  • nice sitar man

  • works like a charm! starting a fire with this and a firesteel almost feels like cheating now ;)

  • i love ur videos. i make charcloth but put it in the wood furnace never thought i could use my MSR pocket rocket but thinki i b wasting fuel. karen

  • Can we now say that cotton saves...:-)

  • COOL! You have a sitar(sp?)

  • thank you soooo much for this vid now I can survive

  • Nicely done! Hardwood charcoal is made in a similar fashion.

  • is it re-useable?

  • I use a Shoe Shining can it works good you really cant find anymore thats not plastic, so that works.

  • so easy thank you!

  • Thanks for the video, I didn't know about char cloth till a buddy mentioned it, I've alway gone down to the local laundromat and asked for some dryer link. I keep that in a zip lock bag. It's free, no prep, light, compressable and instant fire. Just remember, you might get weird looks when you go asking for dryer link.

  • OMG...hi

  • Jute twin is the best. It can be used to tie things down and when you need it you untwist it and it is great tinder

  • Really? A sitar?

  • Cotton balls work way better and way less work.

  • @MrJPort10 They dont stay lit long and they burn quicker!

  • It's so easy even a cave man can do it]

  • LETS GO CAMPING!

  • You missed ONE trick...

It's best to have a touch of water in the tin...

It turns to steam and drives the air out BEFORE ignition temperature.

You don't need much... but getting rid of the air improves the yield.

The smoke you see is your char -- burning -- with the air you didn't drive out!

    Hence dropping your yield.

Your process is known as Carbonizing...

    Bing it!

  • @staydput I was thinking the SAME thing. Good call.

  • I have flint and we couldn't start a fire but this should work thx

  • cheers, very helpful

  • fail at opening the tin ;)

  • This is not a good job it's a cra-------brilliant job :) keep up the good work

  • @jarabis1 lol

  • Nice Sitar!!!

  • very cool video, good job on showing all the details, have you made a fire piston? if you have a video of that would be great..

  • If it gets wet and you dry it out, does it still take a spark like before?

  • using old jeans works well too

  • great vid man! this is where i learned to make char cloth, i made about 70 sheets in one day, over 7 sheets in the tin and it wont work as well. one thing i just tried and it works great is to put a super thin film of vaseline on just a small part of the cloth. still lights great with the firesteel, but you get a small flame as well!

  • Great video man I did this in my spare time today and it worked just fine

  • thanks. i'm teaching scouts how to start a fire without matches tonight.

  • Thanks man, I appreciate this video. Going to be pretty helpful I'm going to start going around my woods not camping out yet, but to get a lay of my surroundings after I find the two metals somewhere near me I'll keep the char cloth handy.

  • great video

  • Thanks for the vid. now i'm gonna try...

  • diggin the sitar

  • if you are covering the pieces then why does it matter as to the color of the shirt?

  • thanks for the video !

  • why not just bring 2x2 pieces of tshirt? cotton burns just fine...

  • nice video, but you can make charcloth over any fire, as long as its hot enough, you should also ( at least i allways do this) close the hole on top when you are done so that in case the cloth has cought fire somehow it gets extinguished and dosnt burn away.

  • nice video, but you can make charcloth over any fire, as long as its hot enough

  • the smoke is very flamable

  • Excellent explanation on how to make char for fire starting. I carry a tin in my BOB for in the rough char making over open flame. Jute rope, sack also makes good char. Something else that most find a nuisance around the home is dust....in concentrated form, that's essentially what you remove from your clothes dryer lint trap. This also makes an excellent fire starting material, along with discarded steel wool from the shop. "OOO" or finer works best and it burns HOT!! Thanks for the Video!!

  • thank you i needed this for my grade 9 C.O.R.E. class now ill be ahead

  • Where on earth did you get a sitar?

  • Great stuff.. thnkz

  • nice, im gonna try this

  • seems like a piece of paper towel with ash rubbed into it would work just as well as char cloth.

  • is the sitar for show are can you play it? also your video are quite helpful

  • Great video, from start to finish

  • excellent video! this answered my last question in regards to lighting fires , i bet this works good with a fire piston also!

  • he said start a fire with out matches or lighter so how is the cloth gonna light!!

  • @MrNismogtr flint and steel?

  • @MrNismogtr fire piston !

  • grills work pretty good for making this

  • dude nice sitar those things are so fun to play !

  • Great video thanks

  • Well done.

  • in ur vid wen u lit the the charcloth it was entertaining to watch the sparks move around

  • can we make char string, char cotton, or char tissue plz answer

  • Instead of a t-shirt you can use dryer lint its a little bit more fragile but works vary vary well and drys faster. Its saved me many of a times from hypothermia while i was duck hunting.

  • Dryer lint works better and you don't have to waste propane making it. It doesn't make since to waste this much energy just to make something later to start a fire. Explain the logic. Just use dryer lint that is a bi-product of another process.

  • @ArtisanTony Thanks for that idea, it worked great!

...I nearly burned down my laundry room though :(

  • can i see a Sitar over there :o nice!

  • your awesome tips help me!

  • This looks like the same process for making wood charcoal. Which, interestingly, means the smoke coming out is flammable syngas (carbon monoxide and hydrogen); another reason not to do it in the house.

  • i'm not american,so i wanted to ask you this: do all americans say "think","that",ect like the man in this video says at 3:12 ? is it wrong not to say it like that ? thanks

  • @pcgamesolution

I'm "the man in the video" and I didn't say "think" or "that" at 3:12. Maybe it was somewhere else in the video?

  • @jasonklass another dumb guys trying to get you made jason

  • @jasonklass I'm English and was brought up to speak English correctly, however I have no idea what this idiot is trying to criticise you about. Even the question "is it wrong not to say it like that ?" seems grammatically incorrect.

  • @pcgamesolution

I am wondering what "up to six in a size like this" translates into in your language. Since that is what he is saying from 3:11 to 3:14.

  • Thanks Jason. This is so easy to do and the materials are readily available. Now comes the practice to make the fire (which is pretty darn fun!).

  • Nice video. Odd juxtaposition with the sitar and the indian dieties in the background.....

    :-)

  • OMG! light the smoke and you have a flame thrower, perfect for lighting up the camp site at night!

  • coool

  • nice vid :)

and what guitar is that becide ur desk?

  • nice vid :)

and what guitar is that becide ur desk?

  • @barsve94

It's on old Canadian-made Seagull. Not the most expensive guitar, but a good one!

  • @jasonklass Seagulls are good guitars.

  • nice vid :)

and what guitar is that becide ur desk?

  • do you not put anything in the tin? like charcoal or anything?

  • @1MuFfiNz1

    Nope, just the t-shirt pieces.

  • do you not put anything in the tin? like charcoal or anything?

  • Have you ever tried petroleum soaked cotton balls? They are quite amazing. though it goes against the buying tinder philosophy if you dont have the materials already

  • @MrVoiceofreason123

Of course. They're great too. I just like to try different firestarters for fun.

  • You don't even need a stove you could just use your grill outside

  • u play the sitar???

  • @JuNiOr64570

Though I could teach myself. Not going to happen.

  • hey jacsonklass can you tell me how much time it took to make the char cloth and about what temperature your burner is?

  • hey jacsonklass can you tell me how much time it took to make the char cloth and about what temperature your burner is?

  • hey jacsonklass can you tell me how much time it took to make the char cloth and about what temperature your burner is?

  • @mantaray134

I didn't time it but it only took a few minutes. I don't know the temp of the burner but I think I had it on medium. The timing and heat aren't critical. Just take it off when the smoke stops and you're good. Hope that helps.

  • 1 does it matter what size the hole is that u punch and 2 does it do any harm of you pack it in or should you leave it loosly packed in it ?

  • @olipitt12

Well you don't want to make the hole too big. The size of an awl or nail is just about right. You don't want to pack it tight or it will crumble so storing it in some kind of hard container is best.

  • Excellent video! Expert advice! You should upload your video to Ewisdomtv

  • Thanks for the info, gonna give this a try tomorrow.

  • Jason,

They are on my channel on the right, or just search on my name.....

    Thx!

  • Nice Modern method. Check out my historical based videos....

  • @tetontodd1

Where are they? I looked on your youtube channel but didn't see them.

  • Nice video, thanks.

  • Well done, thanks for the video.

  • lol you used 3 dollars of fuel to make a 10 cent char cloth

  • hi i was thinking of buying that fire steel too in the uk it costs 8.00 and in usa money that would be about 15.00 is it worth the money? please tell me because u might save me sum money thanks. mechreports1

  • does it need a small hole? because i was going to use a coffee can

  • What a funny way to waste time and gas

  • Great Vid, Keep up the good work !

  • I've tried it and it worked great!

  • Awesome tutorial... SUB'd

  • nice sitar

  • Wow...what a great video. I was thinking of buying a Light My Fire Fire Steel. Now after seeing your video, I'll buy one AND make char cloth...thanks!

  • dude, fire steels are too legit to quit! i love mine, but im going to get a .5 inch thick 5 inch long one, called the bunker, its 17 dollars but good golly.

  • Excellent instructional video Jason. Thank You.

  • what hapens if its not

  • Thank you for posting this info. I will now have to try this.

  • Im converted to this method, excellent, thankyou.

  • can i use a eclipse tin or it would not work

  • I think it would work. I don't think the shape matters.

  • cool thanks

  • What's that music instrument behind you on the left?

  • A Sitar. It's an Indian instrument.

  • Muchas gracias. Muy claro, muy explicativo. Un muy buen video.

  • you are cool

  • cool

  • Comment removed

  • I'm pretty sure I said "cotton"

  • @jasonklass you said any t-shirt 1:55

    =P

great video though, im going to try it out today

  • my bad.

  • you said "make sure to use 100% cotton at 2:12

  • Thnaks.

  • @ilyAndreax3

Make sure it is 100% cotton...2:11

  • Excellent information Jason.

    Thanks a million.

  • what's that thing at the back at the beginning? it looks like a guitar...?

  • A Sitar.

  • Sorry dude, but do you cover the hole after the smoke stops?

  • No, you don't cover the hole.

  • good shit thx for the vid

  • cool

  • Great advice and demonstration. Thank you!

  • wouldnt it be easier to use a lighter or matches to light a fire??

  • Matches and lighters LIGHT a fire. You still need tinder to START a fire. get it?

  • what's the difference?

  • lighter initiates the chemical reaction immediately, but a spark on some char-cloth and oxygen (blowing) will smoke then eventually it will just ignite.

  • sometimes you dont have those, personally i dont like them because it makes you not appreciate the fire. sounds crazy, but itsa good skill to know!

  • Nicely laid out video, good tutorial

  • I've done this on an MSR Dragon Fly at full power, your making woodgas on a basic level. I light the wood gas and when that flame dies out its done.

  • great vid... but instead of a canister stove, what else could you use???

  • You could do it on a fire.

  • do you need a lid?

  • Good question. All the instructions I've seen say you should use a lid but I think I saw Les Stroud or Bear Grylls make it over a fire on just a piece of metal with no lid. Try is and let us know!

  • Oops, Sorry I accidentally removed you last post. Can you post it again?

  • yea sure...i said ill try to make a video response

  • yea...im gonna try to post a video response in a few days

  • Thanks for the info jasonklass. Some people don't appreciate this now, but maybe one day they will. love your vids dude!

  • You can make this char cloth or you can just carry a lighter with you..............

  • good point

  • You still need dry tinder.

  • Bendy Bastard!!!!!!!!

  • ok thank you for your advice

  • ok thank you for your advice

  • normal cotton i dont know what the % was though

  • normal cotton dont know % though

  • Hmmmmm...well you should always use 100% cotton. Mine stuck together a little but as you can see in the video, I was easily able to pull the sheets apart. It is delicate stuff so it can break up if you squeeze it or fold it.

  • hi good vid but when i tried i put three pieces in the tin and waited for the smoke to disappear when i took them out they was all stuck togeather and hard they just broke up in pieces do you have any idea why this is happening thanks

  • What kind of material did you use?

  • ok thank you for your advice

  • to open the lid you can just push the part that says push!!

  • Very helpful, Thanks alot

  • also if your a wood worker old cloged up steel wool works good best if you work with a realy hard wood not worth the $ if your not a wood worker ish person but i mean you would throw it out at that point anyway so wala free fire starter

  • fire steel will also light a cotton ball and dryer lint easy

  • if you take cotton balls and put about 15 of them into a fild canister(thay will fit) and then add lighter fluid or lamp oil i like that "camp fule" ready made colagins camp stoves i just punch a hole in them and just add about a table spoon to the top, leave for a day or two so the fule flows to the botom it will leave a trace of its self on all the coton balls and then you have what will produce a flame like a zipos thats out of controle works evry time

  • when he blows on it, it looks so cool

  • amazing how to video, i enjoyed it and i am going to majke me some char cloth right now!

  • thank you very much for the help

    Ianick

  • lol sitar

  • anyone tried it with cotton wool?

  • Good video. Simple, precise, and complete. Demo validated technique. Brilliant.

  • Good instructional vid. Enjoyed and learned much.

  • badass sitar

  • Very good video, thanks.

  • awesome brother, thanks for sharing

  • nice vid i made some and it was great
