Absolutely BRILLIANT!!! The performance was stellar. The brass, absolutely phenomenal. And the conductor!!!! He literally "breathed" the music. Mussorgsky would revel in this presentation.
Gracias por compartir este video. Yo tengo el disco de vinilo desde el año 1972 por la Filarmónica de Berlín con Karajan, y nunca había oído ninguna que le igualara, pero este director es magistral.
@thepyeman1 But the actual russian myth is called the hut of baba yaga not the hut on hen's legs. I had a Russian teacher and she called it The Hut of Baba Yaga
It did really I was at the isle of wight festival in what 68 or was it 69! Mind goes and they preformed this is was totally amazing! It was the year Hendrix was there - strange days! Thanks for bringing it back
@JFSOCC This song was used in the video game Catherine as the boss theme. That's what the announcer voice says every time a boss appears. You can search Catherine Mussorgsky for the rendition or Catherine Child With Chainsaw for the gameplay video if interested.
Fiery and very very great! I've always loved the Baba Yaga part and the great gate of Kiev is epic and tumultuous. This is a real roller coaster ride.
Well.. nice, but the ending was filled with mistakes, mostly by horns and 2. trumpet to point my finger. Well they know it themselves, they know who they are :)
i've played and heard much more thrilling 'pictures'. the brass could barely sustain the last chord before the final quarter-note, after all of that blowing. and the audience response is tepid, considering that it's one of the most enthusiastic in the world.
I love the playing but good God; how can anyone follow Gergiev? He has to be one of the most unclear conductors I have seen on video. At least he used a baton this time. He typically doesn't and it's even more unclear. Too fast for my taste as well. I just don't care for his style all that much.
The gate of kiev is the gratest and most glorious piece of music ever written by human hand even above others like Tchaikovsky, Bach or Beethoven... no other masterpiece makes it to deliver more greatness, power, grandiosity, etc. than the great gate of kiev. Just so big it makes your chest bigger than before every time you hear it.
HappyWandy457, great conductors have the opportunity to show their musical gifts to handle an orchestra. In this particular case, when the introduction of the "Great Gate of Kiev" comes: THE RITENUTO IS A HARDLY THING TO HANDLE! This great conductor will still learn a lot in future, that is for sure and we will be greatful at that.
Good though it is, it's not in a class with the 1955 recording on Melodiya by Sviatoslav Richter, This one just didn't survive the transcription. The orchestra and conductor were quite good
Yeah, but the music makes a lot of the heat--especially that great reprise of the Promenade at 5:56--the image and the music fuses--bold and bald is beautiful.
This isn't the NHK Orchestra but its big rival, the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra. Wikipedia says: "Valery Gergiev was a guest conductor in November 1996. He conducted the orchestra in Tokyo concerts".
Gergiev is good, but not my personal best choice. The setting of tempo at the coda could be just a little faster ( usual interpretation is a slow, broad stride, in order to bring out sense of scale & pomp ) adding a bit of tension... spice up a little. Listen to Claudio Abbado's conducting of this piece on DG label, the climax is fantastic, it flames up and end in one tremendous awe.
