My point is that Sessions has made explicitly racist statements in the past, even defending the KKK, and he is a US Senator who will be asessing Sotomayor as a member of the Judciary Committee.

Sotomayor was speaking in the context of cases involving racial discrmination, and modified her statement to make it general rather than absolute. That isn't racist at all - it's probably quite accurate.

that is a bad analogy...balls and strikes are clearly defined for an umpire. You can build a robot, or a computer system to call balls and strikes. But a judge must interpret the meaning of laws because they are not clearly defined. It would be like a pitcher pitching and throwing it off the plate but the umpire interpreting the pitch as a strike because the pitcher meant for it to be a strike.
