it says lax not tax. second, Scotland's largest export is oil and gas (quite obvious). most other oil and gas rich countries appear to be doing fairly well don't you think?
Well I guess all the hard work by the Scots Govt is starting to pay off. You should realise that scaremongering and insults will not work in the long-term, internet allows us to talk more freely now, and we can see the benefits of independence and downsides of the union. If you don't 'get it' yet, it's not my problem, but really, try to believe a bit more in Scotland and its people. There is no reason why Scotland can't flourish as an independent country.
@imabagpiper, If Scotland got Independence prior to this recession, would it have been the "key" lmao. Grow a "brain-cell", the ones you lost from watching that video must have dome damage.
@imabagpiper "Prosperous"? Haha. Scotland takes in more than twice the money in aid for social services than it pays in taxes. Meaning, Scotland would have to raise taxes or toss thousands off the dole and massively reduce health and infrastructure spending. Taxes would basically have to double. Scotland would make Ireland look rich.
Most of the friends I have that live in England are keen on Scottish independence, because it would excise a big, money-draining burden from the U.K.
@97kcoats OK I've obviously touched a nerve. I'm quite convinced in the economic arguments for Scottish independence. I can't see how independence would not make Scotland better off financially (and culturally). I admit it, I'm a selfish nationalist who believes his country should jump ship from a sinking union. But as long as Scotland keeps a steady course, I'm sure it will weather any storm in the course of independence. Not one country to leave England's empire has ever returned of free will.
@imabagpiper, Can you tell me how you have an "economic argument"? It cost over 100 billion to bail out Scottish banks, Scotland's GDP only being 87 billion, how could a country with a GDP of 87 billion cost a bailout of over 100 billion? The only reason Scotland is secure right now is because of the Union, we are stronger United. Since when was Scotland part of "England's Empire"? England has not had an Empire since it United with Scotland to form a new country called "Great Britain".
@97kcoats Your argument is flawed:RBS did vast majority of risky business in London(city has lowest corp tax in UK).The UK Gov must bail RBS cos it relies on it and receives all the taxes over the years(along with Oil&Gas revenues and all other financial service taxes). If you think about it,you cannot on the one hand expect all the revenues to be paid to London, then say when it goes wrong say, oh look Scotland couldnt afford to save its banks.Of course not,it never earned the revenues!haha
@imabagpiper, I never said Scotland can't afford to have it's banks, you don't see the point, if Scotland was Independent at the time of this recession then Scotland could not have afforded the bailout package needed, Scotland then would have gone bankrupt leading to a heavily debt ridden society and of course Economy, not to mention the even bigger loss of Jobs. Of course I was not expecting Scotland within UK to bailout RBS alone because as you said Revenue went all over the U.K, duh. Idiot.
@97kcoats "... leading to a heavily debt ridden society and of course Economy, not to mention the even bigger loss of Jobs." Excellent, you've just given an accurate account of what is actually happening to Scotland at the moment IN THE UNION! Plus, you reminded me that the recession was caused by lax financial regulation - a power reserved to Westminkstink! An independent Scotland, being smaller than the UK, would have been mroe afraid of the consequences, and likely to have been more cautious.
@imabagpiper, Unemployment in Scotland has decreased by 8.5% and Scotland's economy grew by 0.5% this quarter, if Scotland was not in the Union our debt per capita would be soaring and unemployment would be at the same level as Ireland's or Iceland's. Actually the whole world banking system was not regulated properly, why? because bankers had the most control and companies to business in more open sectors that are not as easily regulated.
@imabagpiper, And Independent Scotland would have been on a bloom like everyone else before the recession, an Independent Scotland would have been led to believe that regulations where not as needed as much, use your common-sense.
@imabagpiper Wrong. The economic downturn happened all over the world, not just the U.K. Scotland's exports have decreased steadily, and the decrease is picking up speed. The number one export is "food & beverages", taking over from "electronics" before 2004. When the economy is bad all over, "food & beverages" is the first to get hit, and hit hard. Also, the recession was NOT caused by "tax financial regulation" whatever that is. It was cause by banks making billions of bad loans.
@imabagpiper, It's the British Empire, not the English, you complete moron. "A sinking Union", I doubt the Union is "sinking", is that why majority of Scots vote Unionist parties and the SNP are a minority Government within Scotland. The SNP are a failure and on a set course to lose in 2011, you may be selfish, but you sure are delusional.
@97kcoats Is it really the British empire? Britain was the name given to England by the Romans, Caledonia was Scotland's name, hehe, think about it, you've been hood-winked by the unionist spin so much that you've started banging their drum automatically. Also, the Scots Parliament and its semi-PR, AMS voting system were designed to create minority govts, to encourage fairer representation. So unsurprising that SNP is minority Gov. For further enlightenment, see Newsnet Scotland.Ciao bella.
@imabagpiper, Yes I'm sure it was the British Empire and not "English" (Sarcasm), Just because the name given to England and Wales was "Britannia" would not dictate the given for the Act of the Union, the whole Island even before political Union of Scotland and England was referenced as "Britain". Ireland was called "Hibernil" so does that mean Hibernian football in Britain belongs to Ireland alone. Majority of Scots vote Unionist, the votes say we wish to persist united, face it!
@97kcoats Part of the reason many Scots still vote for unionist parties is because the media is dominated by pro-union (especially pro-labour party) spin. Clear as day.
And to quote your own very finely chosen words as posted on this page: use your common sense, you delusional, moron, complete moron and idiot. Check out Newsnet Scotland
Both are nearly bankrupt and down on there knees. Scotland is much securer as part of the Union and that is a fact alone. Ireland's Debt Per Capita is over $500 thousand dollars (One of the highest in Europe), the UK's Debt per Capita is $147 thousand. Ireland and Iceland are both bankrupt Nationals whose dream of being a "Celtic tiger economy" is now dead.
Stop comparing Norway to Scotland our Oil revenue stands at 15-20 billion while Norway triples that!
@sctld, Iceland's Economy contracted by more than more than -5.5% so can you tell me where you got your ridiculous facts from?, Iceland's economy could not have had a +3.3% because in the Last Quarter of 2009 all of there banks where collapsing and they where calling on the IMF for Finical aid.
You said there debt per head was $10 thousand dollars when in fact it is $3,073,000,000 per head.
Iceland Unemployment stands at 8.1% of Population the UK is 7.05%. Iceland is a bankrupt nation, Not us!
rubbish rubbish rubbish from a typical UK unionist. If Scotland had full control of its natural resources then it would be comparable to Norway. Of course overall Norway would be richer because it has kept and invested its oil&gas revenues. Meanwhile, Scotland's revenues are taken to London then some is given back in the form of public services and block grant PLUS wars in Iraq etc. Vote for Scotland in May 2011, Lab+Lib+Con can only serve their London masters and nothing else.
@imabagpiper, How would the UK's oil and gas be comparable to Norway? Norway has more oil and gas than the UK, are you a complete moron? Can you tell me how giving Scotland fiscal control of oil and gas would some how make more of the natural resource? Moron. Independence polls say we don't want the Union to end, voting intentions say we don't want to break the Union, get to reality.
Scottish labour are a joke, they spend all their campaign making up lies about the SNP, by the end of it i thought that labour were some paranoid group of people that thought SNP meant end of the world. The SNP are the only party for scotland and scottish labour, scottish torys and scottish lib dems just serve their HQ in Lonodon and do anything to stop us getting independence, even if that means lieing.
I know that this is only a short clip. However, if it is indicative of the rest of the presentation, I hope that no-one actually paid to hear this man waffle on. like so many of these so-called "consultants", he seems to have about as much charisma as a ten-year-old burnt kipper!
Thank god someone put this on the web - at least that way some people will see it! The cover-up of this news in the "Scottish media" is a disgrace and shows how firmly the papers still stand with the status quo. Obviously Wendy and Gordon have called in favours with every editor they have ever slipped a story to.
Odd that he compares the UK to these other small countries instead of comparing Scotland and her GDP. Having said that, to have the same GDP/Capita as Sweden, even if it is less than that of the UK, would be wonderful and far from the doom and gloom predicted by some Unionists.
Perhaps it's hard to come by GDP/capita figures for Scotland alone for the very reason that it isn't (yet) an independent country and is tied to England & Wales. Norway and even Ireland have a higher GDP/capita than Sweden (and the UK) and I think Scotland could attain a GDP/capita nearer to that of Norway, as both countries have lots of oil.
If you live in Scotland you may not have heard of this interesting story. The foreign owned Scottish media did not cover it at all, nor was it covered by the BBC Scotland or STV news. Shame on them this story has legs and it will kick.
However it was deemed worthy of coverage by English media and thanks to the internet and YouTube the Scots will be able to see what their Unionist beholden media has decided to keep from them.
If you want the full news in Scotland - you need the internet.
