In fact, Paul was quite wrong. Walmart has ~2500 stores in the US. It has ~146 stores in China. The number of Chinese stores would have to increase 15-20 fold in 5 years for that to occur.

Only private sector is able to create jobs. Goverment can not create jobs as they are funded by the taxes of the private sector. You don't create wealth moving money from one pocket to the other, only by adding value and exporting it. It makes more sense to use our tax dollars to create labor jobs that flows money back to consumers, which drives our economy, instead of giving it to banks so they can payout million dollar bonuses to their executives.

Is he saying that increasingly cheaper goods well catch up with low American wages, so that low wages shouldn't be much of a concern, or is he saying the completely opposite, that as the Chinese economy diversifies and becomes more domestically based, then imported goods won't be cheaper for us, and then low wages is indeed a problem?

Your partially right. However, making changes to promote manufacturing jobs would require large Government control over companies to only produce domestically, instead of using the free global market. We would also have to place extremely large import duties on foreign goods to protect domestic industries, which would spike prices. America doesn't produce anything anymore because we no longer have a comparative advantage to do so. Our specialties come in service sector and degree jobs.

Also as I'm working on my undergrad degree in Environmental Engineering, I can tell you first hand that mechanically speaking green technology (algae diesel, solar, wind, geothermal, and electric cars.) provides much promise and could easily replace coal and oil. Unfortunately, oil and coal companies have the comparative advantage of a century old energy monopoly on top of millions and annual tax payer subsidies, not to mention our foreign policy is devoted to their benefit.

Basically, if green technology were subsidized the same way coal and oil have been for decades (which the recent stimulus package has started) then you will a greater rise in green tech firms successfully competing with oil and coal. Green tech has the advantage of lasting forever, and its cheaper to produce, since it doesn't require massive drilling or mountain removal (if you don't consider the economies of scale of that oil and coal experience). So Anyway, in conclusion...your wrong.
