing woman and truly an actor teaching actors.
That advice with the props is a little gem. It sounds like common sense but you see the difference in the reality of the performance, when straightening the trousers on the hanger is a background detail, and she's listening to the actor first.
@johansilvaissososexy i agree. you dont know what its like for the actor until you are in there shoes. Literally, my director had me wear the characters shoes weeks before opening night
Uta Hagen is a goddess. It's not just Meryl (or Amanda Peet or Whoopie) who recommeds her... she's pretty much the standard by which teachers are judged.

I have a problem can anyone help me? Im 17 and up tll now have wanted to be a musician. But I keep having this longing to study acting and be an actor. I' torn. I genuinely feel that I would make a good (method) actor because I have this love of the craft. I can cry and access genuine emotions. I can't think of anything better than studying acting with other passionate people. But I'm applying to uni for foreign literature. I'm just very confused right now. Should I just get into acting at uni?
I'm an acting coach/trainer. I'm a bit biased but you might want to look into the training methods of Sandy Meisner. If you're curious, google "Sanford Meisner" here on youtube and there are a bunch of really good vids to start you off. The documentary on his life is worth watching. Knowing how to cry on demand is great, but I've seen a bunch of those that can feel, but it still doesn't seem real. As Sandy said: Acting is living truthfully under imaginary circumstances. Good luck.
wow thanks! i think Im gonna try and get into acting at uni, and keep my music going too. Just wanna enjoy performing in all forms. At the moment i just feel like I could really get into acting. we'll see. . .
To be a successful actor you should first decide whether you are going to be pretty or ugly, and then to strive on that direction. Second, you should check your voice. The remaining stuff you learn it by reading or by going to workshops. Talent, in any event, is not as important as people believe.
that actually makes a lot of sense, but I think personally there is a huge personal journey you need to go on. It's easy to pretend to be angry or sad, but to BE angry or sad and to react realistically to another human being, with no conscious thought outside your scene, is another matter. I hate the actors at my school who all say 'oh I love acting!' and are loud and arrogant, but really don't get the beauty and the art of acting, and are actually quite bad actors.
hey,im also 17 & acting is my passion..i have a yr left of school & then im having a gap yr & then going too apply a drama schools,i'll be sacrafising everything for this and it may be all 4 nothing but i'm doing this because acting is my passion when im not acting it is all i want 2 do and when i am, i never want 2 stop..so u need 2 ask urself..do you really feel it inside?? what do you want the most??
I think time will play a big part for me. I know deep down I am an artist of some sort, because my music has given me that indescribable artistic high we performers all live for. I just need time to figure out what I want. I wish you all the best with your acting!
Sounds like you are on your way to discovering the artist inside of you. As artists we all start with the passion. Persistence hones our craft. And you're heart directs you where to go. Just never stop. And you will find success.
ok...not to be mean...but if you have to tell and remind people that acting is your passion...then case is that it really isn't...you just want to see what people are going to say...that's just like sumone always saying that their relationship is good...when you have to say it..chances are it's not...so stop tellin people and just show it..
Why not pursue both? Study Johnny Depp. He was a musician, and had every intention of making it. Nicholas Cage, a friend at the time, introduces him to acting.
Art is a universal expression.
In fact, why not learn to paint while you're at it. Who knows, maybe one day when you're living the life of a musician and working actor, you get a chance to gallery some paintings you've been working on?
yeah you're right! I'm just gonna throw myself into it. I have a theory which is not to spend all your time worrying about fame and fortune, instead just love the art and work hard at it and be the best, and fame and fortune wil follow.
that's what i mean, don't get into it for fame and fortune. BE an actor, love it and live it, and the things you want will come your way. I don't however know any actor who doesn't want to be known for and make money from his/her passion.

@AtLastOnTheGround i think that phrase shouldnt be used...because its open to interpretation....what does it mean to "see the acting" you know...many people would disagree on what THE acting is
by no means should acting on stage be as it is in our everyday life...Stanislavsky warned us of that.
Well no, we shouldn't be naturalistic in our acting (mumbling, slurring words, rubbing noses -- the annoying little unprofessional things that actors who want to "feel natural" onstage do) but, when the actor has done all of his character work and has personalized everything that he must, the acting will be invisible. You don't PUSH for the invisible and realistic acting, it will just happen with the right technique.
@AtLastOnTheGround well, technically, an actor should be able to act without a technique...just the simple fact of the imagined circumstances should be enough to inspire him to act truthfully....technique is for when you dont feel inspired.
but yeah that was my biggest gripe with a phrase such as "i shouldnt see the acting" is that for most people that means naturalism. But many characters are way more interesting when they are of the Fantastic Realism kind. They still should be truthful.
Let me clarify. We should not PUSH to be realistic, to "look natural." But when the actor has done all of the work that he must, he will not really be acting. Rather, he will be responding spontaneously to the realities that he has created for himself. And then, no matter the "size" of the emotion, it will be realistic because he believes in the circumstances.

Rather, he will be responding spontaneously to the realities that he has created for himself. And then, no matter what, he will -- and the audience will -- believe.
@AtLastOnTheGround Actually, it's "Hear! Hear!" And that's what Ms. Hagen's teaching was all about. HEAR the other actors, and you'll know what to do. Never stop listening when you're on stage, even if it's just to your own thoughts as the character.
Uta has 2 books. Respect for Acting and A Challenge for the Actor. Howard Fine teaches her techniques in Los Angeles and has his own book coming out this fall which expands on these concepts,
I read some books about Method acting ( the kind Uta taught ). I then put the Method into practice for my drama GCSE, and I was given 100% for the performances. I strongly recommend anyone trying to start out at acting, to either get yourself to some classes, or buy yourself some books.
damn its a shame shes dead i wish i had tried to take classes from her before she passed now i never will...Im aspiring to become an actor i have a lot of improving to do.
thanks 4 posting this ! i used to take acting classes from when i was 7 till when i was 10 and i kinda needed some brushing up to do so thanks 4 posting this video !!
There are different kinds of actors, other than the standard cookie cutter shape actors that are put out there in so called schools, etc. You know it when you see it. Acting schools offer a lot of what's already been learned, but have so much to learn still.
I get really nervous in groups of people. And the group could be no bigger than 3. I just get really self-conscious. If I took an acting course/lesson and lets say i really suck because of what i explained, will it help or will i just suck and my teacher asks me to leave? lol
well, if you are a very shy person, do you honestly think youll be able to act during acting lessons? if its only your class or school that terrifies you to act infront of, and you dont mind acting in public, then it will definately boost your confidence. i didnt even want to do orals infront of my class, but the acting lessons i took totally changed me and now im in every school play:) go for it!!
I know this may seem like a silly question, but recently I've been thinking about Acting, although when I was at school, the thought of having to act infront of class terrified me. If I was to take acting lessons, would this boost my cinfidence? or do you think I'd end up where I was before? ;/
honestly your best bet is watching performances (stage and/or film) with your favorite kind of characters in it. if you can strike some kind of a relationship with them, then the transition to acting will be easier. in other words, watch as many performances as you can before taking an acting class. hope this helps :)
I wanted to take acting lessons for awhile too, but just like you i was terrified. Then I took a one week introduction class and was absolutely hooked! You never know if you like it untill you try it! To prepare for my first acting class i read a couple books on acting which helped. And yes, it gives you that much more confidence when it comes to public speaking and improves communication skills!
my expeirience is that well experience hepls confidence but just being knowing that what you do is good makes it soo much easier to do it with ease in front of crowds. did that help?
click on my page to learn how to get an audition with the Executive Producer of "Reeper"/ "Grey's Anatomy"/"Criminal Minds"/ and the blockbuster film "Saving Private Ryan"
I disagree those good actors are gonna be good with or without her. They just go cause they ned the confidence. I personally LOVE and crave seeing someones craft and process on stage thats whats amazing. Such as a painting seeing the brush strokes or the style this idea of if you can se the work then its bad acting is fluff. Look at F murry abraham in Amadeus every brilliant thought and jesture is so lovingly and carefully played like beauiful music. That is whats thrilling to watch
I've used what I learned at HB in many aspects of my life. I've started a new Online Casting company (just hit my name and it will take you to my channel) I've been better at public speaking. It's made me more confident in my music and dealing with people in my industry. Overall it's helped me a great deal. I took a break from acting because of music and being in a band. Love HB.
I enjoy acting very much. I once took acting lessons (at age 9) from a woman whose mannerisms matched Uta's verbatim. I have never forgotten the general methods she taught. I must confess, I would never have discovered Uta Hagen had I not seen her in the movie, "The Other". She was mesmerizing. It never made sense that she had only bad things to say about it during her Charlie Rose interview.
I am fortunate enough to be studying with one of Uta Hagen's disciples, and he is an excellent teacher, but I would have loved taking the class with Miss Hagen herself. It's too bad none of us have that opportunity any longer.
i don't know what planet whoopie goldberg is from -- i don't dislike her,i suppose she's a decent enough soul, but whenever i hear her speak,i'm like what the f**k is she talking about?
This is a great video. Almost 20 years ago, I studied under a person who was taught by Uta and the lessons I learned in that class have stayed with me ever since.
this is really really cool! I am inspired to film my acting class now and this was the best acting at it's time... but the only of it's kind.. to shed light on this still cutting edge and evolving art form that is impossible to teach and learn but just comes naturally after time and with a Guru type mentor to take you all the way...
I never knew Uta was so real and down to earth. I always feared her because of her reputation. I studies there so long. I wish I had taken her class now.
This is Brilliant! I love the fact that Whoopi speaking in such hushed, hallowed terms about her. How I wish we had acting teachers who really cut to the chase like this, instead of ritually indulging in the vague, messy expensive wankfest which never made any sense. This makes SENSE, I love this. Thanks soo much for posting. Inspiring and very, very affirming.
Yes. She passed away in 2004. I was listening to an audio recording of her as Desdemona alongside Paul Robeson's "Othello" from the '40s. Unbelievable that no one had the foresight of filming a performance!
What I loved about Uta's class is it just made sense. What Whoopi said at the end about wasting her time? Absolutely true. She had no tolerance for it, but if you worked hard weren't full of self-indulgent b.s., she was incredibly generous. RIP, Uta.
Ive seen this video and Yes it is great. Uta really knows how to help other actors turely express themselves as the character they transform into. . . . oh and i think shes a chain smoker!
do you know who is enver petrovci? he is my acting teacher. he is one of the best teacher ever. i know that he is unknown. but celebrity is not same as good. am i right?
Whoopi - please take it easy on the pot.

I acted out in school once. I acted like I like acting. I acted out my desires once. Does this all count?
I am more comfortable writing down things for the actors to say than to do it myself. I haven't the nerve. And that is why I respect actors so much!!

"When I go to the theater, if I can see the acting I really don't like it."
Here here! The best actors out there are the ones who never show you that they're acting.
AtLastOnTheGround 2 years ago 72
@AtLastOnTheGround i.e. you should not go to school to "learn" to act. :p
QuantumProphet 1 year ago
@QuantumProphet
Actors need to be trained... so yes, there should be schools that focus on acting. Let us just hope that the schools teach Uta's wonderful technique.
AtLastOnTheGround 1 year ago
@AtLastOnTheGround i think that phrase shouldnt be used...because its open to interpretation....what does it mean to "see the acting" you know...many people would disagree on what THE acting is
by no means should acting on stage be as it is in our everyday life...Stanislavsky warned us of that.
Talli732 1 year ago
@Talli732
AtLastOnTheGround 1 year ago
@AtLastOnTheGround well, technically, an actor should be able to act without a technique...just the simple fact of the imagined circumstances should be enough to inspire him to act truthfully....technique is for when you dont feel inspired.
but yeah that was my biggest gripe with a phrase such as "i shouldnt see the acting" is that for most people that means naturalism. But many characters are way more interesting when they are of the Fantastic Realism kind. They still should be truthful.
Talli732 1 year ago 2
@Talli732

@AtLastOnTheGround Actually, it's "Hear! Hear!" And that's what Ms. Hagen's teaching was all about. HEAR the other actors, and you'll know what to do. Never stop listening when you're on stage, even if it's just to your own thoughts as the character.
Sheldonwh 7 months ago
@AtLastOnTheGround Yeah, I feel the same. But I always called it 'overacting'.
The best acting is when you see the actor, and his performance, and it just seems natural, and more human. That's what I like..

I read some books about Method acting ( the kind Uta taught ). I then put the Method into practice for my drama GCSE, and I was given 100% for the performances. I strongly recommend anyone trying to start out at acting, to either get yourself to some classes, or buy yourself some books.

There are different kinds of actors, other than the standard cookie cutter shape actors that are put out there in so called schools, etc. You know it when you see it. Acting schools offer a lot of what's already been learned, but have so much to learn still.

Do you have to audition to get into her class? I feel a bit intimidated just being around these seasoned actors.
Where does she teach (if she still does) and how much would these workshops cost?

I get really nervous in groups of people. And the group could be no bigger than 3. I just get really self-conscious. If I took an acting course/lesson and lets say i really suck because of what i explained, will it help or will i just suck and my teacher asks me to leave? lol
Pendrakoto 2 years ago
Well . . . a different approach might be to go WITH your current strength for the time being, instead of against it.
Cultivate your self-consciousness in greater depth . . . with methods like (for example) journaling and taichi.
It might take longer to get comfortable with people in this way . . . but it'll probably be on a more well-grounded and authentic basis.
Good luck (!)

to kursedmoo,
well, if you are a very shy person, do you honestly think youll be able to act during acting lessons? if its only your class or school that terrifies you to act infront of, and you dont mind acting in public, then it will definately boost your confidence. i didnt even want to do orals infront of my class, but the acting lessons i took totally changed me and now im in every school play:) go for it!!
dreamoutloud22 2 years ago
Hi there!
Could you please go check out my ACTING video for Sarah Kane's play "4:48 Psychosis" and tell me honestly what you think PLEASE?
Ans please could you subscribe if you like? :)
LukasDiSparrow84 2 years ago
I know this may seem like a silly question, but recently I've been thinking about Acting, although when I was at school, the thought of having to act infront of class terrified me. If I was to take acting lessons, would this boost my cinfidence? or do you think I'd end up where I was before? ;/
KursedMoo 2 years ago 2
honestly your best bet is watching performances (stage and/or film) with your favorite kind of characters in it. if you can strike some kind of a relationship with them, then the transition to acting will be easier. in other words, watch as many performances as you can before taking an acting class. hope this helps :)

SEMAT56 2 years ago
I wanted to take acting lessons for awhile too, but just like you i was terrified. Then I took a one week introduction class and was absolutely hooked! You never know if you like it untill you try it! To prepare for my first acting class i read a couple books on acting which helped. And yes, it gives you that much more confidence when it comes to public speaking and improves communication skills!
Mopperd 2 years ago 3
my expeirience is that well experience hepls confidence but just being knowing that what you do is good makes it soo much easier to do it with ease in front of crowds. did that help?

go for it. acting is the best thing ever for shy people and you get lots of shy actors.
marielloyd 2 years ago
Uninteresting actors. A waste of effort.
This is just one way of acting: trying to convice yourself and the audiance that you "are" the character.
The best actor is a madman. He knows beyond any doubt that he "is" Jesus Christ.

It never made sense that she had only bad things to say about it during her Charlie Rose interview.
jwalsh67 3 years ago
I am fortunate enough to be studying with one of Uta Hagen's disciples, and he is an excellent teacher, but I would have loved taking the class with Miss Hagen herself. It's too bad none of us have that opportunity any longer.

this is really really cool! I am inspired to film my acting class now and this was the best acting at it's time... but the only of it's kind.. to shed light on this still cutting edge and evolving art form that is impossible to teach and learn but just comes naturally after time and with a Guru type mentor to take you all the way...

How I wish we had acting teachers who really cut to the chase like this, instead of ritually indulging in the vague, messy expensive wankfest which never made any sense. This makes SENSE, I love this. Thanks soo much for posting. Inspiring and very, very affirming.

What I loved about Uta's class is it just made sense. What Whoopi said at the end about wasting her time? Absolutely true. She had no tolerance for it, but if you worked hard weren't full of self-indulgent b.s., she was incredibly generous. RIP, Uta.
