NIce video. this is very informative and very very interesting. I wonder what else archeologist will find when they continue un earthing European sites.
Birka isn't a "medieval viking village". First of all, it was a viking age TOWN. Secondly, the viking age is a time period of its own, pre-dating the medieval times. The viking age in Scandinavia was approxomately between 800-1050 AD, and the medieval times approxomately between 1050-1500 AD. To say "medieval viking village" is as strange as saying "renaissance stone age village".
Though I realize now, that you probably mean "medieval times" from a continental european point of view, where the medieval times are starting before up here in Scandinavia. And who is this "Brassas"? He clearly don't know much of what he is talking about. Hey, Brassas, if you truly want to learn more, you have to stop being biased against Sweden and pre-Norway. All you say are things you don't really know, you just *assume* Norway has this and that and Sweden nothing.
In Viking age Sweden was not a significant country like Norway and Denmark, and if you claim otherwise, I recommend you to read books from the Viking age. The place Birka was covered with Ice 5 month's a year, and it was impossible to sail out from there during wintertime. the whole sweddie coast are/was filled with thick ice all the way down to oxelösund. Whole Norwegian coast is/was icefree, and maked Norwegian Vikings more effective, and could go out on raids non-stop
@brassas - it took a long time before I answer, but anyway =) I am an archaeologist, specialized in the vendel era and the viking age. I have also worked as a guide at Birka. So you must excuse me if I don't have to "read more books", since I've surely read ten times more than you, and also interact with other archaeologists on a daily basis. With that said, none of the countries you speak about existed in the viking age, even if we in some cases can see "seeds" of these countries already then-
@brassas - Furthermore, "significant" for whom? The swedish viking expiditions certainly did have an impact on eastern Europe. The ice was no problem, they didn't sail out just to stay away one single summer, as I am sure you must understand... (you don't exactly reach Baghdad in two months...). They would sail out at spring, stay away for several years, and return on the autumn before the ice covers the coastline. -
@brassas - So: Why this animosity? Your posts show you lack knowledge, and that you post only to throw sh*t on Sweden. Care to enlighten us as to why? If you would like to talk more about the younger iron age in Scandinavia, feel free to contact me through private messaging instead.

Many famous Vikings went easwards as well. 1 in many of them was Harald I Hairfair's son Eirik Bloodaxe. He started to join his fellow Vikings and raided, plundered and burned down villages in Sweden, Finland and deep in Russia. After many successful years there he went westward and became King of Northumbria in England,His life and merits can be read in the anglo-saxian chronicles. Go to York in England and you see some coins they used in his Norwegian colony, with the inscription Eiricus rex

mostly settlements from bronzeage is found in Norway your clown, and they have found clarely connections between Norwegian westcoast and Iberian peninsula ( Portugal and Spain )
Most Swedish runestones is found around Vänern area. Try to look for ships there as well. I think I saw an article in swedish abouth that as well, that biggest chance to find Viking culture items was in Bohus and Värmland area (Old Norwegian area). It's seems like that shipbuilding culture has been different eastern parts of Scandinavian peninsula. Maybe the sweds walked over the ice over to Finland and Russia, and not used ships such as Danes and Norwegians. Maybe the swed boats was small?
Most of the Swedish runestones are found in Uppland around 1300 runestones then second är Södermanland who have over 400 runestones. So the area with the highest consentration of runestones are the area around lake mälaren. I have just explained that we have many ship graves in Sweden and that the Swedes often used smaller ships so they could carry them at some places through the Russian rivers.
Kaupang The old Norwegian Viking market shows that Norwegian Vikings went out in all directions unlike the swedes who went only eastwards. Artifacts shows the fact that Kuapang was part of an international trade network more than 1,100 years ago. Arabian coins found in the settlement suggest that it the townspeople participated in trade through Russia and the Eastern Mediterranean. In addition, pottery found throughout France and Britain. Why is it only found Vikingships in Norway and DK?
brassas: Well infact many vikings from now a days Sweden also went west we have around 30 runestones who tell about the journeys with Danish vikings and took Danegeld from the west. The Swedish viking ships was often smaller so they could cary the shipsat some places through the Russian rivers. And we have fairly many ship graves in Sweden infact you have some also at Birka. Cheers
Ok..so swedish Vikings went to England in Vikingships, that was new to me, but it's nice to learn something new. I will look up this, since it's not mention in any sources. I've not seen any pictures or seen any Vikingships in real life in Sweden like in Norway and Denmark. It's also found a lot of Viking ships in the Norwegian realms in UK and Ireland. This place Birka you mention here, is strange that they not found any ships...since it's a lot of them around the Norwegian and Danish coasts
brassas: The answere to this question is like the arabic sources tell about the rus vikings, when the chieftain died they burned him and the ship and then they made the ship grave. Then I if dont remember wrong I actually think that the archaeologist serach the water area around Birka now a days.
I think Swedes has been searching for Vikingships in Sweden the last 100 years...especially after the Osebergship find in Norway, where a Powerful Viking Queen was burried. The biggest chance to find Vikingships in Sweden will be in the old Norwegian areas I think...Like Värmland, Bohus, or maybe a little south of Gothenburg in the old Danish region of Sweden. Vänern was old Norwegian area..Conquested by Harald Hairfair...maybe try to search there
brassas: Well the problem is that the ships are burned here in Sweden. But instead we have infact the only illustrated vikingship with hoist sail at a runestone here.
Tack BirkaViking!
