He broke the law. He had a duty to appear as ordered by lawful order by a commissioned officer. If he had issues with deploying in a combat capacity he should have declared himself a contentious objector.
Deserted his post in a time of war? Have we declared war? I don't think that's been done since World War 2. I love the responses of we should shoot him and he's a coward, I guess I just find it hilarious that someone believes they can intelligently argue a person that decides they do not want to take part in killing people and would rather pursue nonviolent resolutions. I guess Martin Luther King, Jr, Gandhi and many others were just idiots, cowards... haha!
