It was so self supportive I really think the expense thing was a made up excuse to close it..And with the millions they put into building a new prison today I bet they could restore Alcatraze enough to reopen it..

God it's huge! I thought it was just a speck but in huge and height it looks massive. Can't say I saw that coming.

ya ppl say "why couldnt the inmates just swim to the dock? well, because the rock is ALOT farther away from the bay, and the shore than you think it is, and also, the water's intensely cold and choppy, if you tried to escape, the guards wouldn't even have to go after you, you'd screw yourself over as soon as you left the island.

Nice video clip of Alcatraz. We went to SF July 3-4 this year. We booked tickets to see Alcatraz through the National Park Service, and they allow you to go to the island and tour the facilities. We did the evening tour - the best! Get the tour at sunset and see what it is like after dark!!
