He probably has an overdrive setting on his amp so he can sound cranked up high without actually playing loud or, he might have an overdrive device box which he can use on any amp he plugs into. It also makes you sound fast too.
Really? Cool! I have the same guitar (1998 Fender Mexican-Made Strat Sunburst). But that guitar has better tone than mine. I know it's partly the guitar, but would higher gauge strings or a different amp make any significant difference? (I use a Vox AD30VT).

im not sure - maybe try turning the tone knob down with the gain right up. (and try it with all pickup selections)
