Didnt realize it before, but shes risking her life there, and shes the ONLY one without any "powers" (even pinkie has pinkie sense) Plus, her parents are probably DEEEEEEEAD!
@MrJustinArt i think thats part of why this is such a great show.the characters have realistic personalities and those personalities react to one another.
Poor RD. she just wanted to have sometime being a hero but her "friends" messed that up by making everyone abandon rainbow dash and make her feel depressed and it shire didn't help when they where talking about the mysterious mare do well and saying she was a jealous monster.
@supermagical123l I'm just gonna say this as short as possible. Cocky, smug and arrogant (which radiates from Rainbow Dash in this episode) people are the most annoying kind of people in the world. I, for one, can understand RD's friends perfectly as to why they would teach her a lesson by outright outshining her.
(Not seeking to start any kind of argument. It's just my opinion on the matter.)
@MrJustinArt Agreed. For all of Rainbow's heroics, she really did need to learn a touch of humility here.
Yet, I still don't like this episode. I think it has something to do with the Mare Do Well plotline: it just seems unnecessary to me for the Mane Five to dress up as a superhero to be heroes, when they could have just been heroic as themselves and still taught RD how to be humble. (cont)
@gilbokhan (cont) Personally, I think this could have been a great character conflict, where RD's loyalty it put up against her love for her recognition.
Instead, it's another 'reference' episode, which doesn't surprise me given Williams' previous work. I don't mind references, but the Mare Do Well idea is the first time where it impacted the plotline.
It just seems as though Williams decided very early on 'I'm going to do a Superhero episode. How can I fit the characters around that?'.
@gilbokhan Being outshined by an unknown is much more (depends on the outshined person's ego) infuriating than being outshined by friends. Also, I'm fairly certain that if they didn't dress like a masked superhero Rainbow Dash would have just shrugged their lessons off. So Dash competing with an unknown where she ultimately loses made the lesson far more clear, imo.
@MrJustinArt Hmm... I do agree that it would be more infuriating to be outshined by an unknown, but this is Rainbow Dash. She got *very* competitive with AJ back in Fall Weather Friends.
To me, the MDW identity is intended to be more of an example for RD than something to wear her down so that they can then teach her a lesson, and I think that she would be more receptive of her friend's example than that of an unknown.
@gilbokhan That's pretty much of what there is to the plot. I just wonder if she really can accept the "No matter how good you are, there are always someone better."-saying. Not very likely though.
@supermagical123l Her friends actually save her reputation. Had Mare Do Well not stepped in, RD wouldn't have saved those ponies because she was too busy boasting. That would have tarnished her rep more than a new hero ever would.
I have a feeling that this might be like the situation from Teen Titans with the Red X identity Robin used which was later stolen by an uknown vigilante, that the whole mare do well personal might be used by a unknown pony.
The only part of the episode I liked was the begining because, frankly, I find their little fanclub adorable and the fact that they get into a friendly argument of what to call RD was just too cute. Little kids, whatever species, never fail to charm me. However, I agree that they were out of character and I wish they had found a different way to teach Rainbow Dash like maybe TALKING TO HER PRIVATELY. Also, how did Mare Do Well know to show up to teach RD a lesson in the first place?
@numbuh0051 let's just put it like this, the person who wrote this episode (name's Merriwether Williams i'm sure you have heard of her before) and she is not very much liked in this fandom because she makes generally crappy episodes and overexaggerates. Poor Rainbow Dash unfortunately happened to fal victim to her bad writing.
shes absolutely horrible, and this is the only episode to actually acknowledge this fact. Your problem isnt williams' writing, its the fact that you cant watch RD get whats hers without getting your tits in an uproar.
you know what discord should have done to RD? make her a kind, caring, selfless pony. THAT would be truly chaotic. Its no wonder so many "bronies" like her, its your compensation for liking a show for girls about being good to people.
@MrHateNoob Nope, Pinkie Pie is the best. After her is Fluttershy, then Twilight Sparkle, then Applejack, then Rairity, leaving Rainbow Dash last for being an egotistical cuntweed who can't fucking get over herself.
@supmandude Rainbow Dash is self-confident, not outright arrogant. Merriwether Williams wrote this episode (it was her first) and seems to have a thing about exaggerating Dashie's self-confidence. It's incredibly irritating.
@ArsenalReady She is very self confident, but having loads of ponies tell you you're awesome like that, combined with Rainbow's personality, went to her head. It could happen in real life.
@EpicMegaFail101 I absolutely agree. It could definitely happen in real life and I don't doubt that it has. But Merriwether's second episode was the Hearth's Warming Eve and she portrayed Dashie as blatantly arrogant there as well (with Dashie randomly claiming that she was the star of the play) and I find that to be an outright exaggeration of her character. That's just my opinion of it.
"with Dashie randomly claiming that she was the star of the play"
except that she was one of the stars of the play :/ its not far fetched to think one of the main actors would think themselves the most important part, in fact, that shit happens ALL THE TIME. Her personality type pulls that shit CONSTANTLY,Give that kind of person /A/ leading role, they become /THE/ leading role. Could be playing horatio and convince themselves they are more important than hamlet.
@hcig Constantly? Besides this episode, tell me where else she does. Because she's only ever done this under Merriwether's exaggerated writing. Besides being quite self-confident, where does she act blatantly ARROGANT? There is a massive difference between self-confidence in one's self and one's abilities, and being just plain arrogant. Her self-confidence is actually a trait I envy—I wish I were half as self-confident as her. I've been dealing with my self-esteem issues for years now.
I see why they didn't do the whole "Underdog rhyming" sequence. Copyright issues!
But, at 2:47-3:09, we see an Underdog Movie-esque reference, probably because the EXACT SAME thing was used in the film, if you subtract Rainbow and the carriage and add in a car, Underdog, and a busy crosswalk.
