All these vids show one common thing in all motherboards of the 360 with GPU and is that it needs to reheat , is that just for solder to stick back together , i heard that GPU solder craks sometimes and apparently reheating solves the problem, some guys remove GPU and reheat others Towel ,others heatgun ,even there's a guy uses the stove and other uses oven but there are some vids with mods and many looks fine but yours is one different maybe this is it
Nice vid, but I would suggest skipping the aluminum foil part. A silver or diamond based thermal compound will be hindered by adding that step. Diamond transfers 895 W/km, Silver transfers 429 W/km while Aluminum only transfers 237 W/km. Find some copper foil (386W/km) if you insist on using that step.
@GamerGuy51 yes i did i turned it on it had red ring i left it turned it off then turned it on and it worked but my controllers did not work so i turned it off and tried to turn it on again but it went back to the three red ring...
@ZombieGoBoom1 Doing this actually makes it worse. No supposed x-clamp fix, no pennies, and especially not a fucking towel. Only a proper reflow/reball using a BGA welder will fix it.
...does it fix it forever??? will it rrod again?..because right now it plays like a new..the fan turns normal..he sound like new! if i always keep a good air flow near the console..can it last forever without rrod anymore?..or is it 100% sure that once it rrod, it will rrod again ?

@00Kaleidoscope00 Nintendo gets it right because the wii and ds is like the 9th generation of nintendo consoles but the 360 is only the 2nd generation of microsoft consoles

@00Kaleidoscope00 older consoles as such dont haev over heating problems cause they dont render nearly as much graphics ps3 or xbox 360 does. Some nintendo wiis have also been known to stop working cause of heat issues but not nearly as much as xbox and ps. Even then thats cause the wii doesnt have a great gpu and it doesnt give off as much heat. In the end if nintendos graphics were up to mark with xbox and ps3 then who knows, that console would probably have heat issues too.
@zacisyahu well it doesn't matter, most of such things are build to break in a view years, so we buy more. sounds illogical, but it's logical if you think of how much money you can make with such a systems. that's why most phones also break in 2-3 years. so these things could ALL be better build so that they do not break
@zacisyahu then again, that's the price you pay when you try to get ahead of the game. instead of staying on par with whats reliable, tested and inexpensive. Hell, all three companies could have rode out their systems a bit longer and we probably wouldn't have these problems. Yeah the wii isn't as graphically impressive, but its a hell of a lot more reliable.
@00Kaleidoscope00 the only reason the 360 and ps3 fail is because they dont use a socket for the processor and gpu and plus they dont give it enough ventilation so the cpu and gpu just get disconected unlike a pc that uses a socket that the cpu just gets held in by a clamp, i hope sony and microsoft sees these major flaws
A couple of questions..What is the aluminum sheet for? I've been fixing ps3's (reflow) and been getting like half back so wondering if it would help in ps3's. Also when you comment "E74 is fixable just double the shim" Is the "shim" meaning the aluminum sheet? Last question is, what are you doing diffrent in this fix than you were doing before when you were getting a whole bunch of xbox's back?
In the past i could understand why people would look to do these repair techniques themselves (save YOU money), but thesedays, we all know the consoles arent built to last (which makes THEM money), so why bother buy into a product which doesnt last?
I left xbox and all my good friends behind too, but hey, im not going to keep buying these crap consoles just to play games with them, so i bought a PS3 and made new friends, and its much better now. and i dont even have to pay to play my games!
My xbox worked perfectly until I had to update to get on Live 2 months ago. It updated, restarted, then red ringed. Today, My xbox fell over, I plugged it in to try it and the 3 red rings disappeared! I was so excited! Then it said I had to do the update again to log on to Live. It updated, restarted and 3 red rings AGAIN. My warranty expired in February this year, so Microsoft wanted me to pay 100$. >_< I tried calling them back but they won't budge. I tried blaming their update too.
I did the whole shim thing, right screws, thermal paste from Radio Shack and put it back together. It worked for about a minute then the lower right side came on and the screen said error 74. 4 minutes later the two left came on shutting down the fans and output to screen. Bummer. What do I do now???? slfc80525@yahoo.com
@DeviantDigi I get the same thing on (now 3) xbox 360's... i don't believe this works for everyone. Out 3 systems none work... they all do the same thing... i believe there should be a bios reset... if that even exist... we need something that tells the xbox HEY I HAVE FIXED THE PROBLEM restart from factory.
must read this. once u have started there is no turning back. a 85 year old girl was raped and penie slap in 1945. her body was not found until 1947. then a boy last week read this and did not copy and paste this message. the dead girl appeared in his room fucking him and stop until his ass hurt. if you do not copy and paste this onto 10 vidoes in 30 minutes the dead girl will apear in your room tonight and penies slap u until ur gay . well you better start to copy and paste to be saved
I went through like 3 xbox 360s… everytime it was the same thing. the red ring of death. so on my 4th xbox that it happened to, I put my foot down and did tons of research for fixing it... after like 2 weeks i finally found my answer haha.. you wont believe how easy it really is after you get this.. message me for more info
That thing on the back is called a back plate, and it's there for a reason, it provides something for the screws to pull on without flexing the motherboard, which can damage the pcb if you overtighten the screws.
I'm a little confused. When it specifies that you need 16 M5 washers, is it saying you need to have them in addition to the screws/washers/parts that came off the 360? If I do this, should I make a trip to the hardware store to buy some washers, is what I'm asking. Also, what purpose does blocking the airflow serve? In the video, no parts were unsoldered, so why would the heat be needed to resolder anything? Is it to help the thermal paste shape itself to the aluminum better?
@theslyder Hey, you dont uses any of the screw/washer parts that came off the xbox that originally hold the heatsink in place. Instead you just use 8 bolts and 16 washers. Put 2 washers on each bolt. You can buy them at a hardware store. You have to block of the airflow so that the solder under the gpu heats up and melts together again. The reason why your xbox has got the RROD is because the solder under the GPU has split away.
my xbox keeps saying its overheated (two red rings) but it is in fact not hot, so me and my buddy thought that a sensor might be telling the xbox its overheated, and that the sensor is broke. it also does the same thing as as cisco760ca's xbox. any advice???
are u outta your mind? Aluminum sheet? Aluminum is a heat conductor. It will keep the damn heat on your chip all the time instead of dispersing it from the chips. Dude you need an education in Science. Everyone has the magic trick to fix this, Bandaids, the copper penny, the frigging towel etc etc. Now the aluminum trick that makes heat stay on the chip that needs to be cool? Lol the only good thing about this video is the song.
@WeakBrute well I have repaired 5 xbox's myself and although the taking apart part of the video is ok, the aluminum will make it worse. The whole idea of fixing an xbox is to disperse the heat. Thats why people buy modded fans that run 3 times faster than originals, to cool it off. Aluminum and metal will keep the heat onto the chips. Do yourself a favor. If you wanna fix an xbox b4 you put the thermal paste on, buy a heat gun and heat up the chips to melt the solder contacts. Guaranteed 2 work
@WeakBrute i was thinking the aluminum would take the heat, and the paste would keep the heat off the chip, but i guess i was wrong i have repaired 2 360's and i used the penny trick. they worked for about another year
1) If you get 3 red lights then eitherA your harddrive isn't plugged in all the wayB Your Blue or red wire inside your power brick where it plugs into your xbox has disconnectedC Your heatsinks have disconnected from your harddrive due to overheating which is because the thermal paste they use is bad and will not last so go buy a rrod fix kit from ebay they are cheap
The guy who makes this video is a retard, the x clamp was never the problem with the xbox 360 the only reason it is away from the board is so the metal doesn't short out the board, to fix and xbox you need a BGA welder. The BGA welder will decrystallize the crack's in the solder ball's as much as possible. This method will break your xbox really easily, There are many comment's on this video talking about how it broke there console after a short period of time, thumb's up this so people know
too much presure on the cpu and gpu die eventually it will crack:))..best thing to do when u buy an xbox360.....buy a hot air gun also cuz reflow is the only way to get it working for a few months untill its fuck;s up again
@joeman122333 It's thermal paste. The one I'm going to used and the best you can get is Arctic Silver 5. The tube is very small, but it's $10.00 at RadioShack. The reason is because it has 99.99% pure silver in it to conduct the heat. The paste is just used to replace the shitty stuff Microsoft put on when they made the Xbox.
Gamerguy I tried this method and I did everything right but when I turned it on it only shows the middle green light and it does not display anything do you know why?
I don't get it. some other video showed that the four chips that are shown at 4:14 are the main reason of RROD. but you're covering a whole other chip. what'sup with that?
I was wondering what exactly do you need to do this. Ive tried other fixes but when I get to the last stage where my console has to overheat, I can do that because instantly once I turn my xbox on I get the 3 lights. Nothing starts up, not even the fans or the disk drive. What should I do?
This DOES Work for the e74 HDMI 360's GamerGuy!I literally just did 2 in a row. I have been testing them for days, no problem! All you do is let the system heat up after the heatsinks have been reinstalled for about 5 min. Let it cool, let the Thermal Compound get seated properly (about 20 min for cooldown), then restart. BAM! Thanks GamerGuy!

For the peice of aluminum i cut a peice of a soda can and used steel wool to get all the paint off of it. It didn't really cost me anything now my xbox is working flawlessly. THanks GamerGuy!!!
lol... i think you should do this... your learning along the way, not to do somthing like this mean you wont lern how to do it, so when you 360 brakes you wont have to wait for microsoft
I have followed your steps, 2 ?'s if after I reinstall all hardware ,an reboot the 360 if a reflow is needed will the reflow distupt your repair, and what is your take on the penny trick? Thanx for your upload !
E74 on a HDMI console can easily be repaired by reballing (permanent fix) or reflowing the GPU with high quality flux and an SMD Rework Station. Check out my site if you live in Canada: ConsoleRepairGuy
thanks for the video buddy but i got a question . I bought off a friend a broken xbox and i removed the clamps and installed the screws. When i turned it on it worked for a hour or 2. When i started gaming the video chip was going out. So when i pulled out the board i tighten it a little more and i let it heat up a bit. Now when i tried to restart it i get 3 rings and my fan accelerates really high for a few seconds then it stops completly also it doesnt show anything on my tv .
@cisco760ca Under the fan, the gpu overheats. Only way to prevent this is to run a fan straight on that spot. But you must remove the cd-rom somewhere else. If you get three rings of death, you must overheat the board first. Then apply this fan fix.
@cisco760ca - 3 red lights and then fan not coming on , means that u have tightened the screws too much and so the power wont kick the fan in due to some auto bull, basically just loosen the screws
Hate to break it to you dude. I have a bachelors in electronics. Why would you add another thin piece of aluminum under a full aluminum heatsink and think it would do anything. The heatsink itself is aluminum. All ur doing is creating more problems 2 transfer heat correctly. The only thing that could possibly go good out of this technique would be to cut a shim long enough that would touch the CPU & GPU to transfer some of the CPU's Cooling power to the GPU...
wow....this worked....thank you for posting the video....for the aluminum piece I cut out a piece of our cloth dryer's exhaust vent (aluminum) and made sure it was flat!!!...thanks again! seems to be about the same thickness...
i have 3 red lights but i have gpu failure, some of thwe pins have come away from the chip, is the board F****d, or can i repair it. halifaxjack@aol.com.
this fixed mine xenon my friend used the towel trick lol but it worked 1 day next day he was playing for 3 hours and the xbox caught fire xD and burned off :P
I got 1 red ring, and it's giving me the E73 error, do I really have to take everything apart to fix it? And if I do need to take it apart, what specifically am I looking to fix?
do you think its better to do this before it gets rrod becuse mine xbox360 is made in 2006 and i think it gonna get rrod soon soo maby its good to do this noww so it dosent get it at all?? what do you think?
i just got done doing exactly what your video said and we are still getting the RRoD, any suggestions? oh, is the paper there to overheat it to get it to reboot?
I think my Xbox is dead. On the thing thats shaped like a box had red on it. What the fuck do I do >.<

B4MVFan409 1 week ago

It has been ONE YEAR since I did this and my xbox 360 is alive and well.
bgonsalves12 8 months ago
That thing on the back is called a back plate, and it's there for a reason, it provides something for the screws to pull on without flexing the motherboard, which can damage the pcb if you overtighten the screws.

AEKDB46E 8 months ago
I'm a little confused. When it specifies that you need 16 M5 washers, is it saying you need to have them in addition to the screws/washers/parts that came off the 360? If I do this, should I make a trip to the hardware store to buy some washers, is what I'm asking. Also, what purpose does blocking the airflow serve? In the video, no parts were unsoldered, so why would the heat be needed to resolder anything? Is it to help the thermal paste shape itself to the aluminum better?
theslyder 8 months ago
@theslyder Hey, you dont uses any of the screw/washer parts that came off the xbox that originally hold the heatsink in place. Instead you just use 8 bolts and 16 washers. Put 2 washers on each bolt. You can buy them at a hardware store. You have to block of the airflow so that the solder under the gpu heats up and melts together again. The reason why your xbox has got the RROD is because the solder under the GPU has split away.
Hope this helps.

my xbox keeps saying its overheated (two red rings) but it is in fact not hot, so me and my buddy thought that a sensor might be telling the xbox its overheated, and that the sensor is broke. it also does the same thing as as cisco760ca's xbox. any advice???
TheAbeTate 9 months ago
@TheAbeTate your right that it may be the sensor but it also and problably be the fact that gpu or cpu is not connecting correctly to the heatsink

are u outta your mind? Aluminum sheet? Aluminum is a heat conductor. It will keep the damn heat on your chip all the time instead of dispersing it from the chips. Dude you need an education in Science. Everyone has the magic trick to fix this, Bandaids, the copper penny, the frigging towel etc etc. Now the aluminum trick that makes heat stay on the chip that needs to be cool? Lol the only good thing about this video is the song.
Sweezelballin 10 months ago
@Sweezelballin that why he has the paste :l
WeakBrute 9 months ago
@WeakBrute well I have repaired 5 xbox's myself and although the taking apart part of the video is ok, the aluminum will make it worse. The whole idea of fixing an xbox is to disperse the heat. Thats why people buy modded fans that run 3 times faster than originals, to cool it off. Aluminum and metal will keep the heat onto the chips. Do yourself a favor. If you wanna fix an xbox b4 you put the thermal paste on, buy a heat gun and heat up the chips to melt the solder contacts. Guaranteed 2 work
Sweezelballin 9 months ago
@WeakBrute i was thinking the aluminum would take the heat, and the paste would keep the heat off the chip, but i guess i was wrong i have repaired 2 360's and i used the penny trick. they worked for about another year
WeakBrute 9 months ago
1) If you get 3 red lights then eitherA your harddrive isn't plugged in all the wayB Your Blue or red wire inside your power brick where it plugs into your xbox has disconnectedC Your heatsinks have disconnected from your harddrive due to overheating which is because the thermal paste they use is bad and will not last so go buy a rrod fix kit from ebay they are cheap
SE7ENSINSxCOM 10 months ago
so you removed the x clamps and put aluminum under the GPU as an extra conductor element?
cyphi1 10 months ago
So far so good with this fix Gamerguy. Thank you for all of your hard work man!
Much appreciated :)
g0uKi78 10 months ago
The guy who makes this video is a retard, the x clamp was never the problem with the xbox 360 the only reason it is away from the board is so the metal doesn't short out the board, to fix and xbox you need a BGA welder. The BGA welder will decrystallize the crack's in the solder ball's as much as possible. This method will break your xbox really easily, There are many comment's on this video talking about how it broke there console after a short period of time, thumb's up this so people know
Appstorereviewer2 10 months ago 29
@Appstorereviewer2 I 100 % agree but a bga welder is like 400 $ and a xbox slim is like 200 $
Is there a cheep way to reball

i dont get the gooo...wat is that????
joeman122333 10 months ago
@joeman122333 It's thermal paste. The one I'm going to used and the best you can get is Arctic Silver 5. The tube is very small, but it's $10.00 at RadioShack. The reason is because it has 99.99% pure silver in it to conduct the heat. The paste is just used to replace the shitty stuff Microsoft put on when they made the Xbox.
Bl0OdYShAdOw 10 months ago
Gamerguy I tried this method and I did everything right but when I turned it on it only shows the middle green light and it does not display anything do you know why?
DMCorruptionz 10 months ago
I don't get it. some other video showed that the four chips that are shown at 4:14 are the main reason of RROD. but you're covering a whole other chip. what'sup with that?
Fjerid 10 months ago
I was wondering what exactly do you need to do this. Ive tried other fixes but when I get to the last stage where my console has to overheat, I can do that because instantly once I turn my xbox on I get the 3 lights. Nothing starts up, not even the fans or the disk drive. What should I do?
SasquatchLol 10 months ago
@SasquatchLol Maybe the south bridge or a controller on the board isn't getting power. Did you plug everything back in?

This DOES Work for the e74 HDMI 360's GamerGuy!I literally just did 2 in a row. I have been testing them for days, no problem! All you do is let the system heat up after the heatsinks have been reinstalled for about 5 min. Let it cool, let the Thermal Compound get seated properly (about 20 min for cooldown), then restart. BAM! Thanks GamerGuy!

thanks for the video buddy but i got a question . I bought off a friend a broken xbox and i removed the clamps and installed the screws. When i turned it on it worked for a hour or 2. When i started gaming the video chip was going out. So when i pulled out the board i tighten it a little more and i let it heat up a bit. Now when i tried to restart it i get 3 rings and my fan accelerates really high for a few seconds then it stops completly also it doesnt show anything on my tv .
cisco760ca 1 year ago
@cisco760ca Under the fan, the gpu overheats. Only way to prevent this is to run a fan straight on that spot. But you must remove the cd-rom somewhere else. If you get three rings of death, you must overheat the board first. Then apply this fan fix.

Mastermind,
ps. Watch my vids
