This track tends to be ignored for some reason, but I think it's one of the more stand-out tracks from the game, and even the series in general. It combines a wonderful atmospheric effect with a memorable melody, and really adds a lot to the late-Maridia experience. The other Maridia track is excellent as well, and also for some reason infrequently redone.
@dummeh I see. But when the day comes that they can make good video game movies (Other than Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva), you should get first dibs on composer.
My first time here wasn't long ago (I discovered Super Metroid unfortunately late), but I found Maridia to be... as mysterious as this song makes it out to be. Beautiful song.
Maridia had some pretty peaceful themes. If you want a suggestion, you should check the Sector 4: (AQA) - Underwater Area from Metroid fusion (Or even the other theme for Sector 4: (AQA) Aquatic level control zone). The first is pretty similar to Maridia, pretty calm and underwater themed, while the other is a bit more technological.
The vibe of this cover reminds me strongly of Gundam Wing's music - the composer of which also did the music for Shadow of the Colossus, which I'd love to hear your take on!
Ok, I stumbled upon your YouTube profile today and I've been nothing except impressed with everything that I've listened to. I don't know if you take requests.. Probably not.. but I would LOVE to hear what you can do with the Dark Void theme, or even the Dark Void theme from the first level...
Gorgeous! shows how many good compositions there in old games... so long as someone like Blake is there to orchestrate it properly :) Blake you ever play Wing Commander 3 or 4??
Just out of curiosity... what are the chances of you replacing the Flute with a French Horn? I know it's not keeping in check with the original, but I think there is a chance it could sound pretty awesome(er(est)).
And for the sake of adding constructive criticism: I personally feel it could use a tap or two up on the bass parts. They really hide behind the melodic parts a bit too much (IMO), and with a little more could make the song feel very dark and foreboding.
@SVAFnemesis I like it, but it's no staccato trombone :D Were you implying that from this track? The plucking in this one is a concert harp. I do tend to use pizzicato violins quite a bit in others, though.
This is the absolute opposite of the squareness / stiffness of MIDI. It's really sensitive and realistic (subtle expression / volume change). It's goddamn Perfect!
It reminds me of James Barry's music (Somewhere in Time, James Bond) one of my favorite composers.
You know what would be great to hear from dummeh? The lesser remixed/remade final fantasy songs. I'm thinking Kefka's Tower (FFVI), or maybe Into the Darkness (FFIV). I really hope this happens.
@normantran2011 Thanks, glad you like. I don't actually use reverb all that much - in this piece, it's all the samples with their natural mic settings (I use the stage mics for tonal instruments, far for percussive). Any time I need reverb I just use the build in FL Studio algorithmic one.
Maridia... I can still remember everything about my surroundings when I got through section. It was snowing out, that scent that comes out of the heater and the cracks the house makes when it turns on.
The memories that games can give you. What a day that was.
This... is... gorgeous. My hat is off to you, Dummeh. This is phenomenal. Consider me subscribed.

Hey Dummeh, what reverb do you use? Is it Altiverb? Your songs always sound so airy -- I love it!

You definitely need to do Lower Brinstar. Probably the best song from the game, along with this one.

@Phlakes That and red soil Brinstar. Maybe a bit overused orchestrally, but the quality would make it shine regardless of how many were done already.
